A GLOBAL MOVEMENT SYMPOSIUM, MATOSINHOS, 3 RD JUNE 2018
AN INVESTMENT INTO OUR FUTURE Basketball for 5 12 year old girls and boys plays a crucial role in attracting children to our sport. At that age kids often have their first contact with sport and particularly team sport. FIBA had supported Mini Basketball initiatives since 30 years ago, but its development had been rather in the margin of most of its National Federations youth activities. Basketball is losing ground to initiatives of other sports and leisure time opportunities for families. FIBA, through its foundation, wishes to invest in this movement and our future. 2
GLOBAL THE OBJECTIVES Promote and stimulate playful grassroots basketball for 5 12- year-old of both gender (in line with FIBA strategy) Provide guidance and create revenue opportunities for members (NF s) and stakeholders (schools, clubs) Use basketball for good activities for kids and parents adjusted to local needs Support and create local structures (teachers, school programs, festivals) Out of scope: Elite basketball Competition basketball International events 3
GLOBAL IN LINE WITH FIBA STRATEGY 4
GLOBAL NO ONE FITS ALL APPROACH Many members are very active, but have different approaches. Should we regulate the movement? Here are the arguments: Pro Age specifics are same (physical abilities, playful, equipment) Communication and branding Objectives are valid globally Contra FIBA does not promote international events Different school and educational systems in different countries Different age groups in different countries Different concepts and teaching methods in different countries Different Cultures (gender mix activities not possible everywhere) Conclusion We support different approaches and concepts in each region and country, but certain aspects should be coordinated and recommended: Equipment recommendations (for example ball) Communication and Branding Objectives and approach 5
GLOBAL CONCEPT OF ACTIVITY We would like to combine a sports activity (festival, jamboree) with an educational initiative (symposium) at least 1 x per year in one country in each region. Through the symposium we hope to ensure legacy of the project and to stimulate the movement in countries that had few activities so far. Festival National (local) event(s) with critical mass across both genders Leisure activities with all stakeholders (kids, parents, teachers) Basketball for good educational activities (ecology? health?) Symposium Intl convention with experts from Region (knowledge transfer, best practice) Principles and Philosophy (code of ethics for stakeholders, playful approach) Formation of educators and mentors ( toolkit and certificate) IBF will invite representatives from the NF s in the region to participate in the event. Those would be responsible to boost the movement within their country. 6
GLOBAL - BRANDING The movement is very diverse in using names (Mini Basketball, Mini Basket, Mini Ball, Baby Basket, Aussie Hoops) and technical terms (coach, teacher, educator, mentor, festival, jamboree) as well as visual identities. We have developed a new identity in order to build a brand that could be attractive to partners and would offer to all stakeholders its use for a common approach. 7
GLOBAL ROAD MAP June 2018: IBF sends letters to all National Federations in each region inviting them to send an expert to the upcoming regional event.
