RHP James Shields is scheduled to start for the Sox, who are trying to avoid falling a season-high 32 games under.500. The Sox opened the homestand by losing two of three vs. Toronto, including a 7-4 defeat in Sunday's deciding game. Chicago owns the third-worst record in MLB ahead of Kansas City (32-73,.305) and Baltimore (32-74,.302). Following this series vs. the Royals, Chicago will take a brief three-game, weekend trip to Tampa Bay (8/3-5) before returning to Guaranteed Rate Field for a six-day, seven-game homestand vs. the Yankees (8/6-8) and Cleveland (8/10-12). The White Sox went 3-4 on their last trip from 7/20-26 at Seattle (1-2) and the Angels (2-2) and 3-2 on their last homestand vs. St. Louis (1-1) and the Royals (2-1) from 7/10-15. TONIGHT'S STORYLINES Chicago has won four of the last seven games, seven of the last 12 and eight of 14 at Guaranteed Rate Field the White Sox have scored 80 runs (5.7 R/G) during the 14-game span. The Sox have lost three of the last fi ve games vs. Kansas City after starting the season series on a fi ve-game winning streak. Chicago starters own a 7.63 ERA (37 ER/43.2 IP) with 14 homers allowed in the last eight games by contrast, the group surrendered just one earned run in the previous three contests. James Shields has allowed three earned runs or less in each of his last nine home starts, going 3-3 with a 2.58 ERA (17 ER/59.1 IP),.195 opponents average, 1.01 WHIP and eight quality starts. José Abreu is 11-32 (.344) with three home runs, seven RBI, and a 1.088 OPS in his last eight games (hit safely in seven). DEADLINE DEAL Chicago has acquired LHP Hunter Schryver from Tampa Bay in exchange for international signing bonus pool money. Schryver is 1-3 with a 2.40 ERA (13 ER/48.2 IP), nine saves, 59 strikeouts, a 1.07 WHIP and.212 average in 31 appearances (one start) between Class A Bowling Green and Class A Charlotte. ROSTER MOVES The White Sox today released RHP Chris Volstad he was designated for assignment on 7/27. SUNDAY'S RECAP Toronto scored fi ve runs in the ninth inning, including Brandon Drury's game-winning, two-run double off Jeanmar Gomez, as Toronto recorded a 7-4, comeback victory over Chicago. The White Sox led 3-2 entering the ninth but Teoscar Hernandez hit a game-tying solo homer off Jace Fry. The Sox scored a run in the fi fth, sixth and seventh, including a RBI single by Matt Davidson and solo homer by Omar Narváez. Carlos Rodón received a ND despite allowing two runs on fi ve hits with one walk and six strikeouts in 7.2 IP, marking his fourth straight QS Fry suffered his fi rst blown save and second loss. Daniel Palka homered in the ninth, his 15th of 2018 Narváez fell a double shy of the cycle the Sox were 1-11 with RISP. RODÓN ON A ROLL Carlos Rodón on Sunday made his fourth straight QS, tied for the longest streak on the club in 2018 he has allowed fi ve hits or less in all four, and worked at least 7.1 IP in the last three. He has allowed two earned runs or less in seven of his nine outings in 2018 and is limiting opponents to a.193 mark (41-212). Rodón is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA (6 ER/28.0 IP) and 20 strikeouts in four home starts this season (three quality starts). 35TH AND SHIELDS James Shields has allowed three earned runs or less in each of his last nine home starts, going 3-3 with a 2.58 ERA (17 ER/59.1 IP), 1.01 WHIP, 1.95 average and 47 strikeouts (eight QS). Has has worked 7.0-plus IP fi ve times, allowed three runs or less six times and surrendered fi ve or fewer hits six times. Shields is receiving a 3.08 run support average (18 RS) during the eight-start span the White Sox have scored zero runs four times, one run once and fi ve or more three times. CEASE AND DESIST Class AA Birmingam RHP Dylan Cease last night extended his scoreless IP streak to 17.0 at Mississippi he received a ND despite allowing just fi ve hits with seven strikeouts in 6.0 IP. Cease is 2-0 with a 2.34 ERA (9 ER/34.2 IP), 49 strikeouts and a.195 opp. average (24-123) in six starts with Birmingham. He has allowed one run or less in four of his fi ve July outings, and is limiting righties to a.179 mark (12-67) with the Barons. WHITE SOX VS. KANSAS CITY The White Sox lead the season series, 7-3, going 2-1 at Guaranteed Rate Field and 5-2 at Kauffman Stadium Chicago owns a 64-39 edge in runs scored this season. The Sox are hitting.295/.358/.540 with 21 home runs, and own a 3.20 ERA (32 ER/90.0 IP) and fi ve quality starts. Chicago is 17-12 vs. Kansas City since 2017 after going 40-72 from 2011-16 (19-39 at home). The White Sox are 8-4 over the last 12 games at Guaranteed Rate Field but just 15-16 since 2015. The Sox lead the all-time series, 392-375 they are 216-171 at home (124-101 at Guaranteed Rate Field) and 176-204 on the road (165-182 at Kauffman Stadium). LOOKING FOR CENTRAL COMMAND The White Sox are 15-26 against the American League Central in 2018, going 7-13 at home and 8-13 on the road. Chicago is 4-9 over its last 13 games, 8-16 in the last 24 and 9-20 in the last 29 the club has scored three runs or less 16 times during the 29-game span the Sox are 4-6 in the last 10 and 6-10 in the last 16 contests at Guaranteed Rate Field. The Sox are 306-403 vs. the AL Central since 2009, posting a losing record every season except 2012 (37-35). MAJOR MINOR MENTIONS Below is a breakdown of notable White Sox prospects: Class AAA Charlotte OF Eloy Jiménez has hit safely in 16 of last 17 games, going 30-64 (.469) with eight doubles, fi ve HRs and 14 RBI. Jiménez is hitting.396/.443/.729 with eight doubles, eight home runs, 17 RBI and a 1.173 OPS in 26 games with the Knights this season. Class A Winston-Salem OF Blake Rutherford is batting.333 (18-54) with two doubles and six RBI in his last 13 games he hit safely in 12 straight from 7/16-28, tied for ninth-longest in the Carolina League. Rutherford ranks among the Carolina League leaders in hits (2nd, 108), RBI (2nd, 66), triples (3rd, 6) and average (4th,.306). Class A Kannapolis INF Nick Madrigal has hit safely in nine of his 11 games with the Intimidators (.375, 15-40; 3 2B, 6 RBI, 2 SO). PILING UP CROOKED NUMBERS Yoán Moncada has recorded 19 doubles, fi ve triples, 13 home runs and 43 RBI in 97 games this season. He joins Javier Báez, Cody Bellinger, Andrew Benintendi, Corey Dickerson, Teoscar Hernández, Jurickson Profar, Trevor Story and Chris Taylor as the only MLB players to record 15+ 2B/5+ 3B/10+ HR/40+ RBI this season. STOLEN BASE STOLEN BASE! Tim Anderson (21), Adam Engel (11), Leury García (11), Yoán Moncada (11) and Yolmer Sánchez (10) have all stolen 10 or more bases for the White Sox this season. The Sox are the only team in MLB this season with fi ve players to record double-digits in stolen bases the last time fi ve or more Chicago players recorded 10-plus stolen bases was 2005 (Dye, Harris, Iguchi, Ozuna, Podsednik, Rowand). Chicago ranks fourth in MLB with 76 steals in 2018. "X" MARKS THE SPOT Xavier Cedeño has not allowed a run in 17 of his 19 games this season (11 of his outings have been hitless) opponents are hitting just.154 (8-52) in 2018 (righties are 3-24,.125). Cedeño has allowed just three of 13 (23.1 percent) inherited runners to score, and fi rst batters faced are 2-17 (.118). POWER AND SPEED Tim Anderson (14 HR/career-high 21 SB) is one of five players in MLB this season with 14-plus homers and 20-plus steals (also Mookie Betts, Starling Marte, José Ramírez and Mike Trout). Anderson is on pace for 22 homers and 32 steals in 2018 he is looking to become the third White Sox to record a 20+ HR/30+ SB season, joining Alex Rios (2010) and Tommie Agee (1966). BARRELING BACKSTOPS Omar Narváez and Kevan Smith are hitting a combined.341 (66-189) with nine doubles, four home runs, 28 RBI and 21 multihit efforts in 54 games since 6/1 (hit safely in 43 contests). Narváez (1st,.391) and Smith (2nd,.309) lead all MLB catchers in average since 6/1 (minimum 95 plate appearances). Narváez owns 13 multihit efforts and has hit safely in 21 games since 6/1 Smith has hit safely in 22 of his 26 games in 2018 since being recalled from Class AAA Charlotte on 6/5. Narváez is 13-39 (.410) with two doubles, three home runs, nine RBI and a 1.183 OPS over his last 11 games.
