CO-OP LTD Snow Country Snippets December 2016 Club News Sheet Editor - Meg Brannon Please send items to megbrannon@bigpond.com Welcome to the sixth and final Snow Country Snippets for 2016.. Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year The Snow Country Board wishes all members a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year! Please see at the end of the newsletter some photos from the recent SCSC End of Season party. It was great to see over 100 people celebrating the 2016 season and getting in the festive spirit, Snow Country style Club Member of the Year Get Well Soon Congratulations to David Winfield on being awarded the 2016 Snow Country Club Member of the Year! David s efforts in organising our JDP and Smiggins Bowl programs over the past couple of years have been enormous, making him a very worthy recipient. Well done David and thanks for your contribution to Snow Country! Our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Life Member, JILL WARD, who is undergoing double shoulder replacement surgery in coming weeks. Thoughts are with you Jill - and also Laurie, who we think may be on a forced diet for a number of weeks! Congratulations Congratulations to Stuart (son of long time member Robyne) and Kitty Waller who were recently married in Thailand - wishing you years of happiness together! 1

Junior Development Program - Expressions of Interest for 2017 The 2017 JDP will run between July 9 and July 12 inclusive. This year the program will run in the second week of the school holidays and like last year there will be a minimum skier ability restriction (learn to ski will not be offered). All applicants must be skiing with poles and be able to make a turn with their skis parallel to be accepted (i.e. participants need to be a Level 4 skier or above). In addition to this all applicants are required to participate in Alpine and cross country disciplines. The program will continue to fully subsidised by the club for children who are full financial members, and there will be a small $100 charge for non-member children of financial members. Attached to this newsletter are the 2017 JDP Application Forms. Please have a read and send the forms back to if interested in participating. We are again anticipating a large number of applicants this year so please get your forms in before the closing date of February 12, 2017. The Board will then notify successful applicants of the acceptance and accommodation booking information. Annual Subscriptions - 2017 Member subscriptions will be issued to members in January for payment in February 2017. This years subscriptions will be comprised of : - any outstanding subscriptions or fees from 2016 - the 2017 Subscriptions and Admin Payments (unchanged from the previous year) - the Smiggins Refurbishment Project Building Levy ($550 for ordinary senior members 24 year and over, and $275 for honorary members) Subscriptions will be emailed where possible and sent via mail if we do not have an email on file - if you ve recently changed your email address please advise David Carr, Registrar. Smiggins News Great to report that Kim and Mike, our Smiggins Lodge Managers, will be returning to Smiggins Lodge again next season. They have made a great transition to Snow Country this year - the food is good and the Lodge has never looked cleaner - we look forward to having them on board again in 2017. 2

Saturday the 17 th of September saw the running of the 52nd Smiggins Bowl. The Alpine and Snowboard course was held on the front valley, while the Cross Country was on a track put together at the Smiggins ski area. The weather was cooler than it has been in previous years but T-shirts were still the order of the day by the time the cross country started. As is the normal process the bowl teams raced first with 2 runs down a slalom course and then 2 runs down the GS course. The Snow Country team of John Hopkins, Adam Moate, Michael Moate and David Winfield did us proud taking out the alpine team event. John Hopkins was the fastest skier overall winning the slalom and finishing 3 rd in the GS. John continues to dominate his younger rivals! It wasn t only the Bowl men that did Snow Country proud this year with their win in the Alpine event, our Juniors and Vets teams both had great days winning their shield events. Our Juniors won the overall shield which was a combination of Alpine, Cross Country and Snowboarding. In these events the fastest 3 skiers from each club in each event combine their times to find the winner. In the junior events Snow Country had their largest representation ever (35 children) which was a fantastic effort. Our Junior development program was a great success this year and the results showed in the racing. Our youngest skier was Clarissa Winfield at the bright old age of 4 years old. With 35 Junior skiers this year including 14 Under 10 s our future is looking great. It will be great to see some of these younger skiers coming through and relieve some of the older blokes racing in our bowl team!! Special mention to the following skiers after placing in the Bowl or Shield events: Joe Livissianos 2 rd place U9 Male GS Noah Winfield 3 rd place U9 Male GS Despite having only just turned 6!! Amelia Bond 2 nd place U13 female GS, Mac Livissianos 2 rd place U13 male GS Kirra Budd 3 rd place U13 female Snowboard Indya Ward - 1 st U9 female Snowboard (2 nd overall) Declan Budd 2 nd U9 male Snowboard, 3 rd U9 Cross Country Ella McFadden 1 st U13 female Cross Country Alex McFadden 2 nd U13 male Cross Country In the adult categories the following people obtained results for Snow Country: John Hopkins 1 st overall alpine bowl, 1 st overall mens slalom, 3 nd overall mens GS Bowl Sally Hopkins 2nd overall open womens GS Janet Fabbri 1 st overall Female veterans GS Rob McFadden 3rd overall Mens Snowboard GS David Winfield 2 nd overall Open Bowl Cross Country The day continued after the alpine events with the cross country in the afternoon. The weather was warm with a nice breeze and a difficult course was made around the Smiggins resort including a climb up the Jbar and an even trickier descent back down it! Snow country had 19 competitors which was encouraging to see. Our bowl 4

team which consisted of David Winfield, Helene McFadden, Janet Fabbri and Peter Bond finished 3 rd with David finishing 2 nd overall and Helene finishing 6 th overall and first overall female. Fantastic effort by Helene!! The day also acted as our Snow Country Club Championships. These were for all junior categories and we also had an adult cross country category. The results were: Cross Country: U9: Declan Budd 1 st, Noah Winfield 2 nd, U13 Male: Alex McFadden 1 st, James Hopkins 2 nd, Cameron Winfield 3 rd U13 Female: Jemma Hopkins 1 st, Amelia Bond 2 nd, Tessa Bond 3 rd U17 Male: Liam Filan 1 st, James Wray 2 nd U17 Female: Ella McFadden, Ella Moate, Melanie Filan Snowboard: Kirra Burke 1 st, Rhianna Burke 2 nd, James Wray 3 rd (Special mention in this one to Indya Ward and Declan Budd who are still only U9 s!!) Alpine: U10: Joe Livissianos 1 st, Noah Winfield 2 nd, Jemma Hopkins 3 rd U13: Mac Livissianos 1 st, James Hopkins 2 nd, Cameron Winfield 3 rd U15: Ella Moate 1 st, Luca Gibbs 2 nd, Melanie Filan 3 rd U18: Kirra Burke 1 st, Rhianna Burke 2 nd, James Wray 3 rd Special Awards: Ced Pepper Trophy: Joe Livissianos Willi Rieder Trophy: Mac Livissianos Stanton Trophy: Ella Moate Harry Green Trophy: James Wray Club Captain Snowboard Trophy: James Wray Walter Langsam XC Cup: Alex McFadden Bryan Coombes & Stig Virtanen XC Encouragement award: Noah Winfield for being the youngest competitor in cross country and his sheer determination to chase his mate Declan Budd who was just in front of him! Jim Hopkins Encouragement Shield: Clarissa Winfield for being Snow Country s newest and youngest competitor! Volunteers: As always, events like this don t happen without the volunteers so special thanks to Kate Bond for putting together our schedule for the volunteers. Thanks to everyone who stepped up and helped out with volunteering. Mike and Kim are our new lodge managers at Smiggins and they had a baptism of fire with their first Smiggins Bowl. Feeding the 70 odd people that came back to the lodge for dinner was a mammoth effort so a special thanks to them for their super efforts on the day. Summary: Overall the day was a great success, everyone had a lot of fun and no one got hurt despite a few good crashes. Our Bowl team, Vets and Juniors did us proud winning their bowl events and our juniors also improved on last year. Thanks to everyone for their participation this season and I look forward to an even bigger and better year next year! 5
