Shooting Sports is the #1 program activity in Scouting It is often cited as one of the biggest draws for prospective Scouts Teaches Responsibility Sportsmanship Self-Discipline, Control, Reliance Logic Concentration Safe Habits and Attitudes

Cub Scout Shooting Sports Cub Scout Shooting Sports programs may be conducted ONLY at Council or District level. Archery, BB Gun Shooting, and Slingshot Shooting are restricted to Cub Scout Day Camps, Cub Scout/Webelos Scout Resident Camps, Council-managed Family Camps, or to Council activities where there are properly trained supervisors and all standards are enforced. Only Council supplied and approved equipment may be used at Cub Scout events Event equipment must meet BSA Standards

Cub Scouts Shooting Sports BSA BB Gun Range Master Eighteen years of age or older and trained by a National Camping School shooting sports director OR National Rifle Association rifle instructor, OR NRA/USA Shooting/CMP certified rifle coach ü Is in charge of the firing line at any time it is in operation ü must be renewed every two years ü A currently certified NRA rifle instructor or NRA/USA Shooting/CMP certified rifle coach is qualified to serve as a BB range master.

Cub Scouts Shooting Sports BSA Archery Range Master Eighteen years of age or older and trained by a National Camping School shooting sports director OR USA Archery/NFAA (National Field Archery Association) Level archery instructor ü Required to set up and operate a safe archery range for a Cub Scout or Boy Scout archery program ü Is in charge of the firing line at any time it is in operation ü Must be renewed every two years, ü A currently certified USA Archery/NFAA basic archery instructor or National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) basic archery instructor may serve as the archery range master for Cub Scout archery activities.

Cub Scouts Shooting Sports Equipment BB Guns ü Only a smoothbore, spring-type air gun propelling a coated steel ball projectile commonly known as a BB may be used. Archery bows ü light-draw-weight (15- to 20-pound), 54-inch, takedown, recurve bow is recommended ü The bow should be equipped with an arrow, a proper-length, well-served, 10-strand string, with a properly placed nock locator. ü Safety Equipment Safety Glasses Finger and arm protection for archery Ranges - BB Gun and Archery Ranges are created, configured, operated, and controlled by the Lead Range Master per BSA requirements

Cub Scout Shooting Sports Opportunities Cub Scout Shooting Sports Awards. Cub Scout Shooting Sports Award Pins

Cub Scout Shooting Sports Awards & Pins 1.) Rank Level Patch Choose a discipline (Archery, BB Gun or Slingshot. Complete the Level 1 requirements for that discipline. 2.) Discipline Device Pin Complete the Level 2 requirements for the same discipline in which the patch was earned. 3.) Additional Discipline Devices Earn pins for the remaining disciplines by completing the Level 1 and Level 2 requirements in those disciplines. (NOTE: Both Level 1 and Level 2 requirements must be completed for each successive discipline.

Venturing Shooting Sports Venturing Ranger Award The Ranger Award consist of completing 8 core requirements and 4 separate electives. There are 18 electives. Elective 24 is Shooting Sports. To complete this elective, the Venture Scout must: 1.) Show General Knowledge of Shooting Sports A.) Recite, explain, and demonstrate the three primary shooting safety rules B.) Recite and explain the range commands C.) Identify the parts of a pistol, rifle, or bow (whichever one is selected) and explain the function of those parts. D.) If air pistol, air rifle, muzzle-loading rifle, pistol, or small bore rifle is chosen as shooting discipline, they must explain how minute of angle is used to zero the airgun or firearm. E.) If muzzle-loading rifle is chosen as shooting discipline, they must recite the proper steps for loading a muzzle-loading rifle and the proper sequence of firing the shot. They must explain each step. F.) If archery is chosen as shooting discipline, they must recite and explain the nine steps to the 10 ring. G.) If shotgun is chosen as shooting discipline, they must explain how to sight a shotgun differently than they would a rifle.

Venturing Shooting Sports Venturing Ranger Award continued 2.) Complete a basic training course and the course of fire for one of the following shooting disciplines. A.) Air Pistol B.) Air Rifle C.) Archery D.) Muzzle-Loading Rifle E.) Pistol F.) Shotgun G.) Small Bore Rifle Each discipline has individual requirements which must be completed. 3.) Make a table top display or presentation about what you learned about shooting sports. Include information on shooting sports in summer and winter Olympics. All sign-offs must be done by a certified instructor/coach

Venturing Shooting Sports Outstanding Achievement Award This award is awarded to a Venture Ranger candidate who completes five of the shooting disciplines within the Shooting Sports Ranger Award Elective. Air Pistol Air Rifle Archery Muzzle-Loading Rifle Shotgun Pistol Small Bore Rifle

Sea Scout Marksmanship Program This award was implemented as a part of the special activities a Sea Scout can participate in when they are not engaged in their nautical programs. 1.) Sea Scout would begin by selecting a discipline. A.) Rifle B.) Shotgun C.) Pistol 2.) Sea Scout will begin with Basic Shooter requirements 3.) Once Basic Shooter requirements are met, the Sea Scout will be awarded the Sea Scouts Shooting Sports Medal and Basic Bar. 4.) There are 4 bars which are earned based on the level they reach in each discipline Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert. 5.) If Sea Scout shoots all 3 disciplines, they could have a maximum of 3 bars hanging off main medal.

Boy Scouts Rifle & Shotgun Shooting Merit Badge Merit Badge instructors for Rifle and Shotgun Merit Badges MUST be certified Instructors The counselor/instructor MUST: ü Follow the BSA Rifle and Shotgun Shooting merit badge pamphlet ü Follow the NRA FIRST Steps Rifle and Shotgun Orientation Lesson Plans

Planning a Shooting Event Request assistance from Shooting Sports Committee if needed for resources RSO Instructors Private Range Approvals

Rifle and Archery Event Staffing Require a currently NRA certified Rifle Instructor / US Archery/NFAA Archery Instructor AND a currently NRA-certified Range Safety Officer (RSO) (rifle only) Instructor and RSO are separate persons A MINIMUM 1:8 ratio (instructor to active shooter) is mandatory Contact SHAC Shooting Sports Committee for help with events.

Pistol, Shotgun and Muzzle Loading Event Staffing Requires: a currently NRA certified Pistol, Shotgun or Muzzle- Loading Instructor AND a currently NRA-certified Range Safety Officer (RSO). Instructor and RSO are separate persons - A 1:1 ratio (instructor to active shooter) is mandatory - NRA Basic Pistol Instruction (classroom AND range) is mandatory for all Venture Scouts wanting to shoot pistol. MUST have current Venture registration or current dual (troop-crew) registration. Contact SHAC Shooting Sports Committee for help with events.

Where to Shoot Council Property Tellepsen Scout Camp, Bovay Scout Ranch and Camp Brosig All ranges on SHAC properties are approved for shooting activities Some activities may be restricted due to range designs No range pre-approval is required for events on SHAC property Private firearms/ammo only when not provided by SHAC Public / Commercial Ranges The rules and policies of the range must be adhered to If the range does not supply RSOs, the event must do so. NRA Instructors are still required Private Ranges Must be approved by a Chief RSO from the SHAC shooting sports committee using BSA forms Approvals last 2 years

Get Trained Archery Instructor USA Archery/NFAA Level 1 is the minimum training level to qualify as an instructor. Length of course is 8-12 hours of instruction for certification. USA Archery/NFAA Level 2 teaches Basic shooting steps, introduce intermediate shooting steps, safety, range set-up; equipment setup and repair, fitting equipment to an archer, how to teach archery and how to teach a Level 1 Instructor Course. Length of Course: 16 hours

He can teach week days, week evenings, or weekends. For range activities, you will need to arrange range time at a commercial range, or for BSA activities, at the Tellepsen ranges at Bovay Scout Ranch. He can also facilitate arrangements at the Gander Mountain Training Academy in Spring, TX. Training Costs Varies per class. See attached pricing schedule Class Sizes For Classroom events, he prefers to limit class size to 10 people. Range events require a Range Safety Officer, plus one instructor for every 8 students for Rifle, and one instructor per student for Shotgun and Pistol. He can arrange additional Instructors, but lead time is needed.
