Clover Crews News HOWARD COUNTY 4-H NEWSLETTER It s Poultry Chain Time! Poultry Chain ordering is available on 4HOnline. This year the chicks will be Hyline Browns. These brown egg producers are large bodied, docile birds. The fee is $25 per participant. Each order will receive up to 20 birds. The males are.50 each. Orders are due on 4HOnline by March 3. FEBRUARY 2017 Attention- There is a required training on poultry husbandry and biosecurity for all Poultry Chain participants. You must pre-register for this training. The date for this training is March 7, 6pm, at the EH Center or at the Langley Gym, March 8, 10am. https://cdnca2.purechat.com/app/content/images/ StockWidgetImages/animals/Baby-Chicks.png 4-H Volunteer Conference The Arkansas 4-H Adult Leaders' Association will be hosting the 2017 4-H Parent and Volunteer Spring Conference at the C. A. Vines Arkansas 4-H Center on February 24 and 25. This year s theme will be "Back to 4-H Basics". The Association will offer workshops in general leader training, social media, chaperoning and overnight trips, and hunting skills. There are opportunities at this Conference for volunteers to receive three training credits. A tour of the 4-H Center will also be available. The Conference is open to leaders, parents and 4-H youth. Fulltime registration is $80 and one-day registration is $45 (either day). Registration ends February 15. Call the office if you would like an application and agenda. 870-845-7517. Livestock Leadership Academy The Livestock Leadership Academy will be held March 23-25 at the 4- H Center in Ferndale. It is limited to senior members ages 14-19. The focus will be on leadership development, advocacy, etiquette, a tour, a career panel, and more. The cost is $85 per participant. Registration is due on 4HOnline by March 2. Page 2 Clover Crews News Walk Across Arkansas The Spring Walk Across Arkansas will kick off on Sunday, February 26 through April 22. This 8 week program is designed to encourage people to get out and exercise! Participants count the minutes they spend exercising, whether it is walking, playing basketball, baseball, softball or just playing in the yard with your family. The goal is to get up and get active! This year, let s have a little friendly competition between 4-H Clubs. All you have to do is register your club at www.uaex.edu/walk, elect someone to be the team leader, start exercising and report your minutes to the team leader who will enter everyone s minutes. At the end of the program, the winner will be determined by whichever club exercises the most! Clubs can register now at www.uaex.edu/walk. Call the office if you have any questions! Volunteers are needed to help serve food and greet visitors at Razorback Basketball Tickets The Arkansas Razorbacks are pleased to offer a great day of basketball action at a discounted rate for all Arkansas 4-H members, family, and friends. The game is Saturday, March 4 at 1pm and will be the Arkansas Razorbacks vs. the Area 3 Cattlemen s Conference. This event is at the Howard County Fairgrounds on March 14. Babysitting Basics Workshop Soon! Do you want to make extra money this summer? Do you have younger brothers and sisters or cousins that you babysit sometimes? If so, you will want to participate in the Babysitting Basics Workshop scheduled for Monday, March 20 and Tuesday, March 21. Times will be 1pm to 4pm on Monday and 9am to 3pm on Tuesday. This two-day workshop will prepare you for a job as a babysitter. Participants will learn basic child care, snacks children will like, games and activities to do with the children you babysit, safety, plus much more. A $10.00 registration fee will be charged to cover program supplies. A light lunch will be prepared by the participants on Tuesday. This workshop is designed for youth ages 11-16 who have an interest in babysitting. If you are interested in participating in Babysitting Basics, you must pre -register at the Extension Office by calling 870-845-7517. Register by March 13.
Howard County 4-H Newsletter Page 3 Quad County Camp Plans are currently underway for the 2017 Quad County Camp. The camp will be held at the Timber Ridge Lodge in Amity on June 21-23. Due to rising costs, the camp registration fee will be $75 this year. This year s theme will focus on environmental issues. There are a lot of fun activities being planned: archery, dissecting owl pellets, team building, plus much more! Camp is a chance for you to make and renew friendships. This year Pike County will be joining us. There will be a contest to rename camp. Be thinking of a creative new name for this camp. More information to come! Mark your calendar! 4-H Chef s Camp - A Culinary Experience 4-H members will have the unique opportunity to learn and improve their cooking skills this summer at a camp designed especially for them. The camp will be held each day June 27-June 30 in Ashdown at the Culinary Lab on the campus of Cossatot. Youth from six counties, Howard, Little River, Sevier, Miller, Pike and Hempstead will participate. Each day, campers will learn cooking skills that will allow them to prepare meals at home for family and friends. The camp will be a lot of fun! Not only will you meet and build friendships with youth from other counties, campers will receive their own step-by-step cookbook, cooking utensils, apron, plus much more! All supplies will be provided! The camp will cost $125 per person. Registration will be due on May 25. A $50 deposit will be due when you sign up. Due to the nature of the camp and working one -on-one with youth, only four youth from each county will be allowed to participate. This camp is for youth ages 12-15. I encourage you to register early in order to reserve your spot - first come, first serve! This workshop will be open to the public, if needed. The camp will start at 9am each morning and end by 3pm. Lunch will be prepared by the campers each day. You are welcome to ride with Mrs. Jean each day. For more information, contact the Howard County Extension Office at 870-845-7517. This month s spotlight: The Teen Star Program The Arkansas 4-H Teen Star Program is a recognition program for outstanding achievement in the areas of 4-H projects and activities, leadership, and community service. You must be 15 years old to apply for Teen Star recognition. Teen Star is a great recognition that you can use in your journal and scholarship applications! You must receive Teen Star recognition to apply for Ambassador. You must be an Ambassador to run for State Officer! Apply on 4HOnline by March 15. If you have questions, please come by the office. University of Arkansas Show Camp This year s U of A Show Camp will be held June 26-28. Swine, sheep, and goats will be there June 26-27 and the cost is $175 per person. Cattle will be there June 26-28 and the cost will be $275 per person. Participants must bring their own animal and while there, they ll learn to groom, fit, and show. Nutrition selection will also be a topic of study. There will be a fitting and showmanship contest with awards at the end of camp. This camp is located at the Washington County Fairgrounds and the participants will stay in the dorms on the U of A campus. 4-H members 9-19 are eligible for this camp.
