Supporters of Cranbrook Football This Saturday 23rd of May is Round #3 of the CAS and IPSHA Football Competitions. Congratulations to the 10B s, 10D s, 9A s, 9B s, 9C s, 9D s, 7A s, 7C s and 6A s who all recorded victories last Saturday. I wish all players, coaches and managers the very best in their Round #4 fixture. Win, lose or draw you must finish a game knowing that you contributed 100% effort for your team mates and that you displayed respect for the opposition and officials at all times. Good luck and enjoy the day! Team lists have been posted on the sport notice board on Level 2, House areas and emailed to players. Please visit the Football page on Cranbrook Connect for further information regarding the season http://cranbrookconnect.cranbrook.nsw.edu.au/schools/seniorschool/sport/football/ Save the Date Cranbrook Football Gala Dinner will be held on Friday night, 14th August 2015, @ Doltone House, Pyrmont 6.30pm start. Please diarise the date. More details will follow later in the season. Finally Congratulations to Asha Phillips who was selected as a shadow player for the CAS Football Squad. This is a great achievement as Asha is in Year 10 and the CAS only select one team of 15 players to compete at the CIS Football Tournament on the 25th and 26th of May. With a young 1st XI Cranbrook team this season, it is hoped that we will have several representatives over the next two years and hopefully a player from Cranbrook will eventually be selected in the CIS team, NSW School Boys and Australian schoolboys teams. 1st XI The 1st XI went out against a strong Waverley side with high hopes. The team was energetic and started the game strong competing for every 50/50 ball. The team began to build some confidence and move the ball fluently which created some early chances for Asha Phillips. Unfortunately Alec Lesmond the captain suffered a concussion as the result of a head clash. Then as the game progressed our midfield was overrun and Waverley scored a cracking volley from outside the 18 yard box. The game developed further and as fatigue set in the game grew in intensity. Unfortunately the game ran away from us and Waverley got another goal taking the final score to 2-0. The team can take some positives from the game and will look to build for the midweek CIS Cup clash against Moriah on Wednesday. By Harvey Billingham 2nd XI The Second XI were 20 seconds away from securing their first three points of the season when a Waverley player brought down a high through ball and slotted it past super-keeper, Michael Millington. The keeper, with help from his strong defensive line, was able to hold off our rivals for the majority of the game and when they scored this goal, we couldn t believe it. Stand out performances came from Jordie Ireland, Michael Turner (goal scorer) and Harvey Billingham (Captain). Next week, we play Trinity and will hopefully get a better result in what will be another close game. 3rd XI The 3rd XI played a solid game of possession-based football, tracking well in defence and maintaining a disciplined shape. There were few opportunities to score in the first half, with the match being a battle of the midfield. In the second half, a clear penalty decision was awarded to Cranbrook, with Nick Rael calmly stepping up and slotting home the goal. We defended strongly, until fatigue got the better of us, and we conceded two quick goals in the dying minutes. Despite pushing numbers forward, we were unable to find an equaliser. An unfortunate result, but the players should rightly be proud of their performance. The 4th XI arrived at danger with high confidence. Playing against the wind in the first half, we were relying on our wingers Siu and Janakoulis to shift the ball up the field. A lack of communication throughout the team lead to wholes in the centre and backline, which let Waverley score two easy goals, whilst Cranbrook missed two easy opportunities. In the second half our mindset had changed. Our defensive line morphed into a wall, and we communicated much more thoroughly. With minutes to go a hand ball by Waverley in the opposition box lead to a penalty, which was scored by Joe Rossi, making the score 2-1 to Waverley. Our morale was boosted, and a couple of seconds later, Anthony Notaras scored from a rebound of Rossi s cross, levelling the score to 2-2. Overall it was a solid game, with the boys showing that they can make a comeback from an increase in communication. 4th XI The 4th XI arrived at danger with high confidence. Overall it was a solid game, with the boys showing that they can make a comeback from an increase in communication. 10A The 10 A s had a good match against Waverley last Saturday. It was a tight and tough game but unfortunately we ended up losing 2-1. Our midfield and played well, pulling some great saves left, right and centre. He also saved a penalty! Our goal came late in the first half thanks to some clever mid field work setting up our Left- Winger Charlie Thaxter who drew a penalty in the box. Julio then finished it off with a shot in the bottom left corner. Great effort from the team and we will use this as encouragement to aim up for a win next week! 10Bs It was one of those days where the 10Bs were nervous and excited at the same time. During the first half we kept a high level of intensity playing in there half and managing to obtain a penalty, which was scored by Michael Orfanos, however Waverly played tactically down the wings and put the ball at the back of the net to get the score level. The second half was another game in itself as both teams found their feet to play as a team. At times, Waverly were playing rather physical which gave Cranbrook a chance at a free kick which was taken by Leopold Balaz but missed only by a fraction. Christian Saunders scored from a cross shortly after and towards the end of the game Charlie Thaxter from the left wing. With only 5 minutes remaining Cranbrook was too forward from attacking which allowed Waverly to kick the ball down the line and score from the wing. It was an impressive win where everyone played well but the standout was Will Cahill being man of the match with some great saves throughout the game to keep us in it with a fighting chance. 10C The 10C game was played with high intensity throughout the entire match, with both teams creating good chances to snatch a win. Tackles were flying in from all angles and both teams were evenly matched when the game finally ended in a 1-1 draw. Tim Messenger opened the scoring for Cranbrook, taking a set piece and scoring from the corner, from then on Cranbrook were put on the back foot and let Waverley pressure the defence line, they were rewarded by scoring a goal, with only 5 minutes to play Cranbrook gave everything they got with Tim Messenger not delivering the message before the full time whistle went. Shout out to the shield for a great first game since the revelation of the 9D s.

8As and 8Bs - Barker V Cranbrook 10D The 10D soccer team had a great second game of the season against Waverley. Cranbrook scored the first goal of the game, kicked by Lachlan Kinnaird, which was a fantastic start to the match. Daniel Walters scored a strong penalty goal, which brought the score up to 2 all. Charlie Thaxter brought the score to 3-2 to Cranbrook after running up the side line and scoring an amazing goal. The score was 3 all after Waverley scored. There were only a few more minutes before the end of the match and the whole team pushed up the field and helped to score a goal, driven out by Tom Edwards. Our defence and position improved towards the end of the match. The team is becoming more cohesive and working together as a team. This brought the score to 4-3 to Cranbrook and winning the game. 9A The 9As played terrifically on the weekend and were rewarded with a 2-0 win against the very physical side of Waverly. They started quite shakily in the first half but the boys soon found their groove. Our defence was very strong against Waverly s, this helped the midfield get the ball up to strikers, after continual attack from our strikers, they finally pierced the Waverly defence with a great run from Grayson Samuels, who crossed the ball into Rory Steyn as he tapped it in to score the first goal of the season for the 9As. The boys started the second half well with some threatening plays and nice passes, which slipped past the Waverly defence frequently, and because of one of those balls a cheeky chip over the opposition goalkeeper s head by the centre striker Rory Steyn resulted in the second goal. After holding on till the end, all boys left the field with a massive grin on their faces. 9B The 9Bs had a slow first half and Waverley were able to score sending a dangerous long ball into the box. For the rest of the half there was not much action, except for one impressive run from Jordan Heiffer, who ran through 3-4 Waverley defenders but was just unable to get the shot off. In the second half the 9Bs were off to a bad start, conceding a second goal off a perfectly placed through ball that went past Cranbrook defenders and the Waverley striker was able to place the ball just past Carl Yan. That s when the 8As and 8Bs - Barker V Cranbrook 9Bs started a long comeback. Oliver Will made a great run on the right wing, creating a great cross for Joseph Fanuli to get the ball over the Waverley defender and sent it straight to the back post where Lucas Davis got a side foot volley that very slowly bounced into the goal. Almost straight away Ollie made a quick run up the right wing again and Joseph gave him a pass on the right of the box. This allowed Ollie to finish with a strong strike in the lower left corner. Not long after the 9Bs resurgence, Waverley made a physical counter attack and Ollie in the right position was tackled in the box and was awarded a penalty; Ollie scored the penalty sliding it under the keeper. In the middle of the half Waverley comeback with a goal of their own a shot just outside the box that took a lucky deflection. Soon after the 9Bs got a free kick in a lucky position at the edge of the box and a shot from Joseph was brought down by the keeper and then luckily Jack Shanahan was there to bury the shot and make the score 4-3. Finally with around 4 minutes to go the 9Bs get another free kick on the right corner of the box as Jordan gave a great cross brought down by Josh Davis who passes it off to Lucas who found the open shot to bury the goal and the game. The 9Bs won 5-3. The team never gave up and were able to comeback from a big deficit! 9D After the 9D s got defeated 7-0 to Barker last week, they had to have a hard week at training to improve performance and figure out different tactics. This obviously payed off as they won a 5-0 victory against Waverly. Kian Tavakoli scoring a hat trick and earning joint man-of-the-match Jae Kim because of his fantastic defensive efforts and saving the team from conceding numerous times. Andrew Wan put in a penalty into the top corner and Michael Aroney also scored a quick goal off a cross put into the box. Overall, the 9D s played a fantastic match and made a great comeback from their last match. 9E The 9E s were evenly matched against the opposition this week are were unlucky to go down by 1 goal. Waverly had some standout players who proved to be a tough competition and to the Cranbrook team played well. Archie Anderson scored his 1st goal in football and Jae Kim added another to his collection. The team is improving as the season progresses and we are looking forward to further improvement next week.

8As and 8Bs - Barker V Cranbrook

7A - Team photo 8A It was a tough game against a very strong and physical team. There were some chances in the first half but neither team couldn t convert them into goals. The second half was a little better but with about 7 minutes to go Waverly scored off a corner. They then scored again quickly to win 2-nil. This was a shame as it had been an even match right until the end. Thanks to Tomas Nemirovsky and Xavier Zuccon for stepping up and filling in for injured players. They were a great asset to the team. 2-nil loss 8B The B s started strong with a great goal by Max Hannam. This inspired the boys to play hard against a team that was strong. Alex Randall put in a fantastic header to make it 2-nill at half time. Unfortunately the second half was not as strong and Waverly were able to score two goals and draw the match. Thanks to Charles Turnbull for playing up and a great effort by Xavier and Tomas who played the two games. 2-2 draw. 8C Cranbrook started off with a few good chances on goal. We had George and Zac up front creating good chances, however Cranbrook was not able to score. There was a great effort from the defensive line with Evan, Julijs, Luca and Seamus. The Waverly team had a couple of good chances but the defenders held them off. In the second half the Waverly team started playing more aggressively so the Cranbrook team had to do the same. We had some great effort from both teams and George making a run with Daniel. The game ended on 0-0. It was a tense game for both teams. The 8Cs are still undefeated! 8D The 8Ds looked promising again this week with a majority of possession and some excellent passing through midfield. Cranbrook scored first 15 minutes in with James Na getting a beautiful 7A highlights - Cranbrook win vs Waverley ball past the keeper. Again, Jacky, Wales and James had several opportunities but they either went past the post or to the keeper. Early in the second half Waverley levelled with an excellent ball that sailed between goalie Alif s fingers and the bar. Cranbrook fought back - Wales made a great shot that bounced off the post, then James had a go but it went over the top. Unfortunately in the last 10 minutes Waverley scored another great goal from a breakaway bringing the score to 2-1. A small improvement in our last touch in front of goal will be the difference in future matches. 8E Although we couldn t maintain the score line from last week, the 8Es showed again how well they play together for such a newly formed team. Cranbrook took a while to settle into the game and Waverley scored early. Our passing and possession improved but we just couldn t get any shots on goal. Waverley helped us out by putting in an own goal but then scored again with an excellent ball in the top of the goal. Our play improved greatly in the second half. Waverley scored their third goal but Nick Burke came back with an excellent chip over the goalie s head. The defence held strong with some great work from Josh and also Sam in goals. Unfortunately we couldn t get any more past the keeper and the game finished at 3-2. 7A The 7As once again pulled off a thrilling victory against Waverley in the weekend s match. Early on Robert Fraser and Ethan Harris pulled off some powerful shots on goal but were stopped by a skilful keeper. In a tightly contested first half, it took a penalty shot outside of the box (via the boot of Robert Fraser) for Cranbrook to break the deadlock. Five minutes later, roles were reversed and Waverley equalised. In the second half, a free kick to Ryan Collins saw the second of Cranbrook s goals and despite some odd refereeing decisions, Robert put in another goal and sealed the match. Congratulations all around to the team- a great result from some hard-working players. 7B Despite facing an opposition that was fast and full of energy, Tao Sullivan knocked in Cranbrook s first goal within the first five

7A - Cranbrook win vs Waverley

Ethan Harris - 7A minutes of the match. Alex Van Vugt and Thomas Bailey both made good runs but had no success in scoring. Oliver Ferster continued with his run of exceptional saves but Waverley finally equalised after 15 minutes. Some direct, precise passing from Waverley saw another goal scored just before half time. In the second half Cranbrook was holding onto the ball for too long and thus minimised the number of opportunities to score. Theo Whittaker managed to chip over a fantastic goal but the opposition was too strong, answering with two goals of their own. Despite the loss, the 7Bs displayed a much improved work ethic that should continue throughout the season. 7C This was a high scoring adrenalin filled game. It started with a Cranbrook goal in the first 2 minutes by Hugo Moses. There was some excellent and creative play, by many of our players. Tony Jin scored a hat trick, including a solo run from half way culminating in a beautiful shot. Jermaine also scored a terrific goal after a break by him, pass to Hugo and back. Our defence was strong and there were many nail-biting moments for the enthusiastic supporters. A special thank you to Marcus Schuman who was the goal keeper from the 7Ds and played with the 7Cs also. 7A highlights - Cranbrook win vs Waverley 6A The boys began the match really well but unfortunately they couldn t find the net. Eventually the goals came from some excellent passing. The boys were up 2 0 at half time with an excellent goal from Gustav Soerensen and Jonah Kampos-Green. The 2nd half showed a team that was solid in defence and used the width of the field in attack. More goals came from Jonah 2, Will Shanahan, Conner Beris and Ed Bickerstaff from a build up from defence into attack. When you play as a team you look fantastic. Keep it up boys! 6B A pleasing team effort from the boys throughout the game. Every member of the team played well! Michael Younes Nakhle in the midfield played solidly as did Sam Davey who made some good runs. Dylan Keely and Damien Norris were solid in defence. Another excellent goal by Jack Bouvier kept us in the game. Boys we must remember to use the whole field and spread out. Well done! 7D The 7Ds were outclassed by a very capable Waverley team. However, there are plenty of positives we took from the game. We were able to hold our positions well and displayed some excellent ball skills. Our defence was strong, especially by Robert Patterson who delivered a man of the match performance. Everyone was very determined and committed to playing at their best. 7E We went down to a well drilled Waverley team in a close contest. Our one goal was scored by Will Karagiannis with a screamer of a shot. The coach was impressed by the accurate and frequent passing. In training, the team has been working on the structure of the team and maintaining position. This is developing rapidly and will lay the foundations for some strong performances in future games.

Code of conduct Players Play by the rules and in a spirit of good sportsmanship Play for the fun of it and not just to please parents and coaches. Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials or other players, deliberately fouling or provoking an opponent, and throwing equipment are neither acceptable nor permitted in any sport. Work hard both for yourself and your team. Your team s performance will benefit, so will you. Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of another player. Co-operate with your coach, team mates and opponents. Without them there would be no game. In the event of a player, or athlete being sent-off during a CAS fixture, it is the responsibility of that boy s Headmaster at his discretion to determine the penalty. It is generally understood among Headmasters, however, that the boy will serve at least one week s suspension from participating in the CAS competition. Parents Focus upon the boy s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the game. This assists the boy in setting realistic goals related to his ability by reducing emphasis on winning. Teach your son that an honest effort is as important as victory, so that the result of the game is accepted without undue disappointment. Encourage your always to play according to the rules of the game. Never ridicule or yell at your son or another boy for making a mistake or losing a game. Remember boys are involved in organised sports for their benefit and enjoyment, not yours. Remember that children learn best from example. Applaud good play by both teams. If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the appropriate channels rather than question the official s judgement and honesty in public. Remember most officials give their time and effort voluntarily for your son s benefit. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities. Recognise the value and importance of coaches. They give of their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your son and other boys and deserve your support. Spectators We encourage boys to support their school teams and to be dressed in the school s uniform while doing so. We expect barracking to be enthusiastic but not to be fanatical or designed to heckle or belittle or disturb the opponents. For example, barracking, for or against, during a kick at goal is always bad sportsmanship. Boys should be encouraged to barrack for their school rather than for an individual team member. Booing, whistling, playing or beating musical instruments are in bad taste and wholly unacceptable. Vocal support for any team should never encourage violence or rough or illegal play. Encroaching onto the field of play, the shouting out of suggestions for players, referees or umpires to hear are not allowed. It is never acceptable to express disapproval of a referee s or umpire s decision no matter whether the referee be adult or schoolboy. There is a complete ban on all alcoholic drinks at grounds where games between Associated Schools teams are being played. We expect our players to be modest in success and generous in defeat, not showing in either case undue emotion. Good play, by our own school and by the opposing school, should be applauded willingly and openly. At all times spectators should leave the area tidy and free of rubbish when they leave. We look to adults (parents, Old Boys and other spectators) to set an example by their self-control at matches.

CFC Committee Members Looking for more parent involvement!! Each month a group of parents meet to discuss ways in which the Cranbrook Football Supporters Club can assist the school in growing the sport. No need to have any football knowledge or experience, just a love of Cranbrook and a desire to get involved. Email Michael Swibel at MSwibel@scentregroup.com Training & Fixtures Cancellations On days where there is poor weather, please call the Senior School wet weather line on 9294 5089. If further fixtures are cancelled then the recorded message is updated at 11am. For before or after school training the wet weather line will be updated by 6am for morning training sessions and by 2pm for after school training. All efforts will be made to find alternate arrangements in case of inclement weather.
