PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE The Setting: SOFTBALL NOTES The Presbyterian College softball team has an extremely busy week. After traveling to Anderson for a doubleheader, the Blue Hose return home for their Big South Conference home opener Wednesday when they host Gardner-Webb in a doubleheader. Then, PC reamins at home for a threegame set over the weekend against Radford. Normalcy Is Key The Presbyterian College softball team is looking for a bit of normalcy in the weather. The Blue Hose had to postpone their mid-week game at Winthrop due to the forecast. So far this season, PC has had seven games postponed or canceled due to the weather. THE INSIDE SCOOP Movin On Up Mary Gordon has continued her steady climb up the PC record book. Last week, she moved into a tie for fifth with 66 appearances. Her next start will also put her in fifth place for career starts. She currently has 59 starts in the circle in her young career. Sensational Sophomore Sophomore Taylor Staten has had an impressive year thus far. Her seven homers move her into a tie for fifth place on the single-season home run list. With her seven bombs, Staten has moved into a tie for fifth place on the career list as well. She currently has 11 round-trippers in her career. Gordon now has 269 strikeouts in her two-plus seasons with the Blue Hose. Starting A New Streak After reeling off seven wins earlier this season, PC had dropped five straight before three straight wins to end last week. The Blue Hose won their first-ever conference game a week ago and are looking to extend their winning streak this week as they play three more games. Parker s Playing Well Rachel Parker began the season a little slow. However, she has come on as of late. In the doubleheader against the Mountaineers, Parker was four-ofsix for a.667 average. She also had 13 putouts without an error in the field. Brittany s Bringing It Brittany Howell has started to emerge as a solid threat at the plate. In the doubleheader at Furman, she paced the Blue Hose by hitting.600. In the twinbill, she had three hits in five at bats. Two of the hits went for doubles as she drove in three. Playing The Paladins Close After shutting down Furman in the first game, winning 4-1, the Blue Hose and Paladins played to a scoreless draw through four innings of the second game. However, PC committed some untimely errors, giving up four unearned runs. In 13 innings of pitching, the Blue Hose allowed Furman to hit just.200 on the day..400 Club In PC s first four home softball games of the 2009 slate, the Blue Hose have five student-athletes that played in all four games and are hitting over.400. Taylor Staten, Kayla Handy and Brittany Howell have all hit at least.400 in their last six contests. Save It For Another Day The doubleheader that was slated for Feb. 28 at Savannah State has been postponed. The teams will reschedule the doubleheader in the near future. PC has never lost to Savannah State since moving to Division I, winning all the contests by a combined 66-1 score. The doubleheader at UNC Charlotte that was postponed marked four straight contests that PC has been unable to play. Leslie Loves Being In The Circle Rookie Leslie Hensley performed well at the USC Upstate Tournament. She picked up two victories while recording an ERA of just 1.50. She started both games and tossed 12 innings of work, throwing one complete game en route to earning Big South Pitcher of the Week honors. Miller s Memorable Honor Sophomore Amanda Miller put together a solid opening weekend, starting four games while smashing two long bombs en route to a six RBI performance. One of her fourbase hits was a grand slam against Jacksonville, securing the win for PC. For her effort, Miller was tabbed the Big South of the Week.
