KENOSHA COMMUNITY SAILING CENTER Our goal is to educate Kenosha youth and adults in the sport of sailing while integrating academic, leadership and life skills. We also promote awareness of the Kenosha Harbor, as well as Lake Michigan s resources, and environment for people of all ages through the sport of sailing. The Kenosha Community Sailing Center is a nonprofit organized exclusively for educational, charitable and scientific purposes. Our organization is the result of a collaborative effort between the Kenosha Yacht Club, local organizations and community schools. We welcome you aboard!

TEN YEARS AND GOING STRONG I cannot believe it has been 10 years since the Kenosha Community Sailing Center (KCSC) was incorporated and granted it's 501c3 status. John Burhani, Bob Kearns and I were teaching sailing to kids before that, but we started making real progress after we became a non-profit. There are a number of very funny stories about our efforts back then but those stories will wait for another time. When we first started we didn't have a way to properly put the Old Butterfly sailboats in the water. The kids would throw the boats over the dock wall (see above photo) into the water. I would ask the students, if they would have their fathers pick them up so we had the muscle needed to pull the boats out for the day! The park department would drop off a small dock for the summer that we would put in the water to help pull the boats out at the end of the day.

Over the years, we received a grant to buy the materials to build a building to store our sailing equipment... most of the labor to build it was donated. Last year we received a grant allowing us to purchase four new Hartley 12's, we bought the fifth sailboat with money donated when John died. (Hartley picture) When you drive by the harbor in the summer, always look for the boat with the Blue Bird on the sail, that's John's boat. The Hartley 12's were the first new boats we've ever been able to purchase. Today, we have a number of keel-boats that are used for adult lessons and a variety of small boats for youth sailing classes. A long-term relationship with Harborside High School, they bring down new students every August for a week and have a sailing club run by John Gransee. We are revamping our youth classes this summer to include STEM topics, there's a lot of physics and geometry involved in sailing. We have Free Open Sailing for members on Tuesday nights throughout the summer. Most importantly, a very active KCSC board with a vision of the future! The Kenosha Community Sailing Center is truly what the name implies; an organization run by volunteers that allows access to boating and Lake Michigan to the Kenosha community. Every year, we are more organized and have more community involvement (Volunteers are always welcome)... it will be interesting to see where the organization is in another 10 years! OUR FLEET The Kenosha Community Sailing Center maintains a fleet of boats that can be used by full Kenosha Yacht Club members after being certified by KCSC instructors. Our fleet includes: Small Boats Hartley 12 s Opti prams O Pen Bics Butterflies 420s Hartley 12 Butterflies O Pen Bic

HARBORSIDE ACADEMY + SAILING Bill Haithcock, Harborside Academy s principal, set his students course years ago and his unwavering support has meant that hundreds of Kenosha youth have learned to sail. Each year, Harborside Academy s incoming freshmen are given classroom instruction and then brought to the Kenosha Community Sailing Center for on-the-water lessons by John Gransee. John is a Chemistry teacher at Harborside, Vice President of KCSCS s Board, an accomplished sailor, and an incredible community volunteer. Harborside Academy and the Kenosha Community Sailing Center have always had a special connection. In fact, three of the founding Board Members of the KCSC were Harborside teachers. 2018, will be the 8th year that Harborside has partnered with KCSC and we couldn t be any happier or proud of the efforts made by Harborside and John to keep this experiential learning experience going forward for KUSD students.

HARTLEY FAMILY YOUTH SAILING SCHOLARSHIP The Hartley Family Youth Sailing Scholarship was created in honor of Tom B. Hartley, an avid sailor, by his family, so that more youth in Kenosha will have the opportunity to learn and experience the fun of sailing. The scholarship is a partnership with the Kenosha Community Sailing Center, the Kenosha Yacht Club, the Kenosha Community Foundation and the Hartley Family. Please visit our website www.kenoshasailing.org to apply or learn more. PARTNERING WITH REC PLEX This summer KCSC will be entering into a new partnership with Pleasant Prairie s RecPlex and provide sailing programming for youth ages 8 years old and up. This specialized Sailing Camp will provide transportation and wrap-around childcare for youth living on the west side of Kenosha. We are hopeful that this new partnership will be a lasting one, giving children living on the west side easy access to one of Kenosha s magical places the harbor where they can learn how to sail. Registration for this camp will be through RecPlex www.recplexonline.com (262) 947-0437

YOUTH SAILING (AGES 8-15) Our youth sailing lessons are full day, M-F and include STEM activities, environmental education, an introduction to racing and summer fun! 6/18-6/22 Sailing + the Wind Young sailors will have a great time learning how to sail and exploring the science of wind. 7/23-7/27 Sailing + Fishing Fun is what the young sailors will catch this week as they learn how to sail and fish Lake Michigan. 7/30-8/3 Sailing + Small Boats Kids will have a blast experiencing all sorts of watercraft this week...canoes, kayaks and all things that float! 8/6-8/10 Sailing + Big Boats Sailors will experience the thrill of a keelboat ride on big Lake Michigan waters. 8/13-8/17 Sailing + the Waves Kids will learn about Lake Michigan s sunken boats, hidden treasures and how to artfully tell their own tall tales in this action packed week of sailing and beach fun. The primary goal of our youth sailing classes is to teach youngsters how to sail responsibly, enjoy the sport, improve their skills, and become sailors for life. All courses include science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities, environmental education, an introduction to sailboat racing and explorations of Kenosha Harbor s resources.

KENOSHA YACHT CLUB COMMODORE Youth sailing at the Kenosha Yacht has a long history. Many children and youth have learned to take the helm and catch the wind throughout the years. More recently, under the guidance of Jim Buck, the Kenosha Community Sailing Center took shape and this year they celebrate 10 years of teaching children, youth, and adults the art of sailing. On behalf of the Kenosha Yacht Club I wish them a Happy 10 th Anniversary. I am honored to have a word in the KCSC 2018 catalog and encourage readers to look through it, learn more about the KCSC, and then to support the many sponsors include in these pages. The KCSC and KYC, though separate in our legal structure, share members, space, visions, and goals. Working together to spread the word that Lake Michigan is a great resource to the community and it s surrounding areas, we make sailing a top priority. The KYC also encourages power boaters to be active in our organization. The Kenosha Yacht Club invites you to consider joining us and taking part in our many activities and benefits. We offer racing for Buccaneer 18 s and keel boats on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings throughout the summer. Summer dock space is available for rent to day sailors and we provide crane access. We also offer winter storage for both power boats and sailboats. Our KYC Port of Friendship is a great place to meet new friends and share your love of water with others. We are accepting membership applications and would love to have you join our club.

However, you do not need to own a boat to become a member of the KYC and with a full membership, sailing lessons or qualifying previous sailing experience, you are welcome to participate in the KCSC summer program sailing on one of their fleet boats. As a member, you will receive a 10% discount on KCSC sailing lessons. The KYC also seeks to match boat captains with crew. Throughout the year we have great parties and educational events and we reach out to support the community in a variety of ways. An added benefit is our reciprocity with many other yacht clubs along the shores of Lake Michigan and beyond. Here s to a great boating season! WALK TO SUSTAIN OUR GREAT LAKES In 2017, we supported a Walk to Sustain Our Great Lakes event led by Julia Robson and Alyssa Armbruster. These remarkable women set out on a 343 mile trek along the coasts of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior to raise awareness for the Great Lakes and freshwater conservation. An estimated 70 people (50+ walkers) attended the event and over $1,000 was raised to support environmental organizations working to sustain the Great Lakes. We were thrilled that the Kenosha Yacht Club, Kenosha Public Museum, Kenosha Sportfishing and Conservation Association, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Kenosha History Center, Kenosha Water Utility and Mayor John Antaramian were all there with us supporting this effort. We will continue to support Walk to Sustain Our Great Lakes efforts in 2018. Working together, we will accomplish great things for our Great Lakes.

SAILAWAYS FOR KENOSHA "Magic" Sailaways are our chance to give to the community. We donate a sailing trip to different charitable organizations to help them raise funds. One of our 2017 Sailaways was to Hospice Alliance. Jennifer Dooley and Associates purchased the sailing trip at the Hospice Alliance Gala. She had this to say about her experience: We scheduled our sailing trip to celebrate two of the birthdays in our group and it was truly a magical excursion. We loved watching the sunset over our hometown from Lake Michigan. Captain Mike also took extra good care of us and accommodated our request to sail past our home on 3rd Avenue. We are grateful to have the Kenosha Community Sailing Center in our community and look forward to going on a sail again soon!" If your nonprofit is looking for a fun and exciting donation item, please contact us at info@kenoshasailing.org

KCSC TO PILOT A SAILING AND STEM COURSE FOR MIDDLE SCHOOLERS In an effort to expand and enhance our program offerings, KCSC has decided to join the 400+ programs nationwide taking part in Reach, US Sailing s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education Initiative. Reach exposes youth sailors to STEM and environmental education while using sailing as an educational platform. We will be offering an intensive two-week Reach program (July 9- July 20) for middle school age youth. We are piloting the program in 2018 to determine how to best utilize the program in Kenosha. Research has shown proven success with Reach participants increasing their STEM based knowledge on an average of 13% and we are hoping to see similar results. This exciting national program challenges both bodies and minds. We are very excited to be a part of this initiative. The curriculum reinforces our primary goal of educating Kenosha youth about sailing while integrating academic, leadership and life skills.
