The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded Tennessee its first permit allowing the trapping of one Peregrine falcon for the use in falconry in 2011. The population of Peregrine falcons, through state and federal conservation efforts, has recovered enough since their near-extinction in the early 20th century to allow for a limited take of these birds for the use in falconry. Current elevation at time of report: 682.58 feet. The water surface temperature is in the mid 80 s. Crappie: Fish docks with jigs, fish under lights at night on steep banks, or fish above trees or brush 20 feet deep on steep banks while using jigs or minnows. Smallmouth Bass: More smallmouths are being caught below Watts Bar Dam than other locations. Fishing during the late or early hours will increase the odds of catching fish. Crankbaits are being used more often than the alternatives. Largemouth Bass: Humps, points, and main lake ledges are targets when the current is flowing. Crankbaits, swimbaits, and plastic worms are being used. Some bass are being caught around the grass on flats located adjacent to the main channel. Striped bass: Fish the tailwater with swimbaits or jigs. Bluegill/Shellcracker: Most fish are being caught while using crickets or worms around river bluffs. (Con t on p. 12) 11

HIWASSEE / OCOEE RIVERS ( Fishing Report con;t from p. 11) Catfish: Current is needed. Drift the main channel. Use meaty baits. Walleye: Reports of walleye being caught in the upper end of the reservoir while trolling crank baits. Also some walleye being caught along rocky points around the mid to lower end of the reservoir while using crank baits. Some of the better success has been reported late in the evening and after dark. -TWRA- Nickajack Reservoir Fishing Report: Reservoir Conditions: Normal elevation: 633.5 feet. Current elevation at report time was 633.02 feet. The water temperature is in the mid 80 s. Largemouth Bass: Drop shotting is a technique being used in deep water. Most of these areas are located near the channel. Grass beds located near the channel are also being targeted by anglers using spinnerbaits or plastic worms. Smallmouth Bass: Most fish are being caught in the upper river or tailwaters. Night fishing is the better time to catch fish. Spotted Bass: Several spotted bass are being caught in the upper reservoir. Crankbaits are being used most often. Crappie: No observations. Catfish: Many fish are being caught by drifters. Use meaty baits. Shad will be the best choice. Some big fish are being caught. 12 Bluegill: Use crickets or worms around steep banks in the river for the better results. -TWRA-

CHEROKEE LAKE Roaring River Dam to Be Removed CROSSVILLE--- An aging dam on the Roaring River will be removed soon in a multi-organizational effort. The exact date will depend on river conditions and visitors should expect limited access in this area. This will be the largest Tennessee dam ever removed for river and stream restoration purposes. The dam is roughly 220 feet across and 15 feet tall. It is located in Jackson County about five miles before the beginning of the lake formed by the Cordell Hull Dam. The Roaring River is designated as a state scenic river and is a (Con t on p. 19) Ramsey Coltrane fishing with his PaPaw out of Gilmore Dock landed this big striper. The Roaring River Dam, built in 1976 by the U.S. Army Corps Skylar Ewart with a nice bass. Rather than repair the dam, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and the Corps of Engineers determined that it would be better to remove the dam, which was originally built at TWRA s request to keep reservoir species from migrating upstream into areas inhabited by stream fish. Fish surveys have shown that the barrier was not effective, and it is no longer needed. Photo of Roaring River, Jackson County (Con t on p. 20) 19

DOUGLAS LAKE ( Dam Removal... con t from p. 19) With the dam failing, it has provided an opportunity to enhance the connectivity within the Roaring River Watershed, said Mark Thurman, TWRA Region III Fisheries Coordinator. While the barrier has not excluded reservoir species, it does still function as a barrier through most of the year. Removing the dam will open up the river for fish such as white bass, sauger, smallmouth bass and redhorse. It will also benefit other species such as the eastern hellbender, whose numbers have declined across the species range. The eastern hellbender is a giant native salamander (growing up to 16 inches) that is listed as endangered in many states. In Tennessee, it is listed as a species of greatest conservation need. The salamander has been found both above and below the dam and its removal will reconnect these populations and allow for improved reproduction and overall species health. We know of more than 2,000 of these dams in Tennessee s rivers and streams. Many have outlived their intended purpose and fallen into disrepair. There is a growing recognition that removing (Con t on p. 21) NORRIS LAKE R.J. Stanley lands a big cat at Indian Creek Dock. Photo courtesy Indian Creek Dock. NORRIS LAKE ( Dam Removal... con t from p. 20) these old dams results in safer rivers for recreation and healthier habitat for wildlife, said Rob Bullard, Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers Program Director with The Nature Conservancy. Partners in the joint effort to remove the aging dam include TWRA, the Corps of Engineers, The Nature Conservancy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and the Southern Aquatic Resources Partnership.
