September 2017 A Note From Mrs. Szmed Dear MOSS Families, Looking forward to seeing all our families on Wednesday, September 27 th for the MOSS Open House from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Every classroom will have a vast display of student work. Many prospective families will also be visiting that evening to explore our academic and spiritual program. If you know of any family who might be interested, please reach out to them and invite them to come for a visit. All families should have received an Open House postcard by now, reminding you about the event. Thanks to Elisa Capozoli for spearheading the postcard creation and community mailing. The MOSS Marathon will take place on Friday, October 6 th. Please see the additional information included in this newsletter. Please consider volunteering or joining us for a delicious picnic lunch prepared by Chef Amy. Many exciting things are happening at MOSS: The First Lego Challenge Team (Gr. 6-8) has begun preparing for competitions. Students have begun experiencing the Smart Lab and are loving it. The 8 th grade class has begun visiting Catholic High Schools to experience what each has to offer. Tiny Disciples program, a cooperative playgroup for families with young children (birth to age 5), has started meeting on Wednesdays. Grades 2-8 are engaged in our new Project-Based Learning Art Program authored by Laurie German. The Girls Basketball season kicked off this past Saturday. The 8 th grade students will be representing MOSS at the Diocesan Back to School Mass with Bishop Malesic at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral on Oct. 3. Several classes will be taking Fall field trips to farms in the next few weeks. I hope you are as excited as I am about what is happening at our school. Our school has an excellent future, thank you for your commitment to Catholic education. Please be a positive Mother of Sorrows School supporter so we can educate many children for years to come. We are hoping to break our previous fundraising record and WE NEED YOUR HELP! Ways You Can Help: (please see the attached forms for additional information) Be a Race Day Sponsor: We are looking for Corporate Sponsors to appear on the back of our school marathon shirts. Cost is $150 and your business will be listed on our school webpage, Facebook page and in the Mother of Sorrows church bulletin. Be a Parent Volunteer: We are looking for Parent Volunteers to make this day a huge success. Parent Volunteers will help supervise students, refill water bottles and volunteer during lunch time. You can volunteer for part of the day or the entire day! Help Your Child Raise Money: Help your student fill up his or her pledge sheet! You can make a flat donation or make a pledge based on how many miles they walk. This year the homeroom with the most pledges will win a pizza party! A HUGE THANK YOU to Mrs. Beer for organizing the Marathon shirts and Mrs. Capozoli for updating and organizing all of the Marathon Information!

We stock Giant Eagle, Shop N Save, Sheetz, Kohl's, Walmart/Sam's Club and many more! A Note from Mr. Szirmae To the family of Mother of Sorrows, It is with a heavy heart that I must say goodbye to Mother of Sorrows School. In the fall I will be teaching within the Pittsburgh Public school system. It should be said that no matter where my career takes me I will always remember my roots. The past five years have been filled with amazing experiences. There is no way I can fit all five years into one farewell, so I will simply have to rely on all the memories we have created here together. To the staff thank you for your advice, leadership and friendship. To the families thank you for your patience, your support and your enthusiasm. To the students you were my very first class! You should know that I will always remember you. Keep singing! Continue playing your instruments! Practice (yeah, even when you don t want to). But most importantly keep making music. Thank you for everything, MOSS ~ Mr. Szirmae Thank you for the kind words, Mr. Szirmae! You will be greatly missed by all the students, teachers and families. We wish you the best of luck!

Cowboys and Cash Fundraiser Our Cowboys & Cash Fundraiser was held on September 9th. It was a ton of fun and raised $11,050. Thank you to the many volunteers who put together this amazing event. We'd also like to thank everyone who purchased tickets and/or donated items. We appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you at upcoming MOSS events!
