Kate Martin is the Director of the Kate Martin School of Dance in Levin where her school teaches Ballet, Modern Jazz, Contemporary, Acro & Hip Hop. Kate is a qualified dance teacher & newly appointed Examiner with IDTA (International Dance Teachers Assoc). Kate first trained in Palmerston North training in ISTD and IDTA Ballet and Modern Dance, where she completed major exams for NZAMD Contemporary, ISTD Modern Dance & AJDA. She represented Palmerston North for Modern Jazz at the PACANZ awards. Kate has a Diploma in Dance from Whitirea in Wellington majoring in Commercial Dance where she studied under the tuition of Leigh Evans and Anne Gare and a Contemporary Dance Degree from Unitec in Auckland where she trained with Michael Parmenter. Previous to opening her own school, Kate spent many years performing professionally in New Zealand and has also had professional dance contracts in Spain & China. Kate has been Adjudicating throughout NZ at various competitions for the last 5 years. She thoroughly enjoys this and looks forward to seeing each competitor shine on stage. Kate strongly believes in Mikhail Baryshnikovs quote I never try to dance better than anybody else, I only ever try to dance better than myself. BRANDON CARTER-CHAN Brandon Carter-Chan has trained in Tap, Hip Hop and Musical Theatre since the age of 4, including having Vocal and Keyboard training. He is an accomplished Vocal performer having won national & International competitions and has 2 2

performed at CocaCola Christmas in the Park for several years. He has competed with his own Hip Hop crew at the Street Dance New Zealand (SDNZ) competitions both at the Regional & National finals. He has also completed the NZAMD Solo Diploma in Hip Hop. In Tap Dance he has won numerous awards and championships throughout New Zealand. He has been the overall top competitor at the Auckland Regionals of the Showcase Australasian Dance Championships and won the senior Tap Award at the Showcase Finals at the Gold Coast Australia 2013. Brandon is the current NZ Tap Champion having won the PACANZ Young Performer of the Year 2014. Following that he went on to win the Brisbane Performing Arts Challenge (BPAC) Senior Tap Award in 2015. He has also completed the NZAMD Diploma in Tap. He is a teacher of Tap & Hip Hop at the Carter-Chan Dance Performance Centre in Auckland. He currently trains four Hip Hop Crews who qualified for Battlegrounds World Supremacy. As a member of Platinum Dance he has also choreographed Tap & Hip Hop items for numerous professional events. He most recently has been awarded most outstanding choreographer for the Street section for his Tap and Body Percussion item at the GROUNDED Battle of the Arts NZ 2017. He is a qualified adjudicator and is always very keen to grow the art of Tap and share his passion for this form of dance with other dancers from all genres through workshops, the shows & videos he creates. He feels it is very important for as many audiences as possible to learn and enjoy all different facets of how Tap can be viewed, portrayed and performed. Brandon is in his first year of architectural studies and aims to complete a Master of Architecture with the next 5 years. Following that he aims to head overseas to further his dance career. PLEASE NOTE NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED AGE: Will be reckoned as at the first day of competition ENTRY FEES: Solo classes $10.00 Duos & Trios $12.00 Championship Classes (Tap & Jazz) $15.00 Troupes $15.00 TIME LIMITS: Solos must be no more than 3 minutes unless otherwise stated. The Adjudicator has the option of ringing the bell to stop the performance when the time limit has been reached. COMPETITORS: In the event that the competition is running early please be ready at least 45 mins before stated time to dance. There is to be ABSOLUTELY NO communication with the adjudicator at any time. PRIZES: Medals are awarded to all JUNIOR/INT classes (14 years and under) Cash is awarded to all SENIOR classes (14 years and over) ADMIN. FEE/ HALL ENTRY: An administration fee of $20.00 is compulsory and must Accompany each entry (1 per family). This is for admission Into the hall for as many people as you like throughout the weekend. Except for troupe night when entry is $5.00 per person PROGRAMMES: These will be emailed for a charge of $2.00 CUP RETURNS: These MUST be returned no later than 23 rd January 2018. Thank you CHAMPIONSHIP CLASSES: Any competitor may enter the championship class, provided they have danced an open class tap or jazz solo in this competition. A different dance does not need to be done, nor does a three speed dance (for tap) need to be done in the 12 or under classes, However, TAP CHAMP CLASSES 12 AND OVER MUST DO A THREE SPEED TAP. All winners in the championships will receive money and sashes. MUSIC SOURCE: The theatre has a sound system for CD s only. There are no facilities for playing tapes. A separate CD must be available for each Dance and the CD must be ready to play. Time does not permit finding the track at the 4 4

beginning of a competitor's performance. All CD s must be handed to the Stage Manager when checking in for the Class. STUDENT CHOREOGRAPHY: A dance made up by the student to their choice of music prior to the competition. KITCHEN: Refreshments will be available throughout the weekend. SPONSORSHIP: We would greatly appreciate any sponsorship. Money will go towards sponsoring badges, sashes etc. as well as buying new trophies. We have many classes with no trophy, if you are interested in donating a trophy please contact Nikki. PACANZ NATIONAL YOUNG PERFORMER AWARDS TAP DANCE A Competitors shall be 15 and under 21 years as at 1 October 2018 B C D E Each performer shall compete in three classes during the preliminary round: 1. Championship 3 Speed 2. Tap Dance, own selection (not Song & Dance) 3. Master Class, taken in the manner of an audition, conducted by the Adjudicator no audience observation. The Master Class will be taken Into consideration in determining both the semi final and final placing. There shall be a maximum time limit of four minutes for each dance, taken from the beginning to the conclusion of the dance. A penalty of 5 marks will be imposed if the time limit is exceeded by 10 seconds. There will be a semi-final of up to 12 competitors who will repeat either B1 or B2 at the discretion of the adjudicator. Competitors will be chosen based on their marks in the preliminary round(s). For the Final Award Concert six competitors will be recalled and shall repeat the item not performed at the semi-final NB AT THE NATIONAL COMPETITION Nominees in the Tap section are required to include performance Copies of their music on CD when submitting their entry form and a list of the Titles and composer/artists of the pieces. SOCIETY NOMINATION Each Society, which is a financial member of PACANZ, may nominate up to two Competitors, who shall be selected by the adjudicator, based on Criteria stated In A, B1, B2 and C The adjudicator will determine that a competitor has displayed a sufficient Standard of performance to competently represent that society at the National Finals. 10 The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will 10

Include: A demonstration of adequate preparation An authority of performance A performance with a level of maturity commensurate with a national final competition of this age group. If the adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by an Competitor, then NO nomination will be made The Nominating Society is responsible for paying part of the entry fee to the National Young Performer Awards, which is $75.00 incl gst. The Nominee is responsible for paying their portion of the entry fee to the National Young Performer Awards, which is $175.00 incl gst. CLASS 701 Entry Fee $20.00 PACANZ NATIONAL YOUNG PERFORMER AWARDS TROUPES/GROUPS A. Competitors may be of any age. Competitors may only compete in ONE nominated Troupe/Group for any particular Studio or Educational Institution. E.g. A Competitor may be in ONE Troupe for their Dance Studio and one Troupe for their High School or College. B C D E F Each Troupe/Group shall be nominated at a Member Society Competition by Performing in any dance genre pertinent to the Competition they enter. This Competition is for amateur troupes/groups only and is not open to professionals*. There shall be a maximum time limit of five minutes, taken from the beginning to the conclusion of the music. A penalty of 5 marks will be imposed if the time limit is exceeded by 10 seconds or more. Troupes/Groups who gain nomination must be able to attend the National Young Performer Competition which will be held in Palmerston North. Compulsory registration/orientation will be on the evening of Thursday 19 th October 2017and the competition will be on Friday 20 th October 2017. The winning Troupe/Group will be announced at the completion of Competition on the Friday and it would be greatly appreciated if the group were available to perform at the Final Award Concert on Sunday night 22 nd October 2017. Costumes, choreography & music should be appropriate to the age of both the competitors and suitable for a family audience. NB The CLOSING DATES will be relative to the date of Nomination. Troupe/Group Members names and ages & ENTRY FEE will need to be submitted on the Official Entry Form by the closing date. 11 11

Nominees in the Troup/Group section are required to include performance copies of their music on CD when submitting their entry form, and a list of the titles and composer and/or artists for each piece. The FINAL DATE for submitting music is 8 th September 2018. NB The Nominated Troupe/Group is responsible for paying the entry fee to the National Young Performer Awards, which is $250.00 incl gst. The winning Troupe/Group will receive a Trophy and $1,000 for their Studio. * A professional is someone whose primary employment is being paid to perform or work in the performing arts. SOCIETY NOMINATION Each Society, which is a financial member of PACANZ, may nominate ONE Troupe/GROUPE**, who shall be selected by the adjudicator, based on a performance at the Member Society Competition. The adjudicator will determine that the Troupe/Group has displayed a sufficient standard of performance to competently represent that society at the National Troupe/Group Finals. The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include: A demonstration of adequate preparation An authority of performance A performance with a level of expertise commensurate with the national final Competition. If the adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by any TROUP/ GROUP, then NO nomination will be made. The nominated Troup/Group is responsible for paying the entry fee to the National Young Performer Awards, which is $250.00 incl GST. The winning Troupe/Group will receive a Trophy and $1,000.00 for their Studio. 12 *A professional is someone whose primary employment is being paid to perform or work in the performing arts. For the present purposes, being a student constitutes primary employment and therefore is not seen as a Professional. For the student who receives payment for participation, either teaching or performing, this should not impose professional status on a person if it is by way only of an occasional bonus or benefit rather than their PRINCIPAL means of earning a livelihood. The exception to this is a participating teacher who may perform. 12

**As some Societies split their dance genres and run large Competitions with different judges and/or at different times of the year, they will be able to nominate more than one group to represent their Society. **If a society has 30 or more entries in the Troupe/Group Nomination section, then they are entitled to offer a second Nomination. The selection however, must show a clear contrast in style to the variation in section B1. 3. All performers will participate in a Technical Class conducted by, or for, the Adjudicator. No audience observation will be permitted. The technical class will be taken into consideration in determining both the semi - final and the final placing. C. There will be a semi final of upto 12 competitors wwho will repeat either B1 or B2 at the discretion of the Adjudicator. D. For the Final Award Concert six competitors will be recalled and shall repeat the item NOT performed at the semi final. Society Nomination Each Society which is a financial member of PACANZ, may nominate up to two competitors, which shall be selected by the adjudicator, based on a performance as outlined in A, B1 or B2. 13 13

The adjudicator will determine that a competitor has displayed a sufficient standard of performance to competently represent that society at the National Finals. The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include: A demonstration of adequate preparation An authority of performance. A performance with a level of maturity commensurate with a national final competition of this age group. If the adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by any competitors, then NO nomination will be made. The nominating society is responsible for paying part of the entry fee for National Young Performers of the Year i.e. $75.00 incl gst The Nominee is responsible for paying part of the entry i.e. $175.00 NB Nominees in the ballet section are required to include performance copies of their music on cd when submitting entry form and to supply title and artist.
