Sponsorship Proposal
To represent your country is one of the greatest honours in sport, to do so at the Olympics is the ul7mate. Leila Mostaço- Guidolin seeks to represent Brazil in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, in PyeongChang. Hopefully, all her trajectory will inspire increased par7cipa7on in sport, raise the standard of biathlon in Brazil and in Manitoba, s7mulate ambi7on and offer a goal for young athletes to aspire to. OVERVIEW Leila is originally from Brazil and she has been living in Winnipeg since 2010, where she saw snow for the first time on her life. She was 27 years old. One day, in 2011, a Canadian friend invited her to try cross country skiing in a local community trail. That was the beginning of a whole new chapter in Leila s life. In 2012 Leila won the Brazilian National Championship - held in Argentina and got accepted as part of the Brazilian National XC Ski Team. Since then, Leila has been working hard to improve her skiing at the same time she works spreading the word about how beneficial sports can be and how you can overcome barriers in order to pursue a dream. Leila Mostaço-Guidolin was a high performance swimmer for more than 15 years. She is an athlete driven by an incredible determination, who does not measure efforts to successfully achieve her goals. Up to date, she has been racing at international level without any financial assistance other than her own resources. The athlete has shown the commitment and drive to progress from regional to international level over the last two seasons. It is believed that with support, she has what it takes to perform alongside the best athletes in the world at the most important sporting event in the world, the Olympics. There are still 3 years until the Olympics in PyeongChang with qualifying period beginning in January 2017. For the next year the athlete will be racing focused on getting qualified for the World s Championships in 2017. Over this period, the goal is to have an increasing campaign awareness and financial backing.
Project Proposal There are five key stages to the proposal: 1. Season 2013 / 2014 - Strategy & planning, racing development (high performance level), campaign promotion & awareness. 2. Season 2014 / 2015 - racing development (high performance level), campaign promotion & awareness. 3. Season 2015 / 2016 - Qualifying period for the 2017 FIS World s Championship (Lahti - FIN); 4. Season 2016 / 2017 - Olympic qualification period high performance focus; 5. PyeongChang 2018 - Olympic participation The qualifying period for the Olympics begins 2 years before the event. Skiers must participate in at least one edition of the World s Championship and accumulate FIS points through competing in FIS classified international races over the one year period preceding the Games. The Olympic cutoff is 300 FIS points for athletes seeking the B standard - which is the case of Brazil and all other nations considered in development. The points accumulated are also used to rank all athletes actively competing during certain period or season. The Brazilian minimum standard required to participate in the World Championships is 400 FIS points, according to FIS lists officially updated 6 times per season.
Goals & Objectives Maintain the training structure already established (coaches, nutrition, access to facilities); Acquisition of the remaining equipment (skis) and materials needed every season, for skis preparation (waxes, brushes, etc); Participate in FIS sanctioned races in Canada, USA and Europe; Get qualified for the 2017 FIS World s Championships; Get qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
About the athlete Name: Leila Büttner Mostaço-Guidolin FIS number: 3085005 Physical Trainer: Jeff Fisher Coaches: Brent Bottomley, Jim Ballendine, Gail Niniimaa (biathlon) Place of Birth: Ribeirão Preto, SP Occupation: Medical Physicist, Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Engineering Birthdate: 13/08/1983 Weight: 65kg Height: 1.71m Citizenship: Brazilian
About the Athlete - Training Physical Training The athlete has an specific training program, exclusively designed by Jeff Fisher, from Elite Performance. Elite Performance is a reference in the area of athletic high performance training in Canada. Besides all the physical training and monitoring, the athlete has a personal EONS (Elite Optimal Nutrition System) diet to meet all the specific nutritional needs throughout each phase of training, from January to January. Technical Training There is no secret there: with rare exceptions, Brazilian athletes of winter sports don t initiate their technical training until they are on their late twenties. Most of Brazilian athletes get their first contact with snow during trips they make abroad, after high school or early years during university; when they decide to start training and competing, they are generally much older than other athletes, specially when compared with the best athletes in the world for such sports. By knowing such challenges and aiming to overcome all obstacles, Leila has two coaches responsible for all technical preparation.. Her main coach - Brent Bottomley - was responsible for the Canadian Biathlon team during the 80s/90s. Last season Leila has added Guido Visser (coach) and Jaqueline Mourao (best Brazilian skier) to her support team. Together, they are working on specific aspects of higher level racing techniques. Visser is a former Canadian Olympic athlete & certified coach who has more than 10 years of experience coaching Brazilian athletes. Jaqueline has the experience that perfectly matches Leila s trajectory. She has been there: from learning how to ski all the way to getting qualified for 3 winter olympic games (in two different sports - biathlon and XC ski) and 2 summer olympic games (mountain bike). Practice focusing on the improvement of basic skills and racing-specific strategies are part of Leila s routine.
About the Athlete - Results Despite the short time training cross country skiing (and biathlon), the athlete has already accumulated impressive results in both national and international competitions. Leila had her first contact with XC skiing during the 2011/2012 season. In August 2012 she was already crowned champion of the X Brazilian Championship of Cross Country Skiing, held in Ushuaia (ARG). Below there is a list of the main results obtained during the 2012-2014 period, which were Leila s first two racing seasons: National 1st place - X Brazilian Championship of Cross Country Skiing, Ushuaia (ARG) - 10km F Ski Marathons 1st place - MB Cup/Loppet, Pinawa (CAN) - 30km C 18th place (77 competitors) - Pepsi Challenge, Biwabik, (USA) - 24km F 56th place (162 competitors) - City of Lakes, Minneapolis (EUA)- 33km F Regional Races Provincial Championships 1st place - Riding Mountain Loppet, Wasagaming (CAN) - 30km C 4th place - MB Cup # 1, Birch (CAN) - 10km C 5th place - MB Cup # 2, Birch (CAN) - 15km F 3rd place - MB Cup # 3, Kenora (CAN) - 1.2km C Biathlon 6th place - Provincial Championship Distance, Falcon Lake (CAN) - 15km 3rd place - Provincial Championship Sprint, Falcon Lake (CAN) - 7.5km *F: skate (or freestyle ); C: classic
About the Athlete - Results The 2013/2014 season was mainly focused on technique. The athlete had very limited budget available for that season, so the decision was to stay racing locally, investing heavily in training camps and by then acquiring more experience. The highlight of the season was her first participation in the American Birkebeiner 52km skate race, in Cable WI. Despite the adverse conditions, Leila completed the event. American Birkebeiner 2014 52km F - 2708/3738 overall, 431/700 female, 46/74 agegroup American Birkebeiner 2015 24km F - 308/1377 overall, 95/602 female, 4/40 age-group Regional Races 2014 s Birkie was an historical event. Average times were more than 1h slower than previous editions due to a severe snow storm 1 day before the start. About the Athlete - Results International Ski Federation (FIS) Races Apart from all the previously mentioned races, the athlete has also participated in FIS events. These races are very important, since through them athletes get points that are considered for a world-level ranking. For participation in major events such as World Championships, World Cups and Olympics, athletes must reach a certain threshold; to obtain the classification for the Olympic Games under the B quota (which is the one Brazil is in), the athlete must have no more than 300 FIS points. The cut-off established by CBDN (Brazilian Snow Sports Federation) to participate in World Championships is 400 points. The average is calculated based on the best five results for each athlete during the season (~1 year period). During the first half of the 2014/2015 season, Leila has managed to participate in 5 races. Although her main focus is set to get qualified for 2017 World s Championship, Leila has missed qualifying already for the 2015 World s Championship by just 16 FIS points. By considering the average of the best 5 races, unsatisfactory results can be left out of account. It is very important as sometimes athletes have to face health problems like colds, fatigue, injuries, etc. Throughout the season of 2014/2015, Leila raced only in the minimum number of races, so her average was calculated based on all races, including results from when she was injured and had little time to rest between events, due to traveling. Leila s avg (2015) Olympic cut-off World s cut-off 700 The graphic shows the athlete s evolution in terms of FIS points, 525 during her three seasons racing in 350 official international events. FIS points must be as low as possible. 175 For example, 400 points was the minimum qualifying standard set for 0 participating in the 2015 World s West Yellowstone (10km F) - USA Canmore (10km C) - CAN Silver Star (10km F) - CAN Thunder Bay (10km F) - CAN Wirth Park (5km F) - USA West Yellowstone (10km F) - USA St. Paul (5km F) - USA Ripton (5km C) - USA Priekuli (5km C) - Latvia Priekuli (5km F) - Latvia Tsaghkadzor (10km F) - Armenia Tsaghkadzor (5km C) - Armenia Championship that are happening in Falun. Leila s points average during the qualifying period was 416 points, after only three seasons - from learning how ski to racing in official events.
About the Athlete - Results Brazil has 14 athletes registered at FIS, being part of the national team. After this season, and racing only the minimum number of FIS events, Leila is currently ranked as the 4th best Brazilian athlete, among both men and women. It is important to highlight however, that the first three Brazilian athletes already have, on average, eight seasons of experience on snow. It is worth noticing that Leila has been ahead of an athlete who has represented Brazil in the 2006 Winter Olympics, in Turin (Italy). Additionally to the Brazilian National ranking, Leila is currently ranked at the 8th place, among all males and females South American athletes (28 in total). Due to lack of financial support, Leila has not been able to compete in many races, including the ones held in South America, which are the ones that most of the Brazilian athletes use to reach better results, and consequently, get better FIS points. By racing mostly in the USST (USA) and NorAm (CAN) circuit Leila is being exposed to higher level competition, which will translate soon into positive results in the long run.
