Proceeds from the auction will benefit Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) educational programs in the Midlands. 2017 FIREFLIES MANAGER & COACHING STAFF MANAGER JOSE LEGER On December 15, 2016, the New York Mets announced former South Atlantic League Manager of the Year Jose Leger would return as skipper of the Fireflies. Leger piloted Columbia through its inaugural season in 2016 after having managed the previous South Atlantic League affiliate of the Mets, the Savannah Sand Gnats, in 2015. This year marks the 34-year-old's third managing at the class-a level and eighth overall in the Mets organization. Leger was named SAL Manager of the Year after guiding the 2015 Sand Gnats to a Mets organization-best 84-53 overall record. Even despite seeing 13 different Fireflies hit the disabled list in 2016, the native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, still managed Columbia to a 67-73 overall mark. Leger mentored four South Atlantic League All-Stars last season, including P.J. Conlon, who the Mets eventually named Minor League Pitcher of the Year He was also the skipper of the advanced-rookie level Kingsport Mets from 2012-2014 and the Dominican Summer League Mets in 2010 and 2011. Leger is regarded as one of the savviest young managers in baseball. In July of 2016, Leger joined the coaching staff of six-time MLB All-Star Moises Alou s World Team for the MLB Futures Game during All-Star week in San Diego. During the 2015 season, Leger piloted Savannah through one of the best stretches of baseball in SAL history: an 18-game win streak (at that point, the longest streak in the majors or minors in 10 years). JOSE LEGER S METS COACHING HISTORY Leger played professionally in the Minnesota Twins organization from 2004-2008 as a catcher and infielder. He also had a standout collegiate career in the Peach State. Leger started at Middle Georgia College (Cochran, GA) Year Team Record Notes 2010 DSL Mets 1 39-32 2011 DSL Mets 1 34-36 2012 Kingsport 23-43 2013 Kingsport 40-27 West Division title 2014 Kingsport 34-34 2015 Savannah 84-53 Southern Division title 2016 COLUMBIA 67-73 and helped lead his team to back-to-back Junior College World Series in 2001 and 2002. The infielder then played his final two seasons at Georgia College & State University (Milledgeville, GA) and was an All-Peach Belt Conference selection in 2003 and 2004. During the winter months, Leger serves as bench coach for his good friend and Binghamton Rumble Ponies (NYM, Double-A) manager Luis Rojas Leones del Escogido. Leger helped guide the team to the Dominican Winter League championship in 2015. Leger and his wife, Estela, have two sons: Jose Joaquin and Eduardo Jose. They live in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, during the winter. Coaching Staff Jonathan Hurst (Pitching Coach), a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina, returns for his second season with the Fireflies and 12th overall in the Mets organization. Hurst spent six prior seasons (2010-2015) as the pitching coach of the Kingsport Mets, New York s advanced-rookie affiliate in the Appalachian League. The former big leaguer previously coached in the South Atlantic League in 2007 and 2008 with the former Mets affiliate, the Savannah Sand Gnats. Hurst appeared in seven games for the Mets in 1994 and made his Major League debut with the Montreal Expos in 1992. After a standout career at Spartanburg Methodist, Hurst signed with the Texas Rangers after being selected in the fourth round of the 1987 draft. Joel Fuentes (Hitting Coach) begins his 11th year in the Mets organization and like Hurst his second in Columbia. He spent two seasons (2012-2013) previously in the South Atlantic League, coaching the former Mets affiliate, the Savannah Sand Gnats. He spent 2015 and the 2010 and 2011 seasons as hitting coach of the Mets advanced-a club, the St. Lucie Mets, in the Florida State League. The native of Puerto Rico played collegiately at Southeastern Illinois College and was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 24th round of the 1997 draft. Fuentes played professionally from 1997 to 2003. Page 3
