The one-point victory is Canisius first since Dec. 18, 2014 when the team beat Stony Brook 60-59 in overtime at home. 4The win was not only the team s first of the season, but it also marked the program s first win under new head coach Reggie Witherspoon. 4The Griffs ended the night with 24 assists on 27-made baskets. Nine of the 11 Canisius players who saw time in the win had at least one assist, let by sophomore Chris Atkinson and his game-high five helpers. 4The win by Canisius also snapped Duquesne s 11-game home winning streak in non-league games, which dated back to Dec. 28, 2014. CANISIUS NAMES WITHERSPOON HEAD COACH 4 The Griffs game at Kentucky Nov. 13 officially started the Reggie Witherspoon era at Canisius. The Buffalo native was named the school s 24th head men s basketball coach on May 28. 4Witherspoon took over the Golden Griffin program after former head coach Jim Baron retired on May 20, 2016. Baron serves as Canisius head coach for four seasons and took the Griffs to three CIT appearances. 4Witherspoon is no stranger to college basketball in Western New York. He served as the head coach at the University at Buffalo for 14 season from 1999-13. There he was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year twice (2004, 2012) while posting a career record of 198-228. 4In his last 10 years directing the Bulls, Witherspoon had a record of 174-143, which featured a MAC regular-season crown, two trips to the MAC Tournament title game, an NIT berth, a bid to the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) and a pair of trips to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). 4In his time at Buffalo, Witherspoon led the Bulls to four 20-win seasons, highlighted by back-to-back 20-win campaigns in 2010-11 and 2011-12. 4Prior to returning to his hometown, Witherspoon served as an assistant at Chattanooga under head coach Matt McCall for the 2015-16 season. One year prior to that, he served as an assistant coach at Alabama on Anthony Grant s staff for the 2014-15 campaign. NEW YEAR - NEW FACES 4 In addition to a new head coach and coaching staff, Canisius started the 2016-17 season with seven new names on the roster, including four true freshmen. 4 The Griffs return six letterwinners from last year s squad that went 14-19 overall and 8-12 in MAAC play. Those six players started the year with a combined 285 games of Division I college basketball. 4 Canisius top returner is senior forward Phil Valenti, a 2016-17 Preseason All- MAAC Third-Team selection. Valenti is the team s top returning scorer and rebounder after he logged 14.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game a season ago. 4 Of the seven new players on the roster, five were brought in by first-year head coach Reggie Witherspoon and his news staff. 4 Freshmen Spencer Foley and Malik Johnson are the only two freshmen that signed to join the Canisius program during the NCAA s early signing period in Nov. 2015. CANISIUS PICKED NINTH IN MAAC POLL 4 Canisius was recently picked to finish ninth in the annual MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll. It is the lowest preseason prediction for the Griffs since 2014-15, when the team was picked for 10th out of 11 teams. 4 Monmouth, the defending MAAC regular-season champion, is the league s preseason favorite to win the conference s title. 4 Senior Phil Valenti was the only Canisius player named to a preseason allstar unit by the MAAC s 11 head coaches. The Victor, N.Y., native was named Preseason All-MAAC Third Team, his second-straight appearance on the MAAC s preseason third-team unit. THE GRIFFS NOT AFRAID TO SHOOT FROM DEEP 4 After draining 13 3-point field goals at Duquesne Nov. 18, Canisius has now hit 10-or more 3-pointers in a game 43 times since the start of the 2012-13 campaign. 4Since the start of the 2012-13 season, Canisius has made 1,115 3-point field goals on 3,122 tries from long range. That breaks down to a 35.7 percent success rate. 4 The Griffs start tonight s game against Tennessee State averaging 7.8 3-point field goals per game, which ranks fourth in the MAAC and 147th in the nation. MAKING THE FREE ONES COUNT 4 Canisius finished the 2015-16 season by shooting 74.1 percent from the free-throw line, which ranked second in the MAAC and 36th in the nation. 4 The 74.1 percent effort from the free-throw line ranks as the second-best in school history, and it also marked the second time the team shot 74 percent or better from the line in the last three years. 4 Through four games this year, Canisius is shooting 75.8 percent from the charity stripe, which is second in the MAAC. 4 After going just 13-for-20 from the line in the season-opener at Kentucky, the Griffs are shooting 81.0 percent (34-for-42) from the stripe in the last three games, including an 11-for-12 effort in the win at Duquesne Nov. 18. SHARING IS CARING 4 Canisius was credited with a season-high 24 assists on 27-made field goals in the team's win at Duquesne Nov. 18, which included a stretch where the team's first 22 makes from the field were credited with an assist. 4 The Griffs followed that trend on Monday, as the Blue and Gold were credited with 19 assists on 25 makes from the field. Through four games, 70.3 percent of Canisius baskets came off an assist. 4 Through four games, Canisius is averaging a MAAC best 17.8 assists per game, which ranks 39th in the nation. DEFENSIVE ATTITUDE 4 Canisius ended the 2015-16 season ranked 310th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing opponents to score an average of 78.4 points per game, 4 New head coach Reggie Witherspoon and his staff have made defense, and defensive intensity, a focus point during preseason practices. 4 Through four games this season, Canisius opponents are averaging 77.2 points per game and shooting a combined 48.3 percent from the floor. 4 In Canisius last 38 games (dating back to last season), the Blue and Gold have allowed 25 opponents to shoot 40 percent or better from the field. In those 25 games, Canisius is 13-12. GRIFFS GO SHARPIE 4 The Griffs are 41-1 since the start of 2013-14 when leading at the 2:00 mark of the second half of a game. 4 Canisius led by three points with 5:00 left on the clock when the team lost to Hofstra in the 2015-16 season opener. The Griffs are 37-4 since 2013-14 when leading at the 5:00 mark in the second half. PROTECT THIS HOUSE 4 The Griffs own an all-time record of 215-128 (.627 win percentage) in the Koessler Athletic Center, but are 94-96 (.495 win percentage) since 2001. 4 Canisius did not use the Koessler Athletic Center as its main home venue until 1999-00. PLAYER NOTES PHIL-ING IT UP 4 Canisius senior Phil Valenti scored 21 points in the team s win loss to UT Martin on Monday night, the 41st time in his career where he s posted double-digit points in a game. 4 The Victor, New York native has scored 10-plus points in 11-straight games, dating back to last season. That string includes a 33-point performance in the 2016 MAAC Tournament first-round win over long-time rival Niagara. 4 Valenti comes into tonight s game against Tennessee State needing just 65 points to reach 1,000 points for his career. He will be the 35th player in the program s 113-year history to reach the famed 1,000-point milestone. 4 Valenti, the team s top returning scorer (14.6 ppg) and rebounder (6.1 rpg) started the 2016-17 season by being named to the Preseason All-MAAC Third-Team. VALENTI PROVIDES A HELPING HAND 4 Senior forward Phil Valenti has been credited with multiple assists in 26 of the Griffs last 37games, dating last season, after he dished out two assists against UT Martin on Monday night. 4 In the loss to Cleveland State on Nov. 15, Valenti matched a career-high with six assists. He also had six assists Nov. 13, 2015 when the Griffs played at Hofstra. 4 Valenti is averaging 3.5 assists per game this season, which ranks ninth in the MAAC and first among players listed as front court players. 5 MAKES 3s 4 Canisius junior Kassius Robertson hit a pair of 3-point field goals in the loss to UT Martin on Monday, the 38th time in his career where he has made multiple 3-pointers in one game. 4 Robertson starts tonight s game with 126 career makes from behind the arc, which ranks 13th in school history. 4 The MAAC leader with 86 makes from 3-point land in the 2015-16 campaign, Robertson ended his sophomore campaign ranked third on the school s single-season 3-point makes list. 4 With his two long-range makes against UT Martin at home Nov. 21, Robertson became just the fourth player in school history to his 125 career 3-pointers in 70 or fewer career games. He joins former Griffs Toby Foster, Billy Baron and Zach Lewis on that list. KASSIUS IS CASH-MONEY FROM DEEP 4 Canisius junior Kassius Robertson has hit multiple 3-point field goals in all four Canisius games this season, and he starts tonight ranked fourth in the MAAC with his 2.8 3-pointers per game average this year. 4 The Toronto native led the team and ranked second in the MAAC with 86 makes from behind the arc last season, which also ranked 65th in the nation. 4 Robertson enters tonight s game shooting 37.9 percent from 3-point land. Last season, he shot 40.4 from behind the arc, and he currently ranks sixth in school history (among players with 100- plus career makes) in 3-point shooting percentage at 39.6 percent for his career. CRUMP GETS BUSY 4 Junior forward Jermaine Crumpton posted 17 points in the team s loss to UT Martin on Monday, extending his streak of scoring in double-figures to four games, which is the longest stretch in his career. 4 Crumpton was the Griffs leading scorer with 18 points in the win at Duquesne Nov. 18. In that win, he drilled a career-high four 3-pointers and was also credited with seven rebounds. 4 The Niagara Falls, New York native starts tonight s game averaging a team-best 17.3 points per game, which ranks him seventh in the MAAC. 16-17 Team Statistics Category Figure MAAC NCAA Scoring Offense... 70.0 8th 266th Scoring Defense... 77.2 5th 253rd Scoring Margin... -7.2 6th 283rd Field Goal Pct.....443 2nd 183rd FG Pct. DOUSE THE GLASS 4 Senior guard Kiefer Douse pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds at Cleveland State Nov. 15, a new career-high for the Brampton, Ontario native. 4 Douse matched his previous career-high of six boards in that game s first half, and he ended the night with five rebounds off the offensive glass and five boards on the defensive end of the floor. 4 In the team s loss to UT Martin on Monday night, Douse was credited with a season-high 11 points to go along with four rebounds. The 11-point effort was the third career 10-plus point game for him. 2016-17 CANISIUS BASKETBALL GoGriffs.com @Griffs_MBB PAGE 6

PLAYER NOTES JOHNSON ON POINT 4 Freshman guard Malik Johnson made his first career start Nov. 13 when the Griffs played at No. 2/4 Kentucky. 4 Johnson, who signed his NLI to join the Canisius program in Nov. 2015, became the first true freshman to start the Griffs season opener since Kevin Bleeker in 2011-12. 4 Johnson scored six points to go with two boards and an assist in 30 minutes against the Wildcats. 4 The Richmond, Virginia native was credited with a career-high five rebounds and dished out a career best three assists in the loss to UT Martin Monday. 4 Johnson s older brother, Robert, also plays Division I basketball. He is a junior on the Indiana roster. REESE TAKES CARE OF THE BALL 4Freshman Isaiah Reese comes into tonight s game against Tennessee State with an assist-toturnover ration of 4.0 in the Griffs last three games. In that span, he s been credited with eight assists against just two turnovers. 4 The Miami, Florida native had a career-high four assists against no turnovers in the win at Duquesne Nov. 18, highlighted by his assist on the game-winning basket by senior Phil Valenti. 4 Through his first four career games in a Canisius uniform, Reese has a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio, which is tied for third in the MAAC. ATKINSON MAKES THE MOST OF HIS TIME 4Canisius sophomore guard Chris Atkinson made the most of his nine minutes played in the Griffs win at Duquesne Nov. 18, as he was credited with a game-high five assists. 4The Hempstead, New York native matched a career-high with those five assists, last accomplished Dec. 22, 2015 when the Blue and Gold beat ULM in triple-overtime in Las Vegas. 4Atkinson played all 33 games last season as a rookie, and saw his string of 34-straight games come to an end Nov. 15, when he did not play in the team s loss at Cleveland State. FAULKNER GETS ON THE BOARD 4Canisius sophomore forward Jibreel Faulkner scored his first career points in the Griffs loss at Kentucky Nov. 13. 4The Washington, D.C., native came off the bench and scored six points to go along with two rebounds and an assist in nine minutes of action. 4Faulkner started his college career at Cal-Northridge in 2014-15 before transferring to San Jacinto Junior College for the 2015-16 season. O, CANADA 4Canisius 2016-17 roster features five players from Canada, the most of any team in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. 4The Griffs also have a Canadian connection on the bench, as new assistant coach Larry Blunt joined head coach Reggie Witherspoon on the staff this season. 4Before coming to Canisius, Blunt served as the head coach at Orangeville Prep in Mono, Ontario from 2013-16. At Orangeville, Blunt had the chance to coach more than a dozen players that signed NCAA Division I NLIs, including former Kentucky guard Jamal Murray and recent Canisius additions Selvedin Planincic and Dantai St. Louis. FROM CANISIUS TO... THE NFL? 4 Canisius has not sponsored varsity football since 2002. That fact has not stopped former Griff forward Chris Manhertz. 4 Manhertz, a former three-time team captain who graduated from Canisius with both his undergrad and master s degrees in 2014, earned a spot as a tight end on the New Orleans Saints roster and played in five games this season. He was waived by New Orleans and recently signed with the Carolina Panthers. He made his first appearance with the Panthers on Nov. 17. 4 The Bronx, N.Y., native originally signed with the Buffalo Bills in December 2014, but was released midway through training camp. He signed with New Orleans as a free agent and then earned a spot on the squad s practice team after training camp ended in September 2015. 4 Manhertz played four years of hoops at Canisius, where he started 94 of the 116 career games he appeared in. He averaged 6.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game in his career. 4 Manhertz playing tight end in the NFL is somewhat ironic, seeing as he never played organized football prior to reporting to the Buffalo Bills first team workouts in April 2015, and never played in a real football game prior to the 2016 NFL preseason. What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called The Hounds of Zeus in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. POSTGAME NOTES The game was the third all-time meeting between Canisius and Kentucky, with the Wildcats winning all three contests. Witherspoon was named the 24th head coach in school history May 28. He took over for former head coach Jim Baron, who retired May 20, 2016. Seven of the 12 Canisius players that saw time in the game were making their first appearance in a Canisius uniform. Valenti scored the Griffs first points of the season, a lay-up at the 18:18 mark of the first half. The game featured six lead changes and nine ties. CLEVELAND, OHIO -- The host Cleveland State Vikings shot 51.7 percent from the floor in the game s second half, and guard Rob Edwards scored 10 of his team-high 17 points after halftime as the Vikings defeated Canisius 67-64 Tuesday night in the Wolstein Center. Canisius led Cleveland State 36-31 at the half, but the Vikings evened the game with a 9-4 run in the first 2:42 of the second stanza. The game was tight throughout, but Canisius made just three field goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation in the losing effort.
