News from THE TURTLE POINT YACHT & COUNTRY CLUB JULY 2012 MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT Charles Crow Club President As I write this article it is, without a doubt, summertime in Alabama and I hope that you are taking advantage of all our Club has to offer while it is at its absolute peak use period for your enjoyment. As you read this month s newsletter please note all the events available to you on the Club calendar, highlighted by the annual Fourth of July Picnic and the W.C. Handy events. July is truly Prime-Time at Turtle Point, our family plans to enjoy the month and we hope to see you there! I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Mr. James Crocitto on board as our new Director of Food and Beverage. James brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our Club and I look forward to James, Chef Mark, Althea and our Food and Beverage Staff working together to further enhance the quality of dining and service that you should expect from your Club. On a sad note I have to report to you that we are losing one of the main stays of our wait staff. Vanessa Goodloe s mother has health problems and Vanessa has resigned her position on the staff in order to relocate her family to Houston, Texas to help care for her. Vanessa has been on our staff for 7 years and we wish her the best as she leaves us and begins her new life. We will miss her bright smile, can-do attitude and all those different hair styles that she sported around the clubhouse! Remember, it is summertime and the living should be easy, hope to see you at the Club! FROM THE MANAGER Bill Colloredo General Manager I would like to welcome to the Turtle Point Management Staff, James Crocitto our new Director of Food and Beverage. James is originally from California and most recently held a similar position at a club in South Carolina. James will be working with us to enhance our entire Food and Beverage operation. Welcome to Turtle Point James! Our long time server Vanessa Goodloe is leaving us to take care of her mother in Texas. In my short time here, I saw that she was a valuable member of the staff and always worked with a smile on her face and loved taking care of our members. I wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors. July at Turtle Point is packed with fun activities for the entire family. Join us on July 4th for our Patriotic Independence Day Celebration. Our picnic will be from 4pm-8pm featuring Chef Mark s Southern Barbecue. Turtle Point s own Harvey Thompson and his band will be performing near the pool from 4 8 PM. The pool will be open from 10am-8pm, and we will have inflatable jumpers for the children. In addition to regular golf course play you can choose to participate in our Annual Robbins Cup Golf Tournament. Call the Golf Shop for details. On Friday night, July 20th, Turtle Point pays tribute to WC Handy and we kick-off our Annual Boaters weekend with a special Friday night Family Buffet featuring music by The Decoys for the entire family to enjoy. Finishing our tribute to WC Handy we will have a Handy Festival Jazz Brunch on Sunday, July 29th with entertainment by the Ray Reach Trio. Make plans to join us for all the fun! Please call Tricia to make your reservations. As always, please feel free to call or email me if I can help you in any way. (256-757-2153) (billc@tpycc.org) Thank you for supporting your club. I hope to see you soon and often.

Mike Claiborne USPTA Tennis Professional CARDIO & PASTA NIGHT It is very satisfying to come up with an idea that really takes off and becomes a winner. We started in late May offering family cardio for $5 per individual on Wednesday evenings from 6-7. We had 12 participants the first outing, 18 the second and an impressive 31 the third outing. On June 6th we had 9 Pee Wees on center court and 22 adults and older children on the other courts. What a blast, with great energy at the club. Going forward, Family Cardio is scheduled for July 11th and the 25th. This fun exercise class to music is for everyone. Give it a try! TENNIS NEWS SHOALS JUNIOR CIRCUIT Turtle Point hosted two of the early tournaments June 2nd and the 23rd. All of the events are averaging 70-80 juniors. Here is the remaining schedule: July 7th (Cypress Lakes), July 14th (Courthouse), July 21st (Turtle Point Doubles), July 28th (Cox Creek), August 4th (UNA) and finally The Masters event here at Turtle Point August 11th. ADULT & JUNIOR JULY 4TH MIXERS The adults are set from 9-11:30 am and the junioirs 1-3 that afternoon. The mixers are intentionally short in duration so you can get some tennis in and then spend time with family and friends. Call or stop by to sign up. SUMMER LEAGUES The men play on Monday s at 6 pm and the ladies in Thursday s at the same time. Be sure to let us know when you are in town and would like to play. SUMMER CAMPS We have had very strong participation in our camps to date. The first Grand Slam Camp had a whopping 25 juniors going all day from 9-5. By Thursday 5 pm they were all tired (and the staff as well) but all were better tennis players and had a great time. There are 4 more camps left. Turtle Camps scheduled for the weeks of July 2nd, July 9th and July 30th. Additionally, one more Grand Slam the week of July 16th. Call to sign up. Understanding the Value of Competitive Match Pressure One of the biggest hurdles Zack and I are trying to overcome is lack of match play by our juniors. We think private lessons, camps and group lessons are great but there is no substitute for match play between lessons. Jorge Capestany is a USPTA Master Professional from the Midwest. I have heard him speak at several conventions and he is one of the best. Consider the following article from him: After 23 years as a teaching professional, I can see a distinct shift in players attitudes towards competition and playing matches. Like most teaching pros today, I came from an era where the way juniors reached the highest levels was to play sets.lots of sets. Taking private lessons and even group lessons were the exception, not the norm. I remember that when we did do a drill, we were always pestering the pros asking when are we gonna play. Almost everyone I knew growing up had the same attitude and wanted to play more than we wanted to just drill or hit. Fast forward to the present and virtually all of my students seem just the opposite. Today s junior players all want to be in group lessons (some up to 3 times a week) and they all want to take private lessons, but no one wants to play any matches. Tournament play is even a tougher sell to today s junior player. As I speak with my fellow pros and friends from around the country, they all relay a similar story. The unfortunate consequences are that at many clubs we are creating an army of players that can strike the ball well, but do not know how to compete or win. Todd Scarborough Commodore GREETINGS FROM THE BRIDGE As I write this letter the temperature outside is 100 degrees. It is officially summer time in North Alabama and that means that boating is in full swing at Turtle Point. Our new docks are packed on the weekends so get your boat out and enjoy the lake with friends and family. A few marina and harbor housekeeping notes, we have had several complaints of boaters not observing our no-wake rule for the harbor. Always remember that any damage that your wake may cause is your financial responsibility. Also, we have had several calls concerning boaters parking in marina slips that are rented by other boaters. Please do not park your boat in a marina slip unless you are the renter of that slip. Thanks for helping us keep our harbor safe for everyone. July brings Handy Week to the Shoals and that means Cruisin and Bluesin for our boaters. The 20th and the 21st are going to be packed full of fantastic music and food so make your reservations today by calling the club at 256-757-2153. I hope to see you during the 2012 edition of Turtle Point s Boater s Weekend! Happy Boating!
