PTO Meets April 17 PTO will be planning their Mother/Son event on Thursday, April 17, at 3:30 in the cafeteria. They will be getting all plans finalized then. Please be there so that you can join in on the planning. Teacher Appreciation Week is the first week in May, and PTO is planning an event. May 8 is the date of the 5th and 6th grades AR trip to Celebration Station. The PTO is providing $15.00 for each student. The classes are having a Schlitterbahn Raffle to raise money to cover the difference in the price of the $15.00 donated by PTO and their Celebration Station ticket cost. PTO has a total balance right now of $13,165.55. The Gene Landers PTO Scholarship application is available from Mrs. Mahan. It should be returned to Mrs. Mahan by May 1, 2014. Page 3

Mardi Fite placed in Poetry this year. I choose two or more poems by two or more poets from a decade/ social movement. In the second category poem has to come from poetryfoundation.org. I like doing poetry because it s interesting. I look at this competition as helping me to speak better in public. Mardi says there is also just a pure fun said to UIL. I get off school for a day, and I can meet new people. I would someday like to be an occupational terapy assistant. OTA s help people re-learn the basics, like writing. Casey Gore placed in both LD Debate and Informative Speaking. Casey said, Both of my events are mainly speaking events because I love to speak. I m a talker, and it helps with all my communication skills. It is fun to me to compete for a prize! I plan on International Marketing being my college major. Kaci Powers placed in chemistry. She says, It s fun and challenging. It will help me to further my education. It s fun in UIL to hang out with friends and get to travel places. I plan to be a teacher and a coach. Tyler Raine placed in editorial writing. He explained, Editorial writing is where you are presented with a problem and must pick a solution with supporting evidence. Then you present it in newspaper format. I think my experience in editorial writing will help me assess problems in the future, along with my writing skills. I enjoy in UIL getting to meet new people and eating. Tyler wants to go into the field of finance. Raney Cortez says, I do editorial writing. This writing event helps me become a better writer, think more clearly, and think faster. It s fun because I get to be competitive, spend time with my friends, and beat my boyfriend at editorial writing. I plan on doing Physical Therapy in the future. Sarah Williams placed in Prose. I prepared two stories and read them orally to a judge. I enjoy being creative and reading aloud to people. This event helps me to read a story colorfully and be better able to speak publicly. It s fun in UIL to compete and win mainly winning! I plan to major in Early Childhood Education at TAMU-C. Hudson Northcutt placed in LD Debate and Informative Speaking. He said, In LD debate you receive a topic and argue over whether it s right or wrong. Affirmative or negative. You cannot be biased. In informative speaking, you receive a current news topic, and you must inform the judges with a current report. Public speaking is a plus when you become a teacher. Hudson plans to go to A&M Commerce, then transfer to A&M in College Station. I will aim to receive a bachelor s degree in science, then work for the Air Force flying UAVs (drones). After doing that, I ll go back to school and get a master s, then teach high school science. It is fun in UIL to get to meet new people and compete doing things I love. Halie Waid placed in feature writing. She says, Feature writing is an emotion-based news story. I enjoy writing feature stories because it is a fun and creative way to extend my love of writing. I one day hope to work for a newspaper, writing feature stories, and this event has given me more experience for that career. UIL is a way to express your intellectual talent in a fun, competitive way. I love spending time with my friends at UIL meets! My top career goal is to be a lawyer, but my love for writing prevents me from not working for a newspaper at some point in my life. I was newspaper editor and feature writer for my school newspaper at my old school for two years. Writing definitely stole my heart. Kendra Jock placed in news writing. She says that news writing is straight to the point and informational. Kendra says, UIL is fun because we learn new things and make memories with friends. Kendra plans to pursue a career in either kinesiology or journalism. Ms. Leah Gore, UIL Director says, I m so proud of all of the students, but looking at the seniors that I have seen grow through UIL over the years, I see how these events have helped prepare them for success in their future lives. They have learned through UIL, academics, and speaking events; they have gained selfconfidence, responsibility, and the value of competing with others head to head. Page 8

TÇzxÄ ZÉãÇ cüé}xvà Janiece Joslin tells of the following project: Volunteers take donated wedding dresses and make infant gowns for the babies who do not get to go home. It was on the WFAA news recently and Jan Williams and Eva DeHart feel the need to do this. There is really nothing out there for the babies to be buried in. These gowns are free of charge to the families. The hospital is very happy that someone is doing this. Anyone who would like to donate their wedding dress to this cause needs to contact Jan or Eva. Anyone who can cut out from a pattern, press, glue, donate a dress or sew is more than welcome to help. We will be having an Angel Gown Workday very soon. They do have two wedding dresses already donated. So if any of the students here whose mom would like to donate their wedding dress, that would be wonderful. Phone Eva at 903-945-2254. A young girl in our community has found herself in a tough spot. Little Danni Massey just turned 5 years old and is in kidney failure. She was sent to the ER in Children s of Dallas. She had surgery so the doctors were able to prepare her body for dialysis. We are starting a series of fundraisers to help her and her family out through this difficult time. Volume 16, Issue 22 The FCCLA Chapter is selling raffle tickets for a Texas flag-themed quilt. The quilt was donated by honorary member Janiece Joslin. The border of the quilt includes every town in Texas that has a quilt shop on the Quilters Tour. Raffle tickets are $1.00 each, or six for $5.00. The ticket drawing will be on May 8, at the FCCLA Banquet. See an FCCLA member to purchase tickets. By Halie Waid Page 22 FCCLA Chapter Touched by Community s Support The FCCLA held a donation-only chicken spaghetti dinner on Sunday, March 30. The chapter was raising money for their state competition in Corpus Christi. At the dinner, the chapter made a total profit of $1,019. It was a great success, Chapter Advisor Janie Vandiver said. We appreciate the community s support and their generous donations. All proceeds will be used to attend competitive events. The contributions from the community have definitely helped make our trip possible, senior Casey Gore said. We are so thankful to have our community s support. The spaghetti dinner was not just a benefit for the chapter but a way FCCLA could bring our community together. The people in our community not only come for a great meal, honorary member Janiece Joslin said, but for a great opportunity to socialize with others. The FCCLA Chapter would like to thank everyone who helped make the dinner possible. They send a special thanks to Chicken Express, Brookshire s Co., and Delta Supermarket for their generous donations. They would also like to thank the parents that helped prepare and serve the meal. The FCCLA members are very touched by the community s support. Twelve students attended the state competition, including Casey Gore, Sarah Williams, Katelyn Allen, Katelyn McDonald, Skylar Evans, Yesenia Castillo, Kadee Anderson, Angie Alvarez, Judy Brown, Kendra Jock, Halie Waid, and Sydney Evans.
Gore Continues to National Competition in FCCLA Vandiver Commends Members for Success Twelve local FCCLA members joined nearly 4,000 other members from across Texas to participate in the FCCLA State Leadership meeting at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, April 10-12. The theme of the meeting was FCCLA -A World of Opportunities. The meeting agenda included state competition in STAR Events, general sessions, workshops and the house of delegates. The meeting was led by the state officers along with the assistance of region officers. L-R Brown, Jock, Waid, McDonald, Gore, Williams, Castillo, Evans, Mrs. Vandiver, Bryant, Allen, Evans, Anderson, Alvarez. Casey Gore, 1st place state qualifier in STAR event competition for Region III, placed first out of 28 entries in the competition of Fashion Construction and became the national qualifier for Texas. Casey will compete at the national meeting July 6-10, at San Antonio. Sarah Williams, 1st place state qualifier for Region III, competed with 28 other entries in the Recycle and Redesign category, and placed 3rd. Other competition included testing in specific areas of study. Those testing in Creed, Mission, Purposes included Yesenia Castillo, Katelyn McDonald, and Katelyn Allen, in Etiquette included Skylar Evans, Kendra Jock, and Kadee Anerson, in Job Interview included Angie Alvarez, Sydney Evans, and Judy Brown, and in Parliamentary Procedure was Halie Waid. The members placed gold, silver, or bronze. Those results will be received this week. During the first general session Thursday night, Casey Gore spoke to the large delegation about his trip to Japan through the FCCLA Japanese Exchange scholarship program. He gave highlights of the six week stay with a host family, as well as encouraging members to apply for the opportunity. On Friday, the members enjoyed touring the Texas State Aquarium. A sincere thanks goes to Mrs. Joslin, Mrs. McDonald, and Mrs. Gore for their help and support along the way and during the meeting. A tremendous amount of effort and hard work has been shown by these members, and they are all winners. Sarah Williams Dinner Theater Raises Money to Support Theater Department By Halie Waid The Attempted Murder of Peggy Sweetwater was publically performed by the Sulphur Bluff High School s theater department on Saturday, April 5, in the New Gym. It was a donation only spaghetti dinner theater. All proceeds were used to benefit the theater department. The fundraisers we do help make our play possible, play member Sarah Williams said. We wouldn t have made it this far without the help of our community. The Attempted Murder of Peggy Sweetwater is a comedy set on a South American Banana Plantation. The play involves three adults trying to solve an attempted murder mystery. The play Zeringue, Bryant, Vance, Raine was hilarious, teacher Kelly Johnston said. The ending shocked me! Jock The cast included Casey Gore as Edward Llewellyn, Tyler Raine as Sir Phillip Dowden, Meagan Coberley as Percy Saunders, Erin Zeringue as Files the Butler, Jock, Raine, Gore, Coberley Sarah Williams as Petty Sweetwater, Halie Waid as Sean Side- Step O Doodle, Cody Vance as Bill Baxter, Cheyenne Bryant as Myrtle Baxter, Landon Dorner as Morely, and Kendra Jock as the Duchess of Lardham. Other people who make the play possible include Katelyn McDonald as Stage Manager, Raine Cortez as Sound Technician, Lexi Earley as Light Technician, Shelby Williams as Hair and Makeup Specialist, and the Director, Robin Wheat. The theater department would like to send a special thanks to Gina Raine for preparing the dinner for us. I am especially grateful to Gina Raine for selflessly volunteering to do all of our cooking, director Robin Wheat said. I m blown away by the community s generosity.
