Fall 2016 LTC News Message from the President 2016 Presidents Message The 2016 season has come to an end. Unlike last year, this was a hot, dry summer. Instead of rainouts, we had match cancellations due to the heat. All in all, it was a good year. I d like to acknowledge all those who contribute to the club. Thank you to: - Ryan Chow, our fantastic head pro - TTA and all their pros, especially coach George - The Merchant of Tennis and Head Penn who continue to support our tournaments - All the team captains, House League captains and John Drummond, who continues to help with HL A special thank you to our fantastic monitors Jamie Tinkler, Andrew Supnet, Pay Hynes, Peter Saunders, Jimmy Wong and lastly Alan. They all do a great job keeping the club running smoothly. The club s Philpott tournament was successful; we raised $3,000 for the Doug Philpott Children s Charity. Congratulations to the Leaside Juniors, as usual they competed hard and made us proud. This year we held a mini Rogers Coup tournament that was covered by the media. Each year we present one or two juniors with a Junior Scholarship. The scholarship is for promising individuals and must be used to encourage the growth of the sport. Congratulations to winners Emina Burnazovic and Nathan Marshall. And to Max Brodie for winning the John Hunt award. Every year we present one member with the Dr. Edward Palacios volunteer award. This year the winner was Marg Fortin The year-end party was held on October 15 th at Against the Grain. Approximately 100 members and guests attended. We had a wonderful evening, filled with great friends, delicious food and great music. Thanks to Alison for throwing a wonderful party. Finally, I d like to thank the dedicated people who give so much of their time to organizing and running this great club. Thank you all, for everything you do. Sadly, Nancy Martin and Maureen Timmins have decided to step down from the Board. I d like to thank them for their years of service. Welcome to the Board Julie Campbell taking over communications and Curtis Lezama who will fill the Treasurer position. Have a great winter, see you in the Spring! 2 Leaside Tennis Club 2016

LTC News Fall 2016 Membership Report For the membership year of 2016, as in previous years, we started returning members renewals in the beginning of November 2015 and we finished accepting applications in the end of January 2016. This was a very smooth and successful approach, as we had almost no members coming late in the process to attempt to renew their membership. The membership numbers in 2016 were very similar from previous years as our goal was to keep the same membership levels. This year we had a total of 583 Adult members, 143 Senior members, and 358 Junior members. In addition to this number we have 64 members securing their spots with a Holding membership that allows no playing time. We accepted 100 new Adults and 88 new Juniors in 2016. We currently have 1098 Adults and 241 Juniors in our waiting list. The membership renewal process for 2017 started on November 1 st and will end on January 31 st, 2017. We will provide help to the members who have difficulty accessing a computer or email. The electronic registration is the preferred method of registration as it is simpler for both the members and our administrators. If you require assistance, please contact Andre Velloso (membership@leasidetennis.org) or by calling his phone number which is published in the LTC directory on the website. This was the first year we could not offer membership for all Juniors in the Junior waiting list. So Adults and Juniors who wish to renew their membership must do so by January 31 st, 2017. We will not be able to offer membership to members after the deadline. Please do not delay! We would really like to see everyone back! The City of Toronto has approved a new Tennis Policy that will affect the way we manage the waiting list for this and subsequent years. Please check the website for full details. Lastly but not least, we will keep our membership fees at the current level. The renewing adult membership fee for Adults is $120, Seniors $80 and Juniors is $65. We are looking forward to a great 2017 season. Andre Velloso, Membership Director Leaside Tennis Club 2016 3

Fall 2016 LTC News Tournament Round Up We ran four very successful tournaments at Leaside this year. We started the season with the Davis Cup on Saturday, May 28, 2016 where team colours played off against each other to take home the honours. The competition was great, the food for the potluck was awesome, and all were winners. Wimbledon Charity Pro Am was held on Saturday, July 09, 2016 and there was plenty of excitement as many players challenged themselves against the Philpott Pro s. We fell short of our anticipated goal but we achieved $3,000.00 for the Philpott Children s Charity via a $25.00 player entry fee and a huge silent auction. I want to send a special thanks to our community partners for donating so many great items for the auction. The Club Championships were held over three different weeks in September, starting after the Labour Day weekend. We had one draw for each division with a consolation round. This year we were able to get over 90 participants. Finally, the KAOS tournament lived up to its name with 24 participants. Congratulations to our Winners: Division Champions Finalists Men s Singles Thomas Lawler Nader Balata Men s Doubles Women s Singles Josh Peplow Michel Bregere Laurel Neal Thomas Lawler Scott Maier Leila Harwood Women s Doubles Men s Consolation Singles Men s Consolation Doubles Women s Consolation Singles Women s Consolation Doubles Mixed Doubles Mixed Consolation Doubles Shewana Sheikh Monica Byrne Colin Henry Tal Fadel Greg Fanjoy Pam Haines Christine Terashita Petra Kozel Thomas Lawler Laurel Neal Graham Shirley Teresa Johnson Rukhsana Chaudry Louise Uyede Mike Law George Gutierrez John Lee Sara Austin Sara Austin Teresa Johnson Glen Harwood Leila Harwood George Gutierrez Rukshana Chaudry 4 Leaside Tennis Club 2016

LTC News Fall 2016 The LTC Social Scene What a fabulous season for tennis. Great weather all around!! We had a good turnout for the open house with over 100 members getting caught up after a long winter. There was a lot of great food and drinks that all the members enjoyed. The Tuesday & Thursday socials are a great success and what an amazing job Pat Hynes does. Thank you Pat! Against the Grain was a great venue for the year-end party and there were over 80 attendees. Included were appetizers, a three-course meal and three drink tickets per person with awards and a DJ to dance the night away. You could not beat the price of $35 per person. I think everyone had a good time Thanks to all participants that helped set up the courts in the spring and served cookies and juice, set up chairs and anything else I may have missed. I can t wait for the next season. Have a safe and healthy winter! Allison Williams, Social Director I Leaside Tennis Club 2016 Year End Party at Against the Grain 5

Fall 2016 LTC News Junior Development Individual Awards The John Hunt award is to recognize volunteerism. The scholarship is to recognize talent and promise. This year the John Hunt Sportsmanship Award was given to Max Brodie. Junior Scholarships of $500 each were awarded to Emina Burnazovic and Nathan Marshall. Both Emina and Nathan have displayed exemplary development this season and the Club wishes them continued success. 2016 Highlights Spring Clinics, two sessions each lasting three weeks in May and June, included over 180 Juniors. Fall clinics, in September, involved 35 participants. Both showed significant increases from last year. The addition of competitive level clinics this year was very well received. The launch of an online registration was largely successful. Our Junior Carnival & Social, which took place in late May, involved almost a hundred Juniors (with parents). The second ever Junior Fall Challenge, based on the Davis Cup tournament format, attracted over twenty players between the ages of elven and sixteen playing for one of the four Grand Slam nations Australia, France, United Kingdom and United States in doubles competition. InterCounty Play Our Inter-club Program included a number of our Juniors participating in the Toronto Doubles League and an ICTA Junior League. In fact, Leaside won the boys A division inter-county for Toronto Central and placed second at the end year-end tournament for division winners. 2016 Junior Club Championship Results Held in mid-june, involved approximately 50 juniors with the following results: Goals for Next Year: Category Champion 18 & under (Mixed) Champion: Jonathan Law 14 & under (Mixed) Champion: Louis St. Pierre 12 & under (Girls) Champion: Alexia Radulescu 12 & under (Boys) Champion: Nathan Marshall 10 & under (Boys) Champion: Ian Cassidy 10 & under (Girls) Champion: Paige Johnson-Shirley Continue strong Junior participation Tweak online registration for clinics Provide further opportunities for high performance play I also want to thank head pro Ryan Chow and George Cenic for their invaluable role in the development of our Junior players this year. Thanks also to our staff of young assistant pros who are essential in support. Finally, a big thanks to Holly Robertson, who happens to be my wife, who co-organized and co-hosted many of the Junior events at the club this season. Eric Robertson, Junior Development Director 6 Leaside Tennis Club 2016

Fall 2016 LTC News Adult Development Program The 2016 Adult Development Program had another strong year. Thank you to the members who participated, and a special thank you to Senior Pro Ryan, and his team of coaches. There was significant interest in the adult clinics with approximately 90 of our members participating in at least one clinic (a 12% increase over last year). Approximately 40% of those members who participated signed up for more than one clinic. The most popular clinics were weekdays at 9:00 am and Saturday afternoons. Ryan and his talented staff of coaches, coupled with enthusiasm from all participants made for a very enjoyable 2016 adult development program. Hopefully everyone had a chance to put those improved skills to use during the sunny summer of 2016. Over the last five years, I have signed up for many clinics and personally benefited from the program. I have strengthened my playing skills under Ryan s watchful eye, met new tennis-minded people whom I now play doubles with, and built camaraderie within the club, including joining the executive board. I strongly recommend becoming engaged in the upcoming 2017 tennis season. The ON-LINE registration system for the 2016 Adult clinics was very successful so we will be extending it for the upcoming 2017 season. Stay tuned for more details in the New Year! I am always looking to improve the Adult Clinic Program so if members have suggestions, please submit them to adult_clinics@leasidetennis.org. Brenda Lum-Bateman, Adult Development Director House and Courts I would like to start by thanking Ryan Chow and his team of court supervisors: Allan Cruz, Andrew Supnet, Jamie Tinker, Peter Saunders and Jimmy Wong. They are the people behind the scenes who make your Leaside experience so pleasant. Also a think you to Dennis Yoshimoto for keeping an eye out for the lights and the Sunday morning court openings. Along with many minor improvements, we accomplished the following: - We purchased new cushions for the club house furniture - We consulted with the court builders and decided to replace the net posts next spring, at the same time as the court cracks are being repaired - We added Leaside Tennis Club to the city s list to have our courts completely rebuilt. The wait is approximately 10 years. - The courts remained open until October 31, 2016. We do our best to keep the facilities well equipped but if you notice something that needs to be addressed, please send me a note at info@leasidetennis.org. Tom Kern, Director, House & Courts 8 Leaside Tennis Club 2016

LTC News Fall 2016 House League I would like to first say we had an extremely successful spring and summer House League this year. The weather cooperated throughout the season, and we had few, if any rain dates. If anything we had more heat alerts that cancelled house league tennis. Now success doesn t come without its challenges. We had a few problems with getting Captains to participate this year to volunteer and once we did get Captains many people became frustrated with the number of participates that had failed to show up for games or find replacements. This really became difficult when individuals were scheduled to play at 7pm, as last minute replacements are not easily found. Members should be cognizant that Captains and Board Members are volunteers who have jobs as well as the members. They are simply volunteering their time for the betterment of the club. The Captains have met to discuss the issues and have come up with a few suggestions to improve House League going forward: - Keeping the current format (Spring: 6 teams for 10 weeks; Summer: 4 teams for 12 weeks). - House League to start mid-april, preceded by a Round Robin. Spring session to end in a Bash & Round Robin; - Introduce a Convener who would assist players in finding spares when required; - The Convener would not be able to also serve as a Captain; - The Convener would act as a Court Supervisor for Wednesday evening (6-11pm) to ensure reliable and qualified attendance; - Develop a system that encourages Co-Captains which will help expand the volunteer base; - Document directions for the Captains for allocating playing time based on availability of each player to play over the season; - Develop directions for the Captains for allocating playing time based on availability of each player to play over the season; - Develop guidelines on how to deal with chronic no-show offenders (including last minute cancellations); - Revisit the mixed play on courts 5 and 6; - Expand the court time for House League to 1 hour and 15 minutes to allow a full hour of play and 15 minutes for warm-up and shut down. This would extend the session by 3 hours with play ending at 10:45 in the Spring and 9:30 in the Summer; - Redefine the player ranking data to define which court subs are qualified to play on; - Conduct a survey proposed to get feedback from the membership As mentioned these are simply suggestions and not all will be implemented. Therefore, we encourage everyone to take the time to fill in the survey when it comes out. Finally a suggestion has been made to reintroduce a scheduled activity like a Round Robin on Tuesday or Friday run by the Pro. It could be a coached competitive event that would focus on accessing, developing and improving competitive doubles skills. This will be explored further over the Winter. Tony Saunders, House League Director Leaside Tennis Club 2016 9

Fall 2016 LTC News Adult Competitive Teams Our Leaside Tennis Club teams had another fun and competitive season! Thanks to all who participated and represented LTC! Wishing everyone a healthy and enjoyable winter hopefully it will include some indoor court time. 7 Competitive teams results: - Ladies II 1 st place - Ladies IV 4 / 6 - Intercounty B 1 st place - Intercounty C 6 / 9 - Day A 6 / 7 - Day C 7 / 8 As a result of issues raised with the Board throughout the season a Teams Town Hall was held on October 4 th, 2016. A variety of topics were discussed and we will be using this feedback to develop rules for next season. The process will be set out in the newsletter well in advance. I m very appreciative of all the volunteer work done by the captains. Thank you and if you have any questions or concerns please contact me at: info@leasidetennis.org.
