CELEBRATING 23 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Seattle Chapter - American Singles Golf Association July 2015 President s Message Hi Golfers, I'm getting this in the mail a little early due to my departure for vacation. If I miss some big news please forgive me. June saw some great golf and great weather. We had informal events at Bellevue and the Nile. Bellevue had our biggest turn out of the year and what a treat to run into former members Wayne and Evie Mulholland at the Nile. Just another great example of what can happen when you meet up in the ASGA. We had a very successful informal event at Gleneagle in Arlington. I am really pleased to see so many signed up for our Eastern Washington event. Great going. Almost one event per week. We had members who attended the big Sacramento event in gold country which I am told was great. We also had members who both volunteered and attended the US Open at Chambers Bay. I can't wait to hear the reviews on that. It made for great TV. We have lots coming up in July. I just want to note that while some formal events may be closed to only ASGA members in good standing, all of our casual and informal events are open to guests who would normally be eligible to join the club. This is one of the best ways to introduce ourselves to potential new members so please do invite your friends, family and acquaintances to join us for one of our upcoming rounds. See you all in July, ~Ben Lynnwood Outing Results On Saturday May 30 th the ASGA golfers graced the Lynnwood Golf Course with their presence. Needless to say the gallery was excited and in awe of watching the best golfers in the Seattle ASGA attack this difficult and challenging course. These ASGA golfers had traveled from all parts of King County and even outside of King County to make the perilous journey to Lynnwood. The event organizer, Florence Solt, spared no expense in getting the course ready for such a prestigious event, including providing cookies. I must say that the course was full of hazards, sand traps, water, trees, and worst of all bumpy greens. Several golfers complained bitterly about the bumpy conditions of the greens, as they missed putt after putt. Some even stated openly to the media that the greens were not up to ASGA standards. But be that as it may, there was no putting competitions anyway, so stop your whining! Another complaint was that the crowds did not have access to all the holes on the course, and therefore could not follow their favorite golfers around the course. This may have been a legitimate complaint, except that there were no crowds. Alas, not one single person watched these talented and gifted golfers. But enough about the course, let s move on to the results of the competitions. Hole number 2 was a KP for men. It was a little over a measly 180 yards, yet not one single man got on the green. I mean really. What a bunch of wimps! Hole number 4 was a KP for both men and women. Bob Strom came in first place just 7 feet and 10 inches from the cup. Second place went to Tab Bronson, who barely missed the pin by 39 feet. Third place went to Pat Bonner, who couldn t get inside Tab s shot and was 41 feet away. Finally, fourth place went to Katie Jusenius, who was so far away, she had to hire a guide to find the cup. Hole number 12 was a KP for women. First place went to Sandy L Allier, who just missed the hole by 4 feet. Second place went to Virginia DeVos, who was a respectable 15 feet from the pin. Upcoming Events Include see SinglesGolf.com/events Denver's Rocky Mountain High Weekend - August 13-17, 2015. Carole Leslie and Kenny Hicks ended up in a tie for first place with an outstanding net score of 59. There is no truth to the rumor that they checked each other s score card. Cheryl Howlett, Sandy L Allier, and Virginia DeVos all tied for second, proving that two s company and three s a conspiracy. After golf we headed to a restaurant, where all the losers again blamed the course for not winning. ~John Sweeney Sacramento Chapter Event, June 5-7, 2015 Angel s Camp, CA was the base for the Calaveras County event. Yes, the home of the renowned Jumping Frog contest. In attendance from Seattle were Lynn Johnson, Karen Kohler, Tab Bronson, Kenny Hicks and Sandy L Allier. Also in attendance was Chuck Curran, former Seattle Chapter member who now lives in Lafayette, CA. Bill Neal, whom many of you know from Tucson, was there as were several members from Palm Springs, Larry from Arkansas, Ruth from North Carolina and a number of Bay Area members. Some of us checked in on Thursday evening and enjoyed a back porch BBQ at the Wyndham suite of John Wardlow, Warren Pecor and Dwight Pattison event sponsor. We had New York steaks and more pot luck items and beverages than we could finish. Everybody hauled out left- overs including beer and wine. After our Friday event, there was still enough wine to provide at least 2 bottles per table for our Saturday dinner and dance. Friday we played golf at Saddle Creek, followed by a BBQ at the club house consisting of chicken, hamburgers, potato salad and lots of garnishes. Saturday we played at Greenhorn Creek and enjoyed a fantastic banquet at the resort along with dancing to music from the 50 s and 60 s. Sunday s event was La Contenta, a very unique course that reminded me a lot of Buffalo Hills in Montana with its steep up and down greens and blind tee boxes. All three courses were highly rated and met our expectations. As for the players and our scores, a few of us are talking about things other than golf! Almost everything in the area relates to Jumping Frogs, even the street and business names. There are Mark Twain memorials everywhere since he wrote the famous story in 1865, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. Just try to get a room anywhere in Gold Country near Memorial Day when the jumping frog contest is held. Mark Twain Samuel Clemmons came out west in 1849 during the Gold Rush. He worked a short time for a newspaper in San Francisco but was urged to leave town by the local law enforcement folks. That is when he arrived at Angel s Camp and Gold Country. Karen and I visited the Calaveras County Museum and saw the old court- ASGA 2015 Alumni Golf Event September 13 th 2015 at 1:00pm Mark your calendars and please forward to Stu or myself, any former ASGA members emails. ASGA we be playing at Auburn Golf Course Sept. 13 th at 100pm All former members are welcome and encouraged to come. They will need to send their checks to Carletta Barnes. 1539 Goat Trail Loop Rd. Not required of course, as for some, Auburn is very walkable. However makes it easier for the pairings to know in advance. Thanks and hope to see everyone there. Sandy and Stu

house and local jail which was home to infamous resident Black Bart whose name graces the restaurant and inn across the street. If you get a chance to attend a Sacramento event, you are sure to have a good time. ~Lynn Johnson Snohomish Sixteen people came to play the casual outing at Snohomish on June 27 th. The weather was beautiful with a nice breeze and a good time was had by all. Afterwards, we all gathered at the Buzz Inn for dinner. Thanks to everyone for joining me on short notice. ~Adrienne A Day in the Life of Golf Lessons The Fear of Chipping The video in your head plays the nightmare over and over... a screaming chip shot over the green, in the water, then the dreaded 3-putt. And you haven t even arrived on the first tee! Stop the madness! Here is a good, very easy tip for chips around the apron of the green. Take six practice swings as slowly as you possibly can. Take the club head back only about four feet and move the club head about four feet past impact. Then hit a ball in slow motion. You may not even think you could hit it. Practice. It should take about 6 shots to get better contact and control. Fear of the unknown diminishes if you know what to expect. You might be surprised at the results. Replace the nightmare with an adventure. It s more fun. ~Chris Aoki, Golf Professional THE BALL *In My Hand I Hold A Ball,* *White And Dimpled, Rather Small.* *Oh, How Bland It Does Appear,* *This Harmless Looking Little Sphere.* *By Its Size I Could Not Guess,* *The Awesome Strength It Does Possess.* *But Since I Fell Beneath Its Spell,* *I've Wandered Through The Fires Of Hell.* *My Life Has Not Been Quite The Same,* *Since I Chose To Play This Stupid Game.* *It Rules My Mind For Hours On End,* *A Fortune It Has Made Me Spend.* *It Has Made Me Yell, Curse And Cry,* *I Hate Myself And Want To Die.* *It Promises A Thing Called Par,* *If I Can Hit It Straight And Far.* *To Master Such A Tiny Ball,* *Should Not Be Very Hard At All.* *But My Desires The Ball Refuses,* *And Does Exactly As It Chooses.* *It Hooks And Slices, Dribbles And Dies,* *And Even Disappears Before My Eyes.* *Often It Will Have A Whim,* *To Hit A Tree or Take A Swim.* *With Miles Of Grass On Which To Land,* *It Finds A Tiny Patch Of Sand.* *Then Has Me Offering Up My Soul,* *If Only It Would Find The Hole.* It's Made Me Whimper Like A Pup,* *And Swear That I Will Give It Up.* *And Take To Drink To Ease My Sorrow,* *But The Ball Knows...
