For Immediate Release 2010HSD0071-000950 Aug. 14, 2010 N E W S R E L E A S E Ministry of Housing and Social Development GRANTS SUPPORT YOUTH AND DISABLED SPORTS ON LOWER MAINLAND VICTORIA More than 225 local organizations in 27 communities in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia will benefit from $5.9 million in community gaming grants for sports programs for youth and people with a disability, announced Rich Coleman, Minister of Housing and Social Development. The Province wants to encourage active lifestyles and help our youth foster their talents through sports, Coleman said. Through these grants we are supporting local organizations that contribute to healthier communities across B.C. This round of funding provides 457 groups in the province with approximately $9.2 million in community gaming grants to support sports initiatives for youth and disabled people across B.C. Sports organizations with multi-year commitments received their funds in June 2010. In total, the Province has budgeted $120 million for gaming grants in 2010-2011, $7.4 million higher than last year. The grants will fund approximately 6,000 organizations that support people in need, public safety, youth arts and sports, education and parent and district advisory councils. To date, approximately $29 million has been allocated to gaming grants for 2010-11. The Province considers applications for community gaming grants four times per year, with each intake devoted to a specific sector. The list of community gaming grant recipients can be found here: www.hsd.gov.bc.ca/gaming/reports/docs/grants-cgg-sport-2010-11.pdf For more information about community gaming grants, please visit: http://www.hsd.gov.bc.ca/gaming/ -30- A backgrounder follows.
