4-H Project Display Requirements Display Board Guidelines for State Fair 4-H Exhibits Display boards are great ways to share that information, but when viewers walk by, they spend only 60-90 seconds looking at each display board. Make yours stand out by highlighting the main points of your project in a fun, interesting way. Follow these guidelines to create a display board for the state fair. SHAPE Design your exhibit so information fits on the display. Remember, you have 1 large surface, and 2 smaller side wings SPACE Your display should only discuss one main topic. This will help it look neat and un-crowded ATTACHMENTS When attaching pictures or objects to your board make sure they are secure. Use glue for pictures and paper, and consider wires, zip ties or staples to attach bulkier items. Do not attach items that are so heavy that your board can t stand. TEXT Make sure that all the text on your display is easy to read. Use a large font for the title, and smaller fonts for the headings and body text. Text must be readable from 3-5 feet away. Use large bold letters. Dark letters on a light background works best. SIZE Display boards for the state fair must measure 4 ft. wide x 3 ft. tall. They should be made of lightweight cardboard, but not poster board. Pre-cut boards are available at most craft and shopping centers. No part of your display may extend beyond these boundaries. DISPLAY BOOKS Your e-record book should accompany your board. You may use 3-ring binders or other notebooks that will keep the pages securely inside. Do not use slider-type binders. 5

FAIR NEWS 4-H General/Natural & Family Consumer Science E-Record Tips for Record Books Final Check for your E-record Book! Over the last several months we have offered guidance and tips for completing your e-record book. You can find the Colorado 4-H Users Guide and Tips for General and Family Consumer Projects, all exhibit requirements, project tip sheets and a copy of the score sheet that the judge will use at www.colorado4h.org. Click on Project Resources and Record Books. Remember: Record all project related information in the activity log If your project requires a supplement or Specific Project Information page, enter the needed information. Supplement or Specific Project Information pages are in the e-records. Enter your demonstration and community service in the activity log Enter all of your expenses for your project and put a value on your finished project if applicable Evaluate how you did Provide pictures of you working on your project Create a good story Place record and required items in a sturdy binder BACK UP YOUR 4-H E-RECORDS IF DOING THEM ON THE COMPUTER!!! Manuals and Records Update If you have not received your manuals for projects, contact your club leader first as they received packets to distribute at the meetings. When you receive manuals/records, don t set aside until right before Fair. Take time to read the manual NOW and the records to see what you need to do. Most projects require activities to be completed over a period of several months. You want to do more than just the one thing for your exhibit. If you are uncertain of the exhibit requirement, check out this link: http://www.colorado4h.org/project_resources/statefairexhibitreq.pdf. If you still have questions call the Extension Office so one of the Extension Agents can help you with information. In most projects, there are specific skills to learn and complete for the exhibit. There is often confusion about whether a member turns in their Manual or their Record Book. All projects require a record book but not all require the use of the manual; the manual, in most cases, serves as a learning guide for the completion of the project. Record books (E-records) are available online at http://colorado4h.org/project_resources/erecords/index.php. Some Record Books require pieces from the manual and this information can be found looking at the exhibit scoresheets at http://colorado4h.org/events_opportunities/state_fair/score_sheets/index.php. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact Aimee at 970-542-3542. Display Boards and Record Covers The Extension Office has display boards (show boards) for $5 and green record book covers for $3.50 available. 6

PLAN NOW - Demonstration Contest & Creative Cooks The 2017 4-H Demonstration Contest and Creative Cooks Contest will be Thursday afternoon, August 3 rd. This worked well with the schedule and avoided conflicts for youth showing rabbits or poultry on Friday. These events will be held following the 4-H Dog Show, tentatively starting mid-afternoon. We will open the Event Center following Creative Cooks awards so families can see results from Interview Judging August 3 rd. If your club would like a presentation on either contest for a club meeting, Call for details and to set a date: Janice (542-3545) or Jennifer (542-3544.) Top demonstrators (team & individuals) in each age category can receive an opportunity to compete at the Colorado State Fair. Don t miss this opportunity. 2017 Concession Stand Food safety training for 2017 concession stand will be similar to previous years. Each club needs to have all members (8-18 yrs) and parents complete the food safety quiz. This will be an open book quiz. We would like each club to take time to go over food safety booklets at a club meeting. The test is completed on paper. It should be completed during club meetings and returned to the Extension Office for review. We feel this will be a great learning experience to all and will be helpful to members who are older as they apply for jobs related to food service. Quizzes need to be completed prior to July 21 st. The concession schedule for the Morgan County Fair was emailed to all 4-H Club leaders, on March 30. The schedule is based on the number of members in your club and projects enrolled (to try to avoid conflicts with livestock exhibit times). Because of changes in number of members in a club as well as changes in when the Concession Stands will be open in 2017, there will be some adjustment of hours working and day that clubs were scheduled to work. Exhibit Check-Out Exhibit check-out is from 8:30-10:30 pm on Wednesday, August 9 and on Thursday, August 10, prior to 9 am. NO EXHIBIT will be released prior to this time. Fair Management and Extension Staff are NOT RESPONSIBLE for exhibits left after 10:00 am on Thursday, August 10. If you are unable to pick up your exhibit at this time you are responsible for finding another party to pick it up for you. All exhibits must be checked out with the superintendent in charge. WILD WEST CARNIVAL WEDNESDAY AUGUST 3, 2016 8:00 9:30 PM 4-H BUILDING At last year s fair over 80 kids and their families enjoyed the Wild West Carnival. At your June meeting ask for volunteers (at least 1 adult please) to provide MAN-POWER to run the many games at the carnival. If you volunteer to help with the carnival, your club will receive a cash rebate for participating. Last year two clubs shared cash rebates totaling $200! REMEMBER all games are provided and any 4-H member who helps with the carnival for at least ONE HOUR, can get a 1/2 Price Coupon to attend the 4-H Dance. Questions call Annette Lebsock 542-3136 or 380-0777. 7

Family & Consumer Project Exhibit Requirements If you haven t already started on your fair project exhibit, it s time to get serious about it. While some project exhibits may not take as long as others, it is important you know what is expected so you ll be ready for Interview Judging. While complete exhibit requirements will be in the 2017 Morgan County Fair Book, it will not be available until mid-june. If your project exhibit and record book requires additional activities, you ll need to have plenty of time to get all completed. They can show others what they made by being in the 4-H Fashion Revue on Monday, July 31. There will be a small registration fee to cover supplies. Creative Cooks Thursday, August 3 rd Event Center, Brush Fairgrounds Cloverbuds will fix their favorite no-bake/no-cook snack and participate in 4-H Creative Cooks. This is a fun way to share your favorite snack and learn more about other 4-H activities. 9

Cake Decorating Boards One exhibit requirement for Cake Decorating is the board for the cake MUST be a solid, sturdy board which is cut in the same shape as the cake. A typical cardboard cake board is not sturdy enough for fair exhibits and it can be difficult to get recycled cardboard which is thick enough. We recommend using 1/4 inch thick solid masonite board. These can be obtained at a hardware store or lumber yard. Yuma County Cake Show June 6, 2016 Location: Yuma County Fairgrounds Concession Building, Yuma If you want more on Cake Decorating, the Yuma County Cake Show is another opportunity to improve your cake decorating skills. There will be a workshop open to youth and adults. You can also enter a cake you might use for your fair exhibit and have it evaluated. Yuma County is finalizing details - watch for more information or call Jennifer with questions (542-3544). MARK THESE FAIR DATES Here are the tentative dates for events related to the General and Family and Consumer Projects. Fashion Revue - Monday, July 31 st Judging 1-4 pm Public Revue at 6 pm Creative Cooks Thursday, August 3 rd at 3 pm Demonstration Contest - Thursday, August 3 rd Will begin shortly after Creative Cooks is completed (approx. 6 pm) Cake Decorating Contest- Monday, August 7 th at 1 pm The Fashion Revue Committee Needs You! Are you the person people come to when they need fashion advice? Do you like to think outside the box and create fun events for your friends? Are you enrolled as a Clothing project or a Heritage Arts project leader? If this sounds like you, Morgan County 4-H needs you for the Fashion Revue! Fashion Revue committee members create the theme for the Fashion Revue, design and organize the decorations, and help run the Fashion Revue itself. The time commitment is small. The committee meets 2-3 times before the Fashion Revue and then works the Fashion Revue workshop and the Fashion Revue contest. Bring your ideas and join us for fashionable fun! Thanks to all of our county's FFA Chapters, FFA Advisors, FFA members (many who are also 4-H members) who helped with eight days of youth safety programs reaching about 1350 Morgan County youth with safety information. The program would not be possible without their help! Thanks also to our community partners who provided safety workshops: Fort Morgan Fire Department, Jackson Lake Park Rangers, Brush Recreation Department, Morgan County Ambulance, Morgan County REA, Morgan County Health Department, and Colorado Operation Lifesaver. We appreciate the support of Wickham Tractor who provided a tractor, ATV and ATV training for FFA members. We appreciate the Morgan County Schools who welcomed us into their classrooms and facilities. Our goal is that youth and their families will be safer. The safety program began in 1993, when two Wiggins farmers lost their lives because of tractor accidents. We felt that by teaching youth safety information we could impact safety in our county. 14
