Altos n o 123. July 2014 news

Introduction from the Captain - Mr. David Pirret June has been a very busy month at the Club, with some very unseasonal weather. The Hillbillies vs. Sandancers event was won convincingly by the Hillbillies, 13/9, but it was a great day for all competitors. This was followed by the Portugal vs. Rest of the World (PA) match, which attracted almost a hundred players however, after the final ball had been sunk, our guests (led by our Director of Golf!) won the trophy (again). Captain s Day was held in super weather and as I stood by the refreshment stand on the 5th Corks, all the players seemed to be having a good time even if not always scoring well. The evening began with the prize giving on the beautifully decorated terrace thanks to all the staff that prepared the decorations and the heartiest of congratulations to Declan Quilligan who was the overall winner. After a very good meal from Jorge and his team the dancing started, and was still going strong until well after midnight. It was a fun evening, showing that PA members really like to party and I believe the last members left at 3a.m. After a week to recover, President s Day arrived, this combined three competitions, and congratulations to Christophe for working out the results! Just to remind us of our President s nationality, we had a little bit of Irish weather mid round, but everyone played through magnificently and the scores were all pretty good. Unsurprisingly, lunch went on for quite some time another great day thanks to David Markey. The diary for July is relatively quiet with only a Social on the 13th to interrupt our rest ahead of Gala Week. Please send in your entry for Gala Week soon. Enjoy your golf. Director of Golf - Monthly Report June felt a little bit like a marathon of golf and social events, and the big winner was the Club as we witnessed some of the best attendances in most of the tournaments. Hillbillies v Sandancers was supported by 18 different sponsors, which have always been very generous over the last 21 years of supporting this event and I would like to thank all the sponsors for making the day such a special one. We had a record 88 players and 94 came for the lunch, which was a very enjoyable afternoon. Pat and Martin Murrish Keith Fletcher Captain of the Hillbillies receives the Trophy from Graeme Thomson Captain of the Sanddacers together with Ross Sutherland and Chris Rindlisbacher Hamish Rumball and Andy Georges Alex and Jan Kirk Janet Leffler, Alan Bentley and Anne Tucker-Brown Wendy Collins, Nick Tucker-Brown and Linda Bentley John Linley and Sally Evans Shirley Griffiths with Pat Heley and her gang Three days later Portuguese day saw another record, 100 players battling it out for the bi-annual trophy; 50 from Portugal and 50 from the rest of the world. At the end of the contest, Portugal was declared the victor. Unfortunately, I was not playing for Portugal and lost my match on the last hole (I did not do it deliberately I swear, I really wanted to beat José Gonçalves). António Nascimento was the captain of the Portuguese team and very proudly received the trophy, before thanking all members and the Pinheiros Altos for their warm reception in the club. page 4

The Lady Captain s Day that followed shortly after also saw a fantastic attendance and big congratulations must go to to Adrienne Buth on her big day, and to Nancy Schofield who took the Lady Captain s Bowl. David Pirret Captain s Day again was a great success, and congratulations to him and his family on providing another extraordinary day at Pinheiros Altos. The meal was one of the best I have attended and every participant enjoyed their golf, especially Declan Quilligan who shot 3 under par gross to win the Captain s prize. The performance on the dance floor shown by many members described what is so special about Pinheiros Altos and its atmosphere. Well Done Captain on a great day! One week later, President s day and Senior Championship was attended by 70 players and followed by another lunch, congratulations to Rie Cherubini who won the President s Prize 2 days after she had won the Lady Past Captain challenge. Also Geoff Stott became the Senior Champion for 2014. Fiona Thomson, Philip Hardie and the President Mai Markey and Jordan Lawless Karl and Angela Markey Away From Pinheiros Altos Pinheiros Altos well represented at the Royal Ascott. While a lot was happening at Pinheiros Altos we also have some news from our members away from PA. Tim Russell won the Loch Lomond Club Championship by shooting 151 over 2 rounds from the back tees. A fantastic 33 on the back nine of the second round allowed Tim for a comeback over Matt Woolf (ex-tour player, now amateur) who was 4 shots ahead of him with 8 holes to play. Congratulation Tim on a great performance! Steve Robbins who trained in Pinheiros Altos over the winter, and was coached by our own Ross Sutherland, has just won the Yorkshire Amateur Strokeplay at Alwoodley by being the only player under par over the 2 rounds. He is now the new course record holder. His handicap has come from +1,8 in March 2014 to +3,1 in July 2014 and his world ranking from 5080 to 2400. Congratulations Steve! page 7

Ladies Section by Adrienne Buth Holland did very well in June. No, I am not talking about football, but about the Cloggies in Pinheiros Altos. Rie Cherubini wrote about them in Alto News nr. 113. They were big news on Lady Captain s Day and I owe them a lot for helping to make the 11th of June 2014 a really big success! Thank you! The Cloggies were led by three captains, a Norwegian: Knut Pedersen, an Englishman: Alan Bentley and a Dutchman: Ronnie Goossens. Their Colonel / upper chief, Michael Van Doorn was on holidays and quite upset when he came home and heard about it. 46 ladies played for the lady Captain s bowl. David Pirret, our captain and David Markey, our President, got up very early and were the starters on the first tees of Pines and Corks. The dress code for golf was orange. The Cloggies were waiting at the end of the 7th of Pines and beginning of 6th of Corks with refreshments, sandwiches and they cleaned the ladies clubs with orange cloths!!! I just can tell that the ladies were impressed and grateful, their game was much better with clean clubs. After a well-deserved and enjoyable picnic buffet we came to the prize giving: there were 14 prizes. Nancy Schofield won the Bowl with 39 points. May Markey (35 pts) and Melody Cotterill (38pts) won the 1st prize for respectively the 1st and 2nd division. Well done ladies! The Cloggies donated the bottles of Champagne for the nearest to the pin, whilst Janet Leffler and Cathy Harper helped me with the prizes and the organization of that day. Thank you all very much. Bernadette Hardie, Diana Collins and Paula Burke Hickey Wendy Collins, Fiona Thomson and Shona Callaghan Susan Russell, Margo Fletcher and Rie Cherubini Saturday the 14th of June was a hot, and again memorable, Captain s Day and to our great surprise it wasn t won by a lady! However, Rie Cherubini did win on the President s Day. We will never know if Portugal (vs the World) won, as most ladies couldn t play because they were getting ready for Lady Captain s day. They were present on the Hillbillies vs the Sanddancers though, when they won many individual nearest to the hole prizes. Past Lady Captain s Day was on Friday the 20th of June. Ten of the 14 ladies were playing. Jeannette Sohier and Molly Wainwright (called the hippies because of their new hips) played only nine holes, and the other 8 played for the trophy: the Silver Jug/ Clairet (?) Rie Cherubini, our latest/newest past Captain won it with 42 points!! Therese van Doorn (35 pts) and Shirley Griffiths (34 pts) won the other prizes. We had a cozy lunch and I appreciated very much the company of ladies I have great respect for. At the beginning of June (Wednesday the 4th, so long ago!), 29 players had signed up for the monthly Medal. An unusually big field! The winners of 2nd and 1st division were Joanna Young, who played a gross of 90, 70 nett and Leigh Anderson, who had 90 gross, 74 nett. That day Melaura Parker had 2 birdies on the 8th of Olives and the 9th of Pines, Susan Russell and Rosie Agnew also scored a birdie on the 8th of Olives. The 18th of June was Qualifying Stableford, and for some ladies it was already the 4th qualifying round in June. Luckily the temperature had dropped and there were some very good scores indeed. Rie and I were winners with respectively 34 and 38 points. On the 16th June we received the ladies of Quinta de Ria for our first friendly home match. The start was a bit hectic, I hadn t realised that Corks would be closed for maintenance, and with help of Rosa we re-wrote the cards for the correct course at the last minute. The result was a draw and Jorge of the restaurant pampered / surprised us with a delicious buffet. On Monday the 30th we went to Clube do Levante for our away match. We had a great time and enjoyed their beautiful and demanding course, Quinta de Cima, and went back home with a loss 2/3. And, after all these serious competitions, a Waltz was most welcome on Wednesday the 25th of June. Finally we could rely on a team and simply enjoy some great Golf and the cooler weather. Leigh Anderson, who had played very well the whole month, surpassed herself and handed in a card of 40 points Stableford with her team Jan Kirk and Pat Murrish, they were winners with a total of 79 points!! Adrienne Buth, Rie Cherubini and Christophe Rindlisbacher Past Lady Captain s page 10

Social Golf by Molly Wainwright Our 3 person Texas Scramble on June 1st proved very popular with the participants. Maybe allowing everyone to play every shot had something to do with that! We did have to have at least five drives each through. Excellent scores as ever and Jorge served a very enjoyable supper all in all a good day! Pines to Corks Course Corks to Olives Course 1st Place Tony Hickey 65.9 David Markey 70.5 Jan De Kesel Joop Carp Ineke Goossens Adrienne Buth 2nd Place David Pirret 66.6 Ron Goossens 71 Diana Collins Linda Bentley Udo Berg Knut Pedersen The next Social Golf event is on 13th July. Everyone is welcome to join us. Interclub by Christian Holst We are approaching the summer break, with just one more away match (completed by the time you read this). We had a very difficult away match against Alto on the 26th, which we lost 4-1, but managed a good 4-1 result at home against Palmares shortly after. Earlier in June we lost 3-2 to Silves International away. We are currently 3rd in our division and are clearly in the running for a good end result. Competition is tight and we have some tough matches awaiting after the summer. Over the summer we will also clarify the selection process for the Interclub team and hopefully make the process more transparent. In the meantime, thanks for all the support and understanding amongst those of you interested. As I mentioned last time, John Waters, Stewart Harper, Tony Hickey and myself played in the Portuguese Senior Team Championship on 7th and 8th June. We finished an honourable third, although we all felt we underperformed. Hopefully we can repeat this next year. Play this shot with a 9-iron or pitching wedge, a grip of about the same firmness you d use to restrain a pet canary, and a chipping-type stroke. Set your weight on your leading foot, the ball in the centre of your stance, and your hands in line with the golf ball, shaft leaning slightly forward at address. Hold the clubface square through-out the short back-and throughswing. Because of the softness of the shot, the tendency is to scoop at the ball or quit on the stroke, so good prime thought is to swing down and through the ball. page 11
