Sooner ApHC Newsletter Sooner Appaloosa Horse Club May, 2003 Inside this issue: Member News 2 President s Corner 2 Sandy Dyer Print Chances Available at June Show 2 Upcoming Local Events 3 Adam Chronister Service Award Presented at April Show 3 April 6 Show Sponsors 3 Miss Indian Rodeo America, in Americana Futurity Post Parade Tahnee Harjo, the reigning Miss Indian Rodeo America, rode Hazachance, 9-year-old Appaloosa gelding owned by Tanner Chronister and Jim Chronister, in the Americana Futurity post parade April 12th at Fair Meadows race track. ApHC photographer Melinda Anderson was there to get pictures of Tahnee and Chance, as well as of the Appaloosas racing. It was Tahnee s first time to ride in her ceremonial costume she looked awesome. Kids at the races were impressed; they were sure she was a princess or a queen. This event helped promote our Club and our breed. I met several of the Appaloosa race horse owners, who seemed pleased at the efforts to make their race even more special. I look forward to seeing photos of Tahnee and Chance in the Journal. They made a good looking pair. I hear from Jim that Tanner is telling everyone that Chance is a cover boy. Several people made major contributions to the success of Tahnee s ride. Thanks to Victoria Ennis for putting everything in motion for our representation in the post parade. Also, for her on-going coordination efforts. Thanks to Debbie Letham for putting us in touch with Tahnee. And many thanks to the Chronisters, Chance s owners, and Kris Worth who is currently riding him for making him available for Tahnee to ride. And, of course, thanks to Tahnee for giving those in attendance a beautiful picture of the Appaloosa and its history. I also want to thank my friend Mary Wetzel from the Bartlesville area for the generous loan of costumes for additional riders to wear. As chauffeur and groom for Chance, I really had a good time. A beautiful day, meeting Tahnee, her mother, and others who love the Appaloosa, getting to talk with them about these wonderful horses... I even got to ride Chance and check that he would have no problem with Tahnee s regalia. On-line Show Entry Available! In addition to standard entry at the show, we have a new entry option for our June 7th show on-line entry via HorseSportsWorld.com. HorseSportsWorld.com is a powerful online registration service that allows you to register online for equestrian events. There is nothing to install - you access the HorseSportsWorld.com online registration software over the Internet from any web browser. You can register 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Imagine getting to the show and getting ready to show without the added stress of having to fill out your entries at the same time. Page 2 Sooner ApHC Newsletter New Arrivals Sherri and George Basehoar announce the birth of Bandit, a black and white leopard colt out of their stud Frankie on April 25, 2003. Member News Angie Smith would like to introduce Samantha's new ride- Cherokee, a paint mare that is old enough to vote and well suited for Samantha. We had a chance to see this new team at the April 6th show. They really seem to click together and are off to a nice start. Leslie Chapman wants to reintroduce her stallion Zee Ima Cowboy Shado, ApHC# 3541862. He was born March 2, 1995. His sire is C Ima Shado Two from Castle Hills Appaloosas, Donnie and Mary Clark from Missouri. Cowboy has 7-8 offspring that are being ridden and shown. Foals have been 80% black and 100% characteristics. At the horsefest in Claremore in 2001, out of 42 horses in the most colorful halter class, Cowboy placed 6th and placed 2nd out of 7 in the aged stallion class. He s received lots of compliments on his disposition, color, and conformation. For more information and to see Cowboy, contact Chapman Versatility Horses, Leslie Chapman at appy2us@yahoo.com. Congratulations to David Marshall and his Adair FFA teammates for placing 3rd in the State Quiz Bowl. David is the son of Leslie Chapman. Jim Chronister reports that Best Hazzard, their two-year old filly, received two 3rd places, one 4th place and one 5th place out of a class of 8 in Hunter in Hand Mares. Several of our members have new babies this year. Check out the photos I ve been receiving. 2003 has been a spotted spring! President s Corner Wendy Banks announced the birth of this lovely filly on March 25, 2003. IMA Cool Flyer s dad is Cool Counsel; mom is Katy Fler. Wrong kind of spots, but she is a beautiful baby. Rodger Scott s mare Susie had this lovely filly on Tuesday, April 22. If she s like her big sister, her color will come on in her second year. April has been a busy month for our Club. The April show went from the from the snow show when scheduled in March to the storm show. The storms didn t hit in Tulsa until about 8:00 a.m., but were active in the OKC and Missouri areas much earlier. In spite of nature s challenges, we had truly intrepid exhibitors and a wonderful turn out of volunteers. We have several new members, had a good time, learned a lot, so in spite of the negatives, I feel good about the show. The next week on April 12th, the Club participated in the Americana Futurity post parade, thanks to the efforts of a number of people (see article on page 1). Talked to the ApHC photographer Club will get a side bar in the Journal s article on the Futurity. Thanks to the Club fund raising efforts and our exhibitors, we covered the day s expenses, although not the full cost of the show. With that said, it s even more important that we continue our fund raising efforts heading into the Summer show. It s truly a case of many hands make light work. We had a number of Walk/Trot competitors at the April show. June Show Class Additions: Note that we ve added more walk/trot classes for the June show, and high point awards for All-Breeds and ApHC Walk/ Trot. Exhibitors. We ve also added Get of Sire and Produce of Dam classes, at the request of our members. Work hard, Play hard. In addition to working hard to promote the Appaloosa, we need to take time to enjoy our horses and each other, so the Club plans to get together for trail ride, play days, etc. over the next several months. Plan to join us for a trail ride at Blue Cove Creek in June. Carol "Happiness is not a state to arrive at, but rather, a manner of traveling. (Hopefully on the back of a horse.)"...author Unknown Sandy Dyer Print Chances Available at June Show Sandy Dyer was an Oklahoma artist from Oolagah. Jim and Donna Chronister attended an estate sale recently where a number of her works were sold. They purchased a 14 x20 pen and ink signed and numbered print of a calf roper called Smooth Running. Jim and Donna plan to have the print framed, then donate the print to the Club. Chances to win the print will be sold from now until the our annual meeting for $1. All proceeds from the print will go to the Sooner ApHC general fund. Contact Donna Chronister, 918-825-4487 for more information on the print.

Adam Chronister Service Award Presented at April Show The Adam Chronister Service Award for 2002 was presented to Randy Hazelwood at the April show in Tulsa. This award is presented to an individual who has worked to promote the best interests of the Appaloosa and the Sooner ApHC. In 2001, the Club presented the first Adam Chronister service award to Tiffany George. When we selected the 2002 award winner, we decided to make this a traveling award. Randy was presented with an award plaque which contains Tiffany s name for 2001 and his for 2002. Next year, the plaque will go to the 2003 award winner whose name will join theirs. Randy also received a certificate which he ll be able to keep. April 6 Show Sponsors Thanks to our show sponsors. Their support is greatly appreciated. With the beginning of 2003, it s time to renew your membership, if you haven't already done so. There is a revised membership form attached to this newsletter. Fill out & return to Cathey Hazelwood. Make copies and share! Invite a friend to join. Club Sponsors Please support our Club sponsors whenever you get a chance. We really appreciate their support and want to let them know it. General Meeting Minutes April 27, 2003 Location: Microtel Hotel, Tulsa, Oklahoma Time: 3:00 p.m. Present: Carol & Paul Johnson, Cathey Hazelwood, Billy M. Walker, Walter Walker, Angie Evans, Jim & Donna Chronister The meeting was called to order at 3:10 p.m. Financial Report Cathey Hazelwood presented the Financial Reports for the months of February April 2003. Copies of the financial reports and show financial reports were distributed during the meeting. The club currently has $637.42 in the checking account. Show financial results include income of $475 in sponsorships and $1363 in exhibitor payments for a total income of $1838.00. Total expenses were $2805.13, which leave us with a net loss of ($967.13). Of the $2805.13 in expenses, $1534.93 is expenses not yet reimbursed to Carol Johnson ($1048.29), Sherri Basehoar ($181.87) and Cathey Hazelwood ($304.77). It was noted that Sherri Basehoar has indicated her willingness to donate her unreimbursed money ($181.87) to the club in exchange for a sponsorship of their farm announced during the June show. Jim Chronister made a motion to make the unpaid expenses ($1534.93) a part of the club s accounts receivable. Walter Walker seconded the motion and it was passed unanimously. April 2003 Horse Show Results Carol has sent thank you notes to exhibitors and sponsors. It appears that Brenna Brawner is the only one who qualified for a High Point award. June 7, 2003 Show Preparation A draft of the June 2003 showbill was reviewed. It was recommended that a non- Appaloosa class be added, get a sire/produce of dam. We have the North Arena at the Tulsa Expo for the June show. Carol is working with Horse Sports World to have online entry available for the June show. We need 24 Appaloosas to make the show count for points. Walter will make calls to make sure we meet that number. Angie Evans will get Sharon Martin s (Appy owner) phone number to Walter. Carol said that Amy Clark Kinsch intends to make the show. Carol will get information to the Mayes County 4H and Tulsa County Extension Office regarding the show so they can disperse to club members. Jim will be the announcer for the June show. He stated that he needs a class sheet for himself and one is needed for the gatekeeper. It was clarified that sponsorship money is an advertising expense for a business and not a donation. Everyone needs to be accountable for getting sponsorships and should explain the benefits they will receive when sponsoring a class/banner, including the announcement of business/individual name at the show and their name/logo placed on our website. Any materials or gift certificates will be posted in the hospitality booth. Regarding fundraising for the club, Jim and Donna Chronister are donating a piece of western pen and ink artwork by Sandy Dyer. The value when framed will be approximately $200. We will sell $1.00 chances to be drawn at the end of the year. Jim and Donna will take the artwork to the OKC and Carthage shows to sell chances. Billy Walker is donating Curly Bill, a stallion, in order to raise money for the club. Chances are $10 each and the drawing will take place at the June show. Walter will get the pedigree and picture to Carol so she can create a flyer. We need everyone s help to get the flyer posted/circulated. Trailride A trailride was discussed for sometime in June, after the horse show. Dates discussed were either June 15 th or June 22 nd. Other Jim will help work on the futurity. Carol reported on the Americana Futurity race held recently at Fair Meadows. Victoria Ennis had contacted the club about providing horses (Continued on page 5)

Page 5 General Meeting Minutes April 27, 2003 (Continued from page 4) and riders for the post parade. Tahnee Harjo, Miss Indian Rodeo America, rode Tanner Chronister s horse, Chance. A full article will appear in the Appaloosa Journal. Carol believes the event was well received by the race horse people. Tahnee was in full Indian costume. Carol was accountable for transporting Chance to and from the track. THANKS CAROL!
