Soundings Newsletter of South Port Sailing Club August 2018 Message from Commodore Ryan Masse Time is flying by! As always, there s a ton of activities going on in the summer months. Racing is in full swing with the open series ending August 2nd and the start of our fall series on the 9th of August. Thank you to Dave Robichaud, RC chair for the open series, and Kevin Mogyorody for manning the committee boat. On July 14 & 15th SPSC hosted the Hal Ebert South-Western Ontario Championship Shark Regatta. SPSC had a good showing, having taken the top 2 spots with John Baker on Scallywag winning the championship over a fleet of 17, and Darcy Fuller coming in 2nd on Cheers. The fleet was made up of 11 out of town boats, and 6 SPSC sharks. Thanks to all participants and to those that volunteered! Unfortunately due to inclement weather we had to cancel the SPSC Cruise In on the 21st. Hopefully we can resurrect this idea next year. This month we have two great social events that I hope to see everyone out to. We have Happy Hour scheduled for the 3rd and Louise has organized another Sip & Savour on the 11th with a European twist this year. John & Louise are looking for volunteers to assist with the 5th OSA Regional Championships-Western Ontario on August 25th-26th. If you have any time you can spare that weekend to help out, please contact them. A couple more items worth mentioning, with the purchase of the defibrillator, we held 2 classes and managed to train 15 people in CPR and the use of the AED. Also, Matt has the website coming along nicely that will allow all of us to log into members only area to post classifieds, view membership specific information and the like. In the meantime, member roster changes are published on the calendar page in Soundings. Stay tuned as we will be creating accounts for everyone shortly. Enjoy the rest of the summer and all the planned activities! Try to stay cool out there. Classes are full & the kids and adults are having a great time! From Property Chair, Dave Robichaud If you wonder what your property committee has been up to, a few highlights are as follows. All 5 new composite picnic tables were delivered and are in use. Thank you to the members who carried out assembly. 4 old ones were disposed of. The clubhouse & school were power washed in June. A new fan motor was installed in the men s washroom & the exhaust fan is now operating in the main room keeping it much cooler. A few deck chairs were replaced and the garden and pots are in full bloom. Thank you Lane White for helping plant and to the Mainstays for covering the cost of the flowers again this season. 3 trailer loads of debris have been taken to the dump. Thank you to Joe Davidson and Joe Soles for doing these runs for us. We will be rebuilding the entrance flower garden some time this summer/fall. Once we have a plan in place, we will let you know. You have all probably seen the new signs asking everyone to slow down entering the property. Upgrading is continuing on the sprinkler system, and finally, thank you to all members for attending their clubhouse duty week. 2
