We use the Past Simple: for a completed action or event at a definite point in the past for actions and events that happened one after another with certain verbs that are not used in continuous tenses (like, love, hate, believe, know, want etc.)

Past Continuous was/ were + verb+ ing We use the Past Continuous: to describe an action lasting for some time or serving as the background to other events. We use the Past Simple: to describe a shorter action or event that happened during the longer action or interrupted it.

We were having dinner when the phone rang. (action already in progress) While I was cooking, the children were playing in the garden. (at the same time) Yesterday at 4 o clock Chris was playing football. (emphasising progress)
