Cajun Chronicles Terrebonne November /December 2015 Great Job Terrebonne 4-H members! You are igniting change each month as you participate in the planned community service projects. We collected over 100 boxes to donate to the Operation Christmas Child project! Way to go! Upcoming Service Projects For the month of November, Terrebonne 4-H will be participating in The Kiwanis Club Annual Coats for Kids program. Please check your closets and bring any unwanted coats, sweaters, sweatshirts, or jackets, and blankets for donation to the Coats for Kids drive. All items will be distributed to local area needy children and families. Please bring your donation to the 4-H office by November 20, 2015. For the month of December, we ask that you participate in Toys for Tots drive. The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. Terrebonne 4-H will collect new unwrapped toys throughout November and December. We will also have a drop off location at our December 5 cookery. We will accept toys until December 8, 2015 at the 4-H office (511 Roussell Street, Houma). Christmas Ornament Contest Let s Decorate a tree or two or three.for a local nursing home. We are asking Terrebonne Parish 4-H Members to be creative and enter the Christmas Ornament Contest. Rules: 1. Must be handmade by the 4-H member no store bought ornaments. 2. Must have the 4-H Clover on the ornament. 3. Ornament must not be larger than 6X6. It can be what ever shape you like. 4. Your name, school name and grade should be attached to the ornament with a gift tag. 5. No edible items or real flowers. 6. Ribbons will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in elementary, middle, and high school divisions. 7. Ornaments are due to the 4-H Office (511 Roussell Street) by November 20, 2015, no later than 4:00 p.m. 8. One entry per 4-H member. 9. Ornaments will not be returned, they will be donated to a local nursing home.

Page 2 CAJUN CHRONICLES Beef, Sugar, and Sweet Potato Cookery Saturday, December 5, 2015 Bourg Elementary 4413 St. Andrew St Bourg, LA Registration: In Cafeteria 9:00 9:30 a.m. Judging and Workshops: 9:30-11:30 a.m. Cookery Awards: 11:30 a.m. Ground Beef Cookery 2. Three Categories: All dishes must be chilled prior to arrival, and arrive at registration in an ice chest with ice/ice packs. Your dish will be disqualified if it is not completely cold. NO EXCEP- TIONS! Microwaves will be available for judges to heat samples before tasting dishes. *A sample of 4-6 servings (in one dish) is requested for judging. Place name and school name under the dish/container You must provide a copy of the recipe, (recipe should have the 4-H ers name and school name on the back). The recipe should include the name of the dish, list of ingredients, how much of the commodity it contains and clear preparation instructions. Previous year grand champion dishes may not receive 2015-2016 Grand Champion awards. 4-Her s will not be allowed to win grand champion in more than one category. All dishes receive ribbon awards. Grand Champion dishes selected in each category will receive awards. 1 point will be given to each member for entering the cookery regardless of the number of dishes entered. 4-H members will also be given a point for participating in the educational workshops. 1. At least 1 pound of ground beef must be used in the preparation of the recipe. All ground beef should be cooked until gray in color, not pink and juices run clear. Low Calorie Main Dish A dish that provides less than 300 calories per serving. Calories per serving should be stated on the recipe. Quick and Easy Main Dish A dish that is prepared and served in less than 1 hour. One Dish Meal A dish that provides ingredients from at least 3 of the 5 main food groups. Guidelines: Sugar Cookery Five Categories: Cakes, Cookies, Candy, Pies, and Any other Sugar Dish Cloverbuds receive participation ribbons. 1. Any 4-H member may enter up to one dish in each category. 2. The prepared dish should have at least ½ cup of sugar. *Types of sugar which may be used include: white, brown, or powdered. Splenda is not considered sugar for this contest. Sweet Potato Cookery Two Categories: Dessert and Other Sweet Potato Dishes Guidelines: 1. Any 4-H member may enter up to one dish in each category. 2. The sweet potato dish must contain a minimum of 1 cup fresh, frozen, or canned sweet potatoes.

TERREBONNE NOVEMBER /DECEMBER 2015 Page 3 National 4-H Week Review : in We were so PROUD of all the green, white and 4-H clovers we saw during 4-H Week! Thanks to all schools who promoted 4-H! We saw many different activities taking place around the parish. 4-H Week Display Results: This has been the biggest participation in the display contest in several years. All 4-H clubs who participated worked well to show the parish their 4-H Pride AWESOME job to all clubs who participated! The winner are as follows: 1st Lacache Middle School 2nd Bourg Elementary 3rd Montegut Middle Honorable Mention : St. Gregory Thanks to the following schools for participating in the National 4-H Week Display Contest: Maria Immacolata, Grand Caillou Elementary, St. Matthew s, St. Francis, H.L. Facebook/Instagram Contest Thanks to all who promoted 4-H on Facebook and Instagram. Many more pictures were shared this year to promote 4-H! The results from our Instagram Contest : The winner of the $25 gift card is: Peyton Pellegrin from Bourg Elementary One Day 4-H 4-H members throughout Terrebonne Parish did an outstanding job participating in community service projects and promoting 4-H along the way. We saw 4-H members recycle, donate goodies to the faculty and sheriff's office, and clean flowerbeds and road sides just to name a few activities. The winning club of One Day 4-H is: St. Francis 4-H!

The pumpkins were judged and then donated to the Haven and the Oaks of Houma Nursing Home. Page 5 Terrebonne 4-H Livestock Join Us for the Terrebonne Parish 4-H Junior Livestock Show and Rabbit Show Houma Airbase Pavilion Friday, January 22, 2016 Rabbit Show 5:00 pm Saturday, January 23, 2016 Cattle, Sheep, Goat, Pig, and Poultry Show 9:00 a.m. Terrebonne Parish 4-H will hold a Parish Rabbit Show on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. in conjunction with the Terrebonne Parish Jr. Livestock Show. It will take place at the Air Base Arena Building on the East Side of Houma. 4-H members interested in participating in the Parish Rabbit Show should contact Mr. Reed at the 4-H office (985-873-6495) by December 1, 2015 for registration information. 4-H Top Chef s Clover Thanks to Caldwell Middle School for hosting the Seafood and Rice Cookery! Thanks to all participants for making this event a success! While the judges were judging dishes, 4-H members were able to attend fun educational workshops, presented by our Junior Leader members. Thanks to Gabie Davis, Jayson Ray, L erin Prestenback, and adult volunteer Tina Use for their leadership with these workshops.
