Introduction Having taken up the post of rugby development office (RDO) in April 2009 my first year has now passed. It has been a hugely busy year for rugby development throughout Moray, and I am delighted to report growth in all aspects of rugby in the area. My Aims for the year can be seen on the next page however our main goals were:- To increase the number of people participating in rugby, both within the local schools and the local rugby clubs. To increase the number of volunteers involved in rugby Strengthen the school to club links The uptake of coaching from Primary schools has been very good this year with all primary schools in Moray being offered coaching over the season. This has seen over 1,310 boys and girls receiving coaching in tag rugby. In the Forres Academy and Buckie High associated school group s (ASG s) P6/7 pupils were given the chance to put there skills against other schools while in Elgin High and Academy ASG s P4/5 were given this opportunity. Primary Schools have also benefited from Scottish Rugby partnership with the Food Standards agency this year with almost 150 pupils (our full allocation) taking part in the Healthy lifestyles/rugby project. Secondary rugby has taken a big boost this year with PE departments handing over their classes for rugby during curricular time. This has seen around 360 secondary boys and girls receive rugby as part of the curriculum. Secondary rugby has also been helped with the voluntary work of our four rugby champions promoting the sport throughout their own schools. Club Rugby is starting to develop through the above opportunities with new players coming in and previous players returning. We have a large number of new coaches attending SRU coaching courses and coaching updates which is developing our players across the board. This should boost the representation of the Moray clubs when the pathway teams meet next month. Rugby development in the area has had a huge boost this season from the money awarded from awards for all. This has/will help us, amongst other things to put on larger festivals, fund the purchase of new equipment, support our rugby clubs and cut the costs of putting coaches through training. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support in my first year as your RDO. None of the steps forward that we have made would be possible with out the continued support from amongst many the local rugby clubs, college and school pupils, volunteers and our sponsors. Primary School Rugby 2009/10 Number of Primary Schools Visited 24 Number Of Children Coached in Rugby (P5 7) 1,310 Number Of Children Attending ASG festivals 390 Number Of Children Attending Regional or national Festivals Number Of Children Taking Part in FSA Project 45 147 (150 Allocation) Number Of After School Clubs 5 All primary schools in Moray were offered coaching and an invitation to a tag rugby festival in their ASG s. The coaching and the festivals ran through the autumn, winter and spring terms, this ensured that clubs were playing rugby so that there would be an obvious pathway between school and club rugby. Festivals were held at the three clubs that have junior sections Moray (P4/5), Buckie (P6/7) and Kinloss (P6/7). Schools brought teams of 10 on the days. Our intention is to make these bigger next season now we have additional funding. There are currently 5 after school clubs in the area ran by volunteers. These at Milnes, Mosstodloch, Findochty, Burghead and Hopeman primary schools. Of these Milnes visited Murrayfield last may to play in the International 7 s primary festival on the back pitches and played the final on the Murrayfield turf. March also saw Milnes and Mosstodloch playing in a Grampian wide festival at Aberdeen sports village. All involved had a great time at both events. We had a lot of support from, active schools staff, the associated clubs, Moray college students and volunteers who helped out co-ordinating teams, scoring and refereeing. Every primary school pupil who has taken part in rugby this season was given a flyer with training dates and times as well as contact for all of the local clubs. Moray councils sports coaches have been providing rugby sessions at the schools stay and play sessions after their CPD at the start of the season. These have been going to all primary ages.
Secondary School Rugby 2009/10 Number of Secondary Schools Visited 6 Number Of Pupils Coached in Rugby (S1 2) 360 Number Of After School/Lunch Clubs 4 Number Of Rugby Champions 4 It is essential in developing our sport for secondary pupils to experience rugby during class time. I hope in the seasons to come the figures in both curricular and afterschool/lunch clubs will further grow as they have done this season. Secondary schools were offered taster blocks in rugby for their S1/2 pupils. 5 out of the 8 secondary schools took these taster sessions with the majority of classes being all boys. Taster sessions were 6 7 week blocks in contact rugby including passing and running skills, tackling skills and decision making. Club information flyers were given out to all participants in these groups. Rugby champions have been working within their schools to get after school/lunch clubs up and running. These are now going at, Speyside high, Forres Academy, Elgin High and Elgin Academy. Forres academy took a team to Inverness to play the highland festival and had great results and enjoyed the Scotland U20 v France game.
Other Activities Coach Education Foundation coaching and refereeing course in July at Moray RFC 16 people attended. Sports coaches CPD was held in July in Elgin 12 people attended. Youth Coaching course at Moray RFC 8 Senior students attended Foundation course for moray college 9 college students attended Level one refereeing in September at Eight Acres Hotel 10 attended CPD was offered to all secondary and primary schools teachers 1 interested Coaching Updates Coaching Updates were rolled out to the club coaches and volunteers. These covered Scottish rugby National themes which are hand catch, the offload, ball presentation and the contact area. Uptake was good on these and has shown positive results. Rugby Road Show One leg of the Rugby Road show went ahead at Buckie high school. This had a huge attraction on the day. Regular attendance was not achieved by interested players so after schools rugby could not be maintained. We hope to role revised versions of this out at the start of the new season. Street Rugby We had one well attended street rugby sessions this season which was part of the street sports carnival. This attracted around 180 people over the course of the day. However even after heavy promotion other sessions have been poorly attended Moray Community Rugby Moray Community rugby have been working hard this season on ideas of promoting rugby in the moray area as well as other aspects of the game. Members of all four clubs attend the quarterly meetings and we would like to thank them for their continued support.
Scottish Rugby Camps August 2009 saw the first Scottish rugby camp to be held in Moray. Around 80 players from Moray and further came to Moray RFC to have fun improve their skills and meet some of Scotland top international players. The camp returned during the Easter break (2010) and saw around 90 players attending. The Scottish rugby camp will be returning this summer and we are again hoping for an increase in numbers for this. Promotion We have done a lot of work on promotion rugby this season in the Moray areas. Below are a few of the methods we have used Flyers new flyers were developed form may 2009 which included information and contact details for all of the local clubs. Around 2000 of these flyers have been handed out over the year. Version 2 has just been printed in a new format that will fit leaflet displays better. These will go into full circulation from May 2010. Website - we had www.rugbyscotland.org produced this season which is sponsored by MJD systems. This is updated regularly with information on development work, up coming courses and successes in the area. Posters posters have been out around all of the primary and secondary rugby advertising activities such as local Clubs, coaching courses for senior pupils, festivals and street rugby. Press We have had a strong relationship with the press over the last year. This includes festival announcements on local radio and adverts and Photo specials in the local papers. We have had a good return from these with people contacting us for information on local activities. And a noticeable increase in rugby s profile.
KPI Report April 2009 to March 2010 KPI 1 4-6 weeks of coaching in a minimum of 12 identified primary schools During the past year we have delivered blocks of a minimum of 6 weeks in 24 primary schools (See Appendix A) Organise and deliver 3 festivals for primary schools. Our First festival was originally scheduled to be held on the 29 th of September at Buckie RFC. Due to weather conditions the festival was moved to the 6 th of October. The second festival was held on the 26 th November at Kinloss rugby ground. The 3 rd Festival was held at Moray RFC on the 25 th of February. Deliver FSA programme for 150 P5 and P6 pupils West End, Bishopmill, Mosstowie and Cluny primary schools all took part in the FSA project, this was received by 150 children over the year.
KPI 2 Support curricular rugby in all secondary schools in Moray Council area. All Schools have been supported over the past year. Speyside high, Elgin High, Elgin Academy and Forres Academy have all received curricular coaching over the past year. All schools were offered curricular rugby. Coordinate 4 local competitions/festivals for the above schools No festivals/competitions went ahead this season due to a lack of interest/teams. Forres Academy did attend the Highland 10 s festival before the Scotland U20 v France U20 game Ensure that 4 schools have a rugby champion. There are currently rugby champions at 4 schools. Rugby champions are at Elgin Academy, Elgin High School, Forres Academy and Speyside High. Support Elgin Academy/High to enter the Schools Cup at U15 and U18 Elgin Schools had a team entered at U15 level. Hopefully next season will see a more competitive team at this level(s). Deliver 1 Youth Coaching programme to secondary school students One YCC took place this season with 8 secondary pupils completing the course
KPI 3 To recruit, retain and develop coaches to support the increase in growth Through coach education courses and advertising we have recruited some more coaches. We also have some new volunteers from senior classes at both Elgin High and Elgin Academy. There are also some Council sports coaches who now have foundation qualifications and are including rugby in their sessions. Co-deliver on a minimum of I UKCC course I have tutored on UKCC L1 in Inverurie Deliver 4 national coaching updates to club coaches I have delivered 8 national coaching updates to club coaches over the year. Deliver 2 joint foundation courses or Foundation course We have delivered 3 joint foundation courses this year. One at Moray RFC, One on the YCC and one to Moray college students. (See Coach education Section) Deliver a teacher s in-service course There has been one teachers in-service scheduled however this had to be cancelled to lack of interest (1 person). I have delivered 2 in-service sessions to the Moray Councils Sport Coaches/Active Schools Coordinators
KPI 4 Street Rugby - Deliver 6 blocks of street rugby We have delivered 16 Street rugby sessions with mixed results over the year. KPI 5 Moray: To have a team at S1, S2, 15, U16 & U18 level Moray currently has teams at each of these levels. Kinloss: To have a team at/ support the development of a team at. We are currently working on links between Forres Academy and Kinloss to try and get their S1/2 team up and running. Buckie: Support the development of P4/5 section This has been supported over the season and numbers have decreased and increased over the season.
