2009-10 Peter Belisle Head Coach Connecticut 1995 Fourth Season Head Coach Peter Belisle enters his fourth season and has reached new heights in each of his first three seasons with the Beacons, including last year s run that ended playing in the ECAC East Championship game. Already, Belisle is tied for the most playoff victories by a coach in program history. The UMass Boston mentor s hallmark has been motivating his teams to win the big games, including a road victory over nationally-ranked Middlebury College for the second straight season and a 1-0 overtime road win over nationally-ranked Norwich University to become the first number eight seed to defeat a number one seed in ECAC East Tournament history. He followed that by directing the team to a semifinals win to land the Beacons in the ECAC East championship for the first time in school history. Belisle s second season saw him construct a team that registered the highest win total at UMass Boston in eight campaigns, while winning the school s first playoff game since 2000. Along the way, the Beacons won their first Codfish Bowl championship since 1997, defeated a pair of nationally-ranked teams and received votes in the USCHO.com national poll in two consecutive weeks to end their season. Belisle s team also boasted the first ECAC East Goalie of the Year and saw production from some of the most talented freshmen in the region, including a member of the ECAC East All-Rookie team. Belisle became the program s 11th varsity head coach after spending nine years with Division I University of Connecticut as an assistant coach. The New England Native spent his first year of coaching with College of the Holy Cross, where he helped guide the Crusaders to their first playoff victory in 13 years. He returned to UConn the following season to help guide the program that he was once a part of as a fouryear standout player. Belisle helped direct the Huskies to a 19-16-1 mark in 1999-2000, en-route to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship in 2000 and was behind the bench for UConn s second 20-win season in 1998-99 when it put together a 20-10-4 mark, including an 18-6-4 record in MAAC play. Prior to his joining the coaching ranks, Belisle was a four-year letter winner with the Huskies from 1991-95 as a forward. During his playing tenure at Storrs, UConn posted one of the greatest four-year periods in school-history with a 71-25-12 mark, including four ECAC playoff appearances. He is still the second all-time leading playoff goal scorer in Connecticut ice hockey history and during his junior season, was the recipient of UConn s 7th Player Award. During his career with the Huskies, he tallied 36 goals and 42 assists for a total of 78 points. Belisle s coaching experience is not limited to his collegiate tenure, having instructed and been a coach at several of New England s premier hockey camps as well. He has served as a head instructor at the Connecticut Hockey Experience, the Learn to Skate Program at UConn, Bill Belisle s Hockey School, and the Mount Saint Charles COACHING STAFF Instructional Hockey Program and for the past three summers, Belisle coached at the USA Hockey Team New England Select 14 and Select 15 Player Development Camp. Prior to his collegiate career, Belisle was a part of Mount Saint Charles Academy teams that captured the Rhode Island State championship twice and, during his junior season, the Mounties success wasn t limited to the state level as they were crowned national champions as well. The native of Manville, RI, graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration, management from UConn in 1995 and followed that with a master of arts degree in sport management in 1999 also at the Storrs campus. Belisle currently resides in Cumberland, RI with his wife, Carrie, their two-year old daughter, Madeleine and newborn Norah. COACHING STAFF Ryan McGrath Assistant Coach 2009-10 Greg Schwind Assistant Coach Ryan McGrath comes to UMass Boston with an impressive coaching background as he enters his first season on the Beacons bench. McGrath has a wealth of experience coaching college caliber players, having spent the last four years coaching on the junior hockey circuit, including the previous three seasons with the Portland Junior Pirates. He helped call the shots as the Associate Head Coach of the Pirates Junior A team in the Atlantic Junior Hockey Leauge from 2006-08, before being named the Head Coach for the Junior B squad of the Metropolitan Junior Hockey League last season. Prior to his arrival in Portland, McGrath was an Assistant Coach for the Northern Cyclones of the MJHL for the 2005-06 campaign. The native of Reading, Massachusetts has not been limited to instruction in junior hockey circles. In the spring of 2006 and 2007, McGrath was selected by USA Hockey to coach at the New England Yankee Conference Festival. He also served as the Head Coach for the East Coast Selects 93 s during the Summer AAA season this past summer. A former defenseman, McGrath starred at Reading High School and led the Rockets to a USA Today number 11 national ranking as well as three Middlesex League Championships. McGrath also put together a fine junior hockey career with the Tyngsboro Huskies of the Eastern Junior Hockey League from 1998-2000 and was tabbed a top 10 blueliner by the Red-Line Report. Greg Schwind begins his second season with the UMass Boston coaching staff. He was also an assistant with State University of New York Brockport during the 2007-08 campaign. The former forward spent two years at SUNY-Brockport as a player as well and made an immediate impact for the Golden Eagles, leading them in points and assists on his way to being named team Most Valuable Player for the 2005-06 campaign. He also earned a spot on the State University of New York Athletic Conference All-Academic team and repeated that feat the following year as well. Prior to his time with Brockport, Schwind played two seasons for Morrisville State College, where he was selected a Captain and led the team to the National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship and was named the national tournament MVP. The New York native was also tabbed to the Academic All-American squad. Schwind, a resident of South Boston with his wife, Laurie, is a 2006 graduate of SUNY-Brockport with a degree in mathematics and also holds a masters degree in educationadolescence mathematics. beaconsathletics.com 2009-10 UMass Boston Men s Ice Hockey 3

2009-10 UMass Boston men s ice hockey cemented its reputation as one of the top playoff teams in ECAC East hockey during the Peter Belisle era last season. The Beacons were within a goal of winning their first-ever ECAC East tournament championship and its first-ever NCAA tournament berth, but fell in overtime in the title game. UMass Boston s road was not easy, but became the first number eight seed to defeat a number one when it took down nationally-ranked Norwich University on its own ice. The Beacons weren t finished as they did the same to New England College, before bowing out in the finale. This season UMass Boston can boast something it hasn t had in recent years -- experience. The Beacons return 10 of their top scorers from last season and 22 letterwinners altogether, including 11 players entering either their junior or senior campaign. Among them is UMass Boston s top goalie, arguably the greatest in school history. The Beacons top line is back again for their third season together as well as their top eight scoring forwards. Senior forward Kris Kranzky (Glendora, CA) and junior forwards Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) and Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) comprised the team s top three goal scorers from a year ago and did it on UMass Boston s top line. Kranzky tallied a team-high 27 points on eight goals and a teambest 19 assists, which ranked fourth among ECAC East leaders. He is the ultimate power forward with his combination of size and shot. Tufman gained experience on the world stage following the college season, 4 Forward S EASON OUTLOOK Sophomore forward Chris Wyman tied for the team lead with fi ve power play goals last year. helping Team USA to a gold medal at the World Jewish Ice Hockey Championship last summer. He tied for the Beacons lead with 10 goals and added 16 assists. He s one of the team s most gifted passers and will be counted again as one of the league s best players. Atsoff worked extremely hard in the offseason to become a better goal scorer to add to last year s 16-point effort, which included nine scores. He s a tough player, who not only crashes the net well and shoots hard, but also hits hard on the ice. Junior Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) enjoyed a breakout season last year with 10 goals to place 11th among league leaders, while adding nine assists. He creates scoring opportunities really well and could be a dangerous player for opponents in the league this year. Classmate David Lun (Grand Rapids, MI) is very physical, aggressive player, who should open up the ice for his linemates. A strong presence on the ice, he will also be counted on to kill penalties. Senior forward Anthony Cosmano (Wheaton, IL) posted a career-high in goals last year and is poised to have his biggest season yet. His experience and stick handling skills will be an asset for UMass Boston. Junior forward Vinnie Jacona tied for the teamlead with 10 goals last season. The addition of sophomores Bryan Albert (Redlands, CA) and Chris Wyman (Bartlett, IL) gave the Beacons a pair of dynamic two-way players last year. Albert could be the team s most complete player on both ends of the ice. He contributed with 13 points, including nine assists a year ago and has tremendous speed. He will also be utilized on special teams for UMass Boston, while Wyman is a creative offensive player, as evidenced by his 19- point output that saw him tally eight goals. He s smart on the defensive end as well and will contribute in various situations. Sophomore Jeff Van Siclen (Alamo, CA) worked extremely hard in the offseason and will look to make more of a contribution on offense. He s a big, strong forward with a good shot and will look for increased ice time. Classmate Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) could also be in line to make more of a scoring impact after racking up nine points last year, including six assists. He will also be an asset on the faceoff and could see action on the power play. Sophomore Bill Baker (Vancouver, BC) is one of the Beacons most imposing figures on the ice at 6 7 and will move back to his natural forward spot after a year on the blue line. He moves really well for his size and his reach should serve as an advantage against the opponent. Another advantage UMass Boston will have this season is a group of intense, hardworking forwards that will serve as part of the heart and soul of the team s efforts. Sophomores Andrew Burke (Southampton, PA), Kyle Tejchma (Fruitport, MI) and Jimmy Ennis (Roslindale, MA) all come into the season having overcome adversity in one way or another. Burke tore his knee up and underwent surgery in the offseason, but comes into the season as the team s top conditioned athlete with a motor that just doesn t stop on or off the ice. He s an intense player, who brings energy and will be effective on the penalty kill. Tejchma is the team s spark plug. He s extremely quick and strong to make up for any deficiency in his size. He plays the 2009-10 UMass Boston Men s Ice Hockey beaconsathletics.com

Defenseman S EASON OUTLOOK body regardless of size and is outstanding on the penalty kill. Ennis made the team as a walk-on last year and personifies the work ethic of the squad. He gives his best every night and is also a good penalty killer. Junior Lenward Gatison II (Blue Bell, PA) returned to the rink last year after taking some time away and is one of the hardest working players. He has tremendous speed and brings great energy and tenacity to the ice. Freshman Michael Crowder (Flint, MI) is one of three newcomers to the team s group of forwards. In just his first season, his 6 5, 225- pound frame will make him one of the league s most intimidating players on the ice. He possesses the quickest, hardest shot on the team and is a pure goal scorer. Freshman Mike DeGrazia (Novi, MI) has good vision and is an extremely skilled player. He will look to crack the regular lineup and contribute right away. Fellow rookie Tim Richter (Naugatuck, CT) should also add to the offense as an excellent goal scorer and has the potential to make an impact. Like the forwards, the Beacons defensemen also include a formidable group with outstanding leaders and experience. Senior Captain Steve Ebbole (Wheaton, IL) returns for his final season after missing time with various injuries last season. He is one of the team s best skaters on the blue line and will make things difficult for the opposition, especially on the penalty kill. He plays the body well and is very physical. Junior Assistant Captain Brett Calhoun (Tulsa, OK) heads a group of defensemen, who should give UMass Boston some beaconsathletics.com Junior defenseman Gentry Zollars adds versatility to a solid group of blueliners. offensive punch from the blue line as well. He registered his second straight campaign of double-digit points with five goals and eight assists and was 14th among ECAC East leaders in points. He s a vocal leader, who will be a key on both the power play and penalty kill. Classmate Gentry Zollars (Pittsburgh, PA) is a versatile player, who will be used strictly as a defenseman this year. He s a hard-nosed in your face player, who will be a big contributor for the Beacons. Sophomore Wayne Sands (Chalfant, PA) comes off a fantastic first year that saw him set the school record with 10 goals by a blueliner to lead all league defensemen, while ranking 10th in points for ECAC East defenders. He will be an important cog on the power play once again after netting five goals with the extra skater last year. Sophomore John Hubbard (Arlington, TX) saw action in 13 games last year and is another offensive defenseman with good stick skills and a good shot from the point. UMass Boston also added some fine defensemen in this year s class of newcomers. Freshman Steven Weston (Henniker, NH) is a good allaround defenseman, who will strengthen the defense. He s a smart player, who moves the puck well and will see time on the power play, while classmate Tim Niedzielak (Chicago, IL) is a big, strong bruising blueliner with a powerful, quick shot Sophomore blueliner Wayne Sands set a school record for goals by a defenseman last year. Goaltender 2009-10 UMass Boston Men s Ice Hockey 2009-10 from the point. He plays the body well and will add a physical element to the Beacons defense. Freshman Chris Wilcox (Hollywood, FL) is a very smooth skater and will provide support on the offensive rush for UMass Boston. UMass Boston s goalie contingent could the strongest it s been in over a decade or more with an all-conference performer as well as former goaltender of the year returning along with a very good netminder, who can stand up against anyone. Senior Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY) enters the final season of one of the greatest careers of any goalie in school history. Donovan earned ECAC East Honorable Mention honors last year after posting a career-low 3.26 goals against average to go with a.899 save percentage. He solidified his trademark of rising to the occasion in big games with a 1-0 overtime shutout in the ECAC East quarterfinals at Norwich and will be the backbone of the Beacons again this year. Sophomore Kevin Bendel (Denville, NJ) will also play significant minutes this year for UMass Boston. He performed well after joining the team in midseason last year with a 2.96 GAA and a gaudy.920 save mark. He took nationally-ranked Norwich to overtime in his debut and picked up his first career shutout in his second collegiate start. He s extremely athletic and loves competition. Freshman Rich Stine (Trumbull, CT) just adds to an already strong group for the Beacons. He s highly touted out of the Atlantic Junior Hockey League and can cover a a lot of net. 5

2009-10 ECAC EAST Home to 12 of the most prestigious ice hockey programs in the nation, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) is a conference filled with tradition, legendary players, coaches and administrators and a bright and exciting future. In terms of tradition, no conference can lay claim to the history of the ECAC. The birthplace of collegiate ice hockey, member institutions have been sponsoring the sport for nearly a century. On February 1, 1896 in Baltimore, Maryland, Yale faced Johns Hopkins in the first collegiate ice hockey game. Two years later on January 19, 1898, Brown defeated Harvard in Boston in the first college hockey game between schools still sponsoring the sport. From a team standpoint, Cornell (1969-70) stands as the only team in NCAA ice hockey history to produce a perfect unbeaten and untied record en route to the Division I men s title. The Big Red posted a mark of 29-0-0 under coach Ned Harkness, a Hockey Hall of Fame inductee in 1994. On the ice, legendary players such as Princeton s Hobart Amory Hare Hobey Baker, Cornell goaltending sensation Ken Dryden, who led the National Hockey League s Montreal Canadiens to five Stanley Cups, and Clarkson s Dave Taylor, who starred with the NHL s Los Angeles Kings, are among the numerous standouts who made their mark in the conference. The ECAC East is comprised of 10 teams, including Division II Saint Anselm College and Saint Michael s College. ECAC East plays an interlocking schedule with the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Each game played within this schedule is counted as a conference contest. Each school will play every school once during the regular season, but each conference will have a separate post-season tournament. All Division III teams will qualify for the tournament. 2008-09 ECAC East Standings Conference Overall Team W L T Pts W L T Norwich 11 5 3 25 13 8 4 Castleton 11 6 2 24 15 9 2 Salem State 10 8 1 21 14 9 2 New England 9 8 2 20 15 10 2 Southern Maine 8 8 3 19 11 12 3 Skidmore 8 8 3 19 13 10 3 Babsson 9 10 0 18 13 14 1 Saint Anselm 6 12 1 13 10 15 1 UMass Boston 4 14 1 9 10 16 2 Saint Michael s 4 14 1 9 11 15 2 24 2008-09 ECAC East All-Stars First Team Pos. 2009-10 WHY UMASS BOSTON? There s no doubt. The city of Boston and the surrounding area boast many of the world s finest institutions of higher learning. And UMass Boston is one of them. Here s why you should consider UMass Boston. UMass Boston is a member of the Little East Conference, which is unquestionably one of the top Division III conferences in the nation. Aside from providing a competitive playing environment, the UMB athletic department also doubles as a place where students can receive hands-on training in nearly all facets of athletics administration. At UMass Boston, you learn from the best. A faculty with more Harvard Ph.Ds than any school in the United States (except Harvard). The university is the only educational institution in the Northeast that shares its campus with a presidential library. UMass Boston has won four NCAA Division III national championships, 19 individual national titles and has seen 21 different athletes achieve All-America status a total of 94 times. Our home, the Clark Athletic Center, is one of the best Division III athletic facilities in New England. UMass Boston is the only four-year, state-supported institution inside the Interstate 95 beltway. Students have the opportunity to commute from home or live off-campus with teammates. We re located just three miles from downtown Boston with all of the city s major attractions easily accessible from the campus. Academic Advising At UMass Boston we prepare our students for life. And because the life of a college student can be much more challenging than a basketball game or a soccer match, the UMass Boston athletic department provides you with the means to be successful in whatever sport you play, and also in the game of life. UMass Boston s academic advising center for student athletes is designed to help each Beacon athlete in every sport complete his or her undergraduate degree. We make sure that our students are not solely concerned with maintaining athletic eligibility. We work extensively with the faculty and professional staff on-campus, and we help our students with course selection, advising and counseling, and career and graduate school exploration. When you enroll at UMass Boston, you will get to know your advisor quite well. One of our primary focuses is freshman-year retention, so we are highly motivated in your first year to work with you to develop a plan for academic success. Your advisor will meet with you on a one-to-one basis and introduce you to the Clark Athletic Center s computer lab--a fully equipped facility open exclusively to UMB student-athletes. Your academic advisor will also work with your professors. Your instructors will update the athletic department with progress reports, and when you are having trouble, they will let us know. But more importantly, they ll let us know how we can help you. As a student athlete at UMass Boston you will have unique opportunities to represent the University on a national level and in national programs. Sports Medicine Quite simply, the sports medicine center at UMass Boston is one of the best in the area. It combines the best facility with the best people -- all with the goal of keeping Beacon student-athletes healthy. The sports medicine room falls under the direction of head athletic trainer Ed Perkins, a UMass Boston graduate and former athlete with the Beacons. Before taking over at UMB, Ed worked with the nationally ranked men s basketball team at Temple University before returning to Division III athletics at MIT and at Bridgewater State College. Shannon Soares, a certified athletic trainer in her own right, is the university s assistant athletic trainer. Shannon s credentials include a stint with Dennis- Yarmouth High School as its head athletic trainer and two summers working with top major league baseball prospects in the prestigious Cape Cod League. What that means to you is that when you become a member of the Beacons, you are in the safest environment possible. Whether it be injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, or rehabilitation, the training staff at UMass Boston is looking out for you. Before you are eligible for competition, you will be required to undergo a thorough physical examination. You will be monitored throughout the training phase and competitive season. And the training staff works closely with your head coach to make your participation in Beacon athletics as safe as it can be. To ensure quality individual care, the training staff regularly acquires the latest and most effective modalities. The sports medicine center at UMass Boston is equipped with a four-channel electrical stimulation with combination ultrasound unit, a paraffin bath, two hydrocollator units, a Jobst compression unit and a whirlpool bath. Strength & Conditioning The University of Massachusetts Boston is one of the few NCAA III schools in the country to offer a year round strength and conditioning program. The varsity weight room is designed to improve all areas of athletic performance for all sports. The strength and conditioning coach is a certified professional. The focus is to educate and train athletes on how to properly execute exercises that will allow them to be more efficient with the sports specific movements and enable them to participate with a reduced chance of injury. Our goal is to produce athletes who are faster, stronger and more powerful, in order for them to compete at their highest level. 38 2009-10 UMass Boston Men s Ice Hockey beaconsathletics.com

CLARK ATHLETIC CENTER The student athlete at UMass Boston has a wealth of athletic and recreational facilities available within the confines of the Clark Athletic Center. The athletic center has served as the home of the Beacon basketball program since its completion in 1981. 2009-10 UMass Boston hosts the National Youth Sports Program, an NCAAsponsored summer camp for inner-city youth, as well as the Dana Barros Basketball Camp, the All Dorchester Sports League, the Boston Youth Games, the Boston Housing Authority Jamboree, the Bay State Games and MIAA state tournament games in soccer, ice hockey and basketball. Named for Catherine Forbes Clark, a former trustee of the University of Massachusetts system and prominent Dorchester civic leader, the Clark Athletic Center emulates its namesake by serving the University community as well as area residents throughout the year. Considered one of the finest athletic and recreational facilities in Greater Boston, the complex accommodates the school s 18 intercollegiate sports and extensive intramural program. The Center s building houses a main gymnasium, which includes a 3,500-seat basketball arena along with three auxiliary basketball courts and two volleyball courts, a 1,000-seat ice rink, and an Olympic-size swimming pool with a high-dive area, six 25- yard lanes and an observation deck. A weight room, creative and combative rooms and a sports medicine area round out the interior of the structure. Outside the building, UMass Boston boasts an eight-lane 400-meter track, eight tennis courts, a softball diamond and two multipurpose fields primarily used for soccer and lacrosse. The outdoor facilities also include a boathouse and dock for the sailing program as well as several recreational fields. In addition to extensive use by the intercollegiate and intramural programs, the Clark Athletic Center serves as the site for numerous community activities. Included in the list of community activities are a variety of events for both youth and the physically challenged. The athletic center became the new home of the Boston Shootout, the premier high school basketball tournament in the nation, in 1997 and has served as a workout facility for the Boston Celtics and the 2000 McDonald s All-American High School Basketball team, while also serving as the site of the Sprite Slam Jam. During the summer of 1999, the center began hosting the Shaw s Summer Pro League, featuring current and future stars of the NBA. The center also hosts the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs during the NBA season, serving as a practice site for both of those teams on their visits to Boston. The Clark Athletic Center saw its most excitement for 2000 in just one night when on October 3rd, the University hosted the first United States Presidential Debate of 2000. When the parties finally agreed to the Boston debate, the event was suddenly only two weeks away. In that time frame the Clark Athletic Center had to be converted into a debate hall and the adjacent hockey rink into a media center, replete with red carpet, approximately 700 phones, more than 70 televisions, and accommodations for almost 1,600 media representatives from around the world. The complex has also doubled as a concert venue, hosting multiple-grammy winning artist Kanye West in 2006 as well as the O Jays and Common in 2007. UMass Boston also boasts one of the finest personal fitness facilities in the area in the Beacon Fitness Center. The state-of-the-art recreational area provides students, faculty and staff with modern equipment in a clean environment. The fitness center offers cardiovascular machines, nautilus and free weights, squash and racquetball courts, a walking track and aerobics. 2009-10 Intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and recreation for students, staff and faculty are the primary programs of the UMass Boston Department of Athletics. The department offers 18 varsity sports and is a member of the NCAA s Division III. UMass Boston has teams competing in the ECAC, the Little East Conference and ECAC East Ice Hockey. Ninetythree Beacons in seven sports have been named All-Americans. The women s indoor and outdoor track and field teams had an outstanding record of achievement, including four NCAA Team Championships and 37 individual NCAA Championships. But the Department of Athletics has another important concern as well--service to the community. Whether it s complimentary use of the University s athletic facilities, coaches and student athletes sports clinics for youth groups, or holiday visits to area hospitals, UMass Boston Athletics is in the forefront of serving area neighborhoods and communities throughout the state. More than 150 school, charitable, government and private organizations use UMass Boston athletic facilities each year at little or no cost. Over 2,500 people visit our athletic facilities each year, as participants or spectators. UMass Boston s indoor and outdoor athletic facilities are in use by visitors for over 2100 hours each year. In 2007 the National Consortium for Academics and Sports named the Department of Athletics at UMass Boston as # 1 in the country among Division III institutions and seventh overall for Community Service. UMass Boston was named Honorable Mention by the National Association of Division III Athletics Administrators/Jostens in the category of An Array of Projects or Activities in 2005. UMass Boston is in a unique position as the only public university in the City of Boston. For that reason, the University has a responsibility above and beyond its mission to provide a superior higher education at moderate cost to the people of the metropolitan area. Because of its urban environment and its spacious, coastline location, the University can reach out to its neighbors and provide first rate facilities for healthy, stimulating sports and recreational activities. National Consortium for Academics and Sports member institutions develop Outreach and Community Service programs with current student-athletes and former student-athletes from the Degree Completion Program. Over the last 23 years, NCAS member institutions, through their outreach and community service programs, have reached more than 17.6 million youth nationwide with messages about violence prevention, gender sensitivity, conflict resolution, the importance of academics and athletics, staying in school, the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and much more. Since 1985, NCAS student-athletes have given over 19 million hours of community service. There is no one way to conduct school outreach programs. It is clear from the great work done by NCAS members that there are many ways to provide quality programs. Their diversity and contributions to our nation is extraordinary. 2009-10 The Codfish Bowl Considered the premier Division III hockey tournament in the country, the Codfish Bowl is the second-oldest invitational in the nation. The Codfish Bowl hockey tournament originated December 30 on Huntington Avenue with Boston State College. Consolation Game Boston State athletic director James Gus Sullivan Championship Game and hockey coach Ed Barry formed the event in 1965 with the intent to provide small schools in the area a tournament to display their talents. The two named the tournament after the state fish, the cod, and the hockey gala was born. BEACON TRADITION Boston State won the first five tournaments and captured six of the first seven titles. Following the merger of Boston State with UMass Boston in 1982, the tournament has been a part of the Beacon tradition for the last 27 years, in which time it has evolved into a showcase for Division III hockey. Adding to the prestige of the Codfish Bowl is the legacy of great performances throughout the tournament s history. Several of the key performers in past Codfish games have gone on to success in the professional ranks as well. Boston State goaltender Bill Berglund earned two consecutive Most Valuable Player awards in the tournament before moving on to the World Hockey League. Dick Lamby of Salem State won MVP honors on his way to the Olympic Games, the St. Louis Blues and the New York Rangers. Lowell s Craig MacTavish was the MVP of the 1978 tournament, and he went on to win Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers. Hubie McDonough, meanwhile, won MVP honors for Saint Anselm in 1984 before taking his game to the New York Islanders and San Jose Sharks. In addition to the personalities, the Codfish Bowl has seen equally memorable moments. Longtime followers of the tournament will never forget Dick Kelly s end-to-end rush in 1969 as Boston State edged Merrimack to win its fifth straight title. UMass Boston fans will remember Scott Duffy s double-overtime goal against eventual national champion Babson in the 1983 championship game and Mike Snuggs 32-save shutout in 1997 to help return the bowl to the Harbor Campus. Ryan Equale of Connecticut ended the longest game in tournament history when he scored with seven seconds remaining in double overtime to give the Huskies their first title. And who can forget the 1986 tournament, in which all four games were decided in overtime. The nickname was chosen because UMass Boston sits on Boston Harbor, where lighthouses dot the coastline. The most renowned lighthouse in Boston Harbor, or the rest of the country for that matter, is Boston Light. Located at the entrance to the harbor, the structure has guided ships to safe harbor since first illuminating its beacon in 1716. The British destroyed Boston Light in 1776, but Governor John Hancock had the lighthouse rebuilt in 1781. On September 23, 2002, UMass Boston introduced a new Beacon and changed its colors to Beacon Blue, Black and White. 42 2009-10 UMass Boston Men s Ice Hockey beaconsathletics.com
