As friends and fellow LIYC members, I know we will be there with support and comfort for Rodman s loving wife Karen Bistrin and his brother and sister-in-law, Brian and Julie Duncan. While we may no longer be blessed by his physical presence, we all have many wonderful memories of Rodman that will live on forever. Associated with the recent gatherings honoring Rodman, I was fortunate to meet with some of Rodman s family and close friends. I now know so much more about Rodman and the tremendous legacy and impact of his life on both professional and personal levels. Rodman was our Second Commodore in 1979 and we can thank him for making the Lopez Island Yacht Club what it is today through his many years of service and participation. He will be sorely missed but never forgotten. Moving forward, we have the traditional Clam Fest Saturday, June 1st at Flat Point. Your boat doesn t have to be ready for this one, so Let s Go! You won t want to miss Rear Commodore Doug Cram s clam chowder and the North (or South?) Cruise planning. Then on June 15th there is a Sailing Race to Friday Harbor and back. And I have to mention the self-proclaimed highlight of the whole year, The Commodore s Cruise to Port Browning on June 21-23. I know you won t want to miss this one! Check the Newsline for more information. Also, don t forget to goto our website for more upcoming cruises and activities as well as a plethora of other helpful tidbits brought to you by our Web Wench, Judy Welker. Finally we are still looking for a yacht club volunteer to help with the July 4th Parade tradition. We can do it simply...or elaborately...we just need to be there. Duane

FIRST ANNUAL RODMAN DUNCAN MEMORIAL SAILBOAT RACE Lopez Island Yacht Club celebrates its 35th birthday this year. And, as part of the festivities, LIYC will hold the first annual Rodman Duncan Memorial Sailboat Race on June 15th. Rodman was one of LIYC s Founding Members all sailors back in 1978. (This staff photo shows 3 of the founding members: from right to left, Robina Bant, LIYC s first Commodore, Rodman, LIYC s second Commodore and Scott Patrick s wife, Karleen Patrick during a Lopez visit to the general membership meeting in 2009.) One of the club s early events was called the Bar to Bar Race, in which one member of each sailing crew chugged a beer at the Galley, raced to their waiting boat and sailed no motors allowed to Friday Harbor. The winner was the first boat whose crew member finished chugging another beer at Herb s Tavern. Our 2013 race will be similar drink a beer at the Galley, get to their waiting boats, sail around a mark near Shaw Island and return to the Islander for another beer. There will be two classes, Class A and Class B. Class B boats will start at the Galley dock. Class A boats (big boats) start out at the day marker. Each boat does not finish until the beer is finished. There will be no handicap racing just boat to boat. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes for both Class A and Class B. To sign up, email Russ Johnson captainrussj@gmail.com with the name of the skipper and the make of the boat.
