2017 2018 GREATER IOWA SCHOLARSHIP BOWLING TOUR THANKS TO OUR 2017-2018 TITLE SPONSORS STORM BOWLING EQUIPMENT SPECIAL THANKS TO TROPHY KING OFFICIAL AWARDS SPONSOR OF THE GISBT IN 2017-2018 26th ANNUAL TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS SUNDAY, MAY 13, 2018 LEISURE LANES DAVENPORT, IOWA OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER EVENT # 261 MORSE CLOSES CAREER IN STYLE WITH T OF C VICTORY KELLY CHARGES TO FIRST CAREER CHAMPIONSHIP MORSE BIDS FAREWELL WITH MOST IMPORTANT WIN OF CAREER In the 26 season history of the Greater Iowa Scholarship Bowling Tour, many of the finest young bowlers in the Midwest have made their mark. Few have stood any taller than Adam Morse. This month, the 22 year-old wrapped up one of the most impressive careers in GISBT history and he did it in grand fashion, by capturing the 2018 Tournament of Champions, and putting an explanation point of his Bowler of the Year season. Morse had come close to capturing the Tournament of Champions before; he was 3rd in 2015, and runner-up last season. However, it was obvious from the beginning that Morse began the day on a determined mission to end his career in style. He set a fast pace in qualifying by averaging 230.62 for his 8-game block, garnering the high qualifier medal. Then, in match play, he was even sharper, averaging 232.5 for his 8 games. Every time he was challenged, he fought back to regain the lead. His final victory did not come easy, as he was challenged by eventual runner-up Jayson Miner and Ray Wiegand who were both seeking their first tour win, as well as 8-time champion Anthony Dodge.

Morse lost the lead midway through match play, trailing by 2 pins. Then, he watched as his lead was trimmed to just 20 pins with 2 matches remaining. However; Morse was relentless, as he averaged 245 over his final 4 games to pull away for the win. His margin of victory was a deceiving 149 pins. The victory was his 6th on tour, as he became just the 9th player in boy s division history to rack up at least 6 titles in their career. The right-hander from West Des Moines, Iowa, made his tour debut back at the Waterloo stop in September 2011. And he competed in every tour event since a total of 69 consecutive which ties the record held by Davenport, Iowa s Emily Papke. He also racked up 33 match play finals (3rd all-time in the boy s division, trailing only Joe Roseman of Davenport, Iowa with 40 finals appearances, and A.J. Chapman, of Manchester, Iowa with 36.) He also finished his career with a whopping $8,800 in earnings on tour the 4th highest in boy s division history. Morse was never the most orthodox competitor, nor the most powerful, but he amassed his resume through steely determination, and his ability to make shots when they counted most and none of that became more evident than at this season s Tournament of Champions. In his 7 seasons on tour, Morse established some eye-popping records, as seen below. RECORDS SET BY ADAM MORSE 69 consecutive tournaments bowled (ties the tour s all time-record) CAREER PINFALL BOY S ALL TIME LEADER 183,582 CAREER GAMES BOWLED BOY S ALL TIME LEADER 816 For his 16 games, Morse averaged 231.56. He earned a $700 scholarship and the winner s plaque as well. Congratulations, Adam! STELLAR FIELD OF 36 COMPETES IN SEASON-ENDING EXTRAVAGANZA Each year s Tournament of Champions brings together the top field of players from the season, and this year s 36-player contingent was no different, as there were no less than a dozen past champions in the field, and the 36 players had combined their talents for 279 match play appearances and more than $61,000 in tour earnings during their careers. MINER IN CAREER FORM, TAKES RUNNER-UP Jayson Miner enjoyed his finest day on the lanes. The lanky Silvis, Illinois resident qualified for the 2nd match play finals of his promising career, and he maintained his sharp form all day, leading to a runner-up finish, and a big $400 payday. Miner, a hard-throwing 18 year-old, was consistent all day, and his performance easily topped his previous best showing on tour a 7th place finish at the October 2017 tour stop in Waterloo. On many days, Miner s performance would have been good enough to take home the win, but he happened to come up against a very determined champion.

WIEGAND FINISHES 3rd AT T OF C FOR 2nd STRAIGHT YEAR Ray Wiegand must really enjoy the year-end Tournament of Champions. The feisty 17-year old returned to the T of C for the 2nd time and both of those invitations resulted in 3rd place finishes. The 2-hander from Marshalltown, Iowa was in fine form this month, landing in his 5th match play finals, and hauling in a $225 scholarship for his efforts. Wiegand also placed 3rd at least season s Tournament of Champions in Cedar Rapids, and again at this past November s event in Muscatine. DODGE TAKES 4th Anthony Dodge, a 2-time Bowler of the Year who captured last season s Tournament of Champions, was this month s 4th place finisher. The 21 year-old southpaw from North Bend, Nebraska earned a $200 scholarship for his efforts. The high finish was Dodge s 23rd trip into the match play finals. Dodge is an 8- time champion on tour. SRAMEK STAKES 5th Brenden Sramek finished 5th; he earned a $175 scholarship for his performance. The 20 year-old from Bellevue, Nebraska was appearing in the 8th match play finals of his career. PAST CHAMPION HIBBARD PLACES 6th Billy Hibbard closed out a great 2017-2018 campaign by qualifying for his 6th match play finals of the season, and the 9th of his career. The 20 year-old stroker from Mukwonago, Wisconsin hauled in a $150 paycheck as a result of his performance. BOHO BAGS 7th Brent Boho returned to the finals for the 4th time in his career. The 20 year-old right-hander from Colgate, Wisconsin native finished 7th, earning a $125 scholarship. COBLE CLAIMS 8th Braxton Coble capped off a stellar season by qualifying for the 11th match play finals of his career. The hard-throwing right-hander from Ottumwa, Iowa eventually wound up in 8th place, hauling in a $110 scholarship. An interesting side note; all 5 members of the 2017-2018 boy s All Star Team qualified for this year s Tournament of Champions match play finals. THANKS TO LEISURE LANES & THE ROSEMAN FAMILY Leisure Lanes served as proud host to this year s Tournament of Champions for the 6th time; they first hosted the T of C in 2006. The GISBT sends its sincere appreciation to the Roseman family, and the entire staff for hosting GISBT competition again this season!

In the 26-season history of the GISBT, Duver concludes his career not only as a 3-time winner and 21-time match play finalist but as the player who competed in more tour events than any other bowler in the 26-season history of the GISBT. KELLY CLAIMS FIRST TOUR TITLE BREAKTHROUGH COMES AT YEAR-END FINALE KELLY BREAKS THROUGH FOR FIRST CAREER VICTORY Over the past several seasons, Michaela Kelly has earned her reputation as one of the tour s steadiest competitors. Since she began her career back in December 2014, she s racked up a dozen match play finals appearances. All that was missing from her impressive tour resume was a victory and that changed at this season s final tour stop, as she used the Tournament of Champions stage as a platform to garner her first victory on tour. CHAMP REELS OFF MOST IMPORTANT 6-BAGGER OF CAREER Kelly, a smooth-stroking 21 year-old from Bettendorf, Iowa has been tossing hints at victory in recent months; she was close to securing her first win at this past February s stop in Cedar Rapids, but eventually settled for the runner-up spot. This time out, she found herself trailing leader Hanna Duver by 67 pins heading into the all-important position round. And during the championship tilt, she fell behind early as well, but she then proceeded to reel off the most important 6-bagger of her life, posting a 237-192 victory to earn the championship. My hands were shaking, the champion said afterward. I knew Hanna would bowl well, and I would have to do something special to beat her. Her 237 was the 2nd highest game during the girl s finals, and it came on a demanding lane condition under the most extreme pressure. The champ was in good form the entire day, but the winning difference on this day was her 221 average over the final 5 games of match play. Kelly became just the 2nd female to earn her first victory at the Tournament of Champions, joining Hayley Ryan who won in 2016. Amazingly, that feat has happened 13 times in the boy s division. In victory, Kelly became the 81st different girl s champion in tour history. For her 14 games, she averaged 204.71. The spoils of victory included the championship plaque, a check for $350, and a permanent place on Champion s Row. Congratulations, Michaela! DUVER NABS RUNNER-UP Hanna Duver, one of 4 former champions in this month s girl s finals field, nabbed the runner-up showing. The 18 year-old was appearing in her 5th consecutive Tournament of Champions, and this represented her 25th match play finals appearance. The 2-time tour champion qualified 2nd, just 39 pins out of the lead, and she grabbed the lead midway through the finals, eventually holding a 67-pin lead heading into the position round. There, she fell victim to the eventual champs 6-bagger, and was relegated to the runner-up spot. The Indianola, Iowa native reeled in a $200 scholarship for her performance.

6-TIME TOUR CHAMP CRAWFORD CLAIMS 3rd Kayla Crawford, a 6-time tour winner, was this month s 3rd place finisher. The Silvis, Illinois resident, appearing in the 29th match play finals of her stellar career. The 20 year-old earned a $175 scholarship, and it raised her career earnings on tour to $5,922, as she continues her effort to become just the 6th player in girl s division history to surpass the $6,000 mark in career earnings. QUALIFYING LEADER COUREY PLACES 4th Cassidy Courey rolled into the year-end finale hot off the heels of capturing her first GISBT victory at last month s Big Weekend in Davenport. She continued that fine form by grabbing the qualifying lead heading into match play. She struggled to find the range in match play, however, and it led to a 4th place finish. The talented stroker from Brooklyn Center, Minnesota took home a $150 payday for her performance. This was career match play finals #10 for Courey. HUDDLESTON TAKES 5th Kelly Huddleston, one of 4 past champions in this month s girl s finals field, finished 5th; she won a $125 scholarship. Huddleston became one of the tour s top players in 2017-2018, capturing the season opening event in Cedar Rapids, and qualifying for 4 match play finals. SMITH FINISHES 6th In opening ceremonies, Breanna Smith was recognized as this season s Most Improved Bowler. She followed up that presentation with another trip into the match play finals the 4th of her promising career. The right-hander from Marion, Iowa would go on to finish in 6th place, earning a $110 scholarship for her efforts.
