T E R M 3 W E E K 7 Message from the Principal: What a weekend that was! Thank you so much to all the people that came in to support our art show over the weekend. The hall was absolutely packed on the opening evening, so much so that we re going to have to limit the number of opening night tickets next year. Sales were excellent as well and are very much appreciated with the profits going towards the upgrade of our music and drama room. Another special thank you has to go to our major sponsors, Wakefield Hospital and Gazley, as well as our many other sponsors. A final special thanks to Virginia Woods-Jack, Veronica Hall, Catherine Buyck, Caroline Campbell and Carrie Carey who were absolute stars in putting the show together. They dedicated a huge amount of time and effort towards it. Saying that it wouldn t have been possible without you seems like such a cliché, but it couldn t be more appropriate in this instance, because it really wouldn t have been. Just under two weeks to go until Market Day. On Thursday 20th the bottom court, hall and the downstairs classrooms will be filled with food and gift stalls. SWIS Francs will be on pre-sale in the next week or so and on the 20th I recommend getting in early before your favourite food sells out. Francs are the official SWIS currency which is purchased so that students aren t handling cash. The day runs from 3:30-6pm and will go ahead rain or shine. We look forward to seeing you there! Congratulations! Congratulations to Hein Jooste for his amazing achievements in Competitive Cheerleading this year! Hein is in the Senior level 2 cheerleading team from Bigair Owhiro Bay who have come away from their first competition of the year with 1st place in their division, Level 2 Grand Champions and Overall Competition Winners! We would like to wish them best of luck as they now journey to the Gold Coast to compete at the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation Queensland State Championships on the 16th of September. Lost Property We have a big pile of clothes and lunchboxes building up in the office foyer. Please come and have a look to see if anything is yours. Please also make sure ALL clothing is named, as named clothing tends to get back to its owner, unnamed clothes tend to not! Pick up and Drop off around SWIS Please remember that if you enter the school parking area by the main office for whatever reason then you MUST enter from Waripori Street and exit onto Rintoul Street. This is to avoid traffic jams. This is a kiss and go area only. Please do not park for any length of time in this area. In regards to dropping off your children on Rintoul Street, please do not park on the yellow lines by the pedestrian crossing or in front of driveways. We are aware that there isn t much space in this area but student safety is paramount. Thank you for your support with this. COME AND CHECK THEM OUT! Come and share your feedback on the initial concept designs for the three buildings (Newtown Community Centre, Network Newtown & Newtown Hall). In response to your feedback at Workshop 1 (and previous Our Town Newtown data), the Architects have made some concept design models that you can interact with and help to develop. Visual Art semi-spec Visual Art tech group have been demonstrating their understanding of value using a variety of tint and shade of a base colour. Beautiful A3 sized acrylic silhouette paintings were the result! Public buses We are aware that there have been some issues with buses with them either not turning up, not going on the correct routes meaning that students get dropped off well away from where they should and being too full to board. A reminder that we don t have any official say over the busses despite some having SWIS on them. Students are also entitled to board any bus although the 774 and 654 have been put on specifically to support SWIS and other students (again, these are not SWIS buses, just buses that go past SWIS. Anyone can board them). Kilbirnie Tennis Club 2018 Tennis Central Club of the Year. Donovan Bixley event at The Children's Bookshop Popular author and illustrator Donovan Bixley will be entertaining children at a free event at The Children s Bookshop in Kilbirnie Plaza on Saturday, September 8th from 2pm until 3pm. Donovan, who has published more than 100 books, including the Flying Furball, Dinosaur Rescue and Dragon Knight series, is a household name for anyone with young children due to his distinctive style and engaging sense of fun. His Wellington visit is a celebration of his latest title - How Māui Fished Up the North Island - which reinvents the legend of Māui as a cheeky younger brother on a fishing trip with the whanau. Donovan worked under the guidance of Dr Darryn Joseph to honour the cultural significance and importance of Māui and the book is available in both English and te reo Māori editions. Donovan will be reading, drawing and signing copies of his books at this event.
