Our May General Membership Meeting will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 16 th. There are several (member submitted) by-law proposals in the Spreader concerning oversight of the Board of Directors by the Board of Advisors. Your current Board of Directors, Anne Geisel, Commodore; Mike Pederson, Vice Commodore; Debbie Belger, Secretary; Rick Zern, Fleet Captain; and Paul Barrett, Treasurer are proposing that Operational Procedures would be the proper way to address any accountability issues. We are not in favor of the proposed by-law changes. We will also be happy to address your questions. Please read these proposals so we can make any clarifications as simple and concise as possible. - Anne General Membership Meeting Thursday May 16th, 7:00 PM May 2013 Fleet Captain s Report April was an incredibly busy month at PBYC; we had our Gumbo Cook-off on the first weekend which crowned Kirk Newkirk as the Gumbo King once again (although he was closely followed by Margo Zern in the voting results). A group of PBYC Multihull sailors traveled to Ocean Springs, Mississippi for the Hobie National Championships and took 4 of the top seven places in the Wave Class! Tom Whitehurst won this event with Mike Pedersen (tied for 3rd) in 4th, Kirk Newkirk in 6th and Andrea Pedersen in 7TH. An awesome performance by PBYC Sailors! Bob Patroni and crew on Serge's Disciples won the Navy Yacht Club Commodores Cup event on April 13, 2013. We held our annual Preemie Cup regatta on April 20th which crowned Mike Pedersen as the Wave Champ for this event. The Doublehanded Class Champs saw Dave and LeAyn Dunbar win the Spin Class with Jeff Hunt and Karen Kriegel in second Place. Paul and Rachael Gillette won the non-spin Class and D'Arsey & Rick Samuels taking second in this breezy race. Janis Wilson won the MVP award for all of her efforts in administering this event on PBYC's behalf. We hosted the 2013 Trimaran Nationals here at PBYC. PRO Bert Rice and Janis Wilson did a superb job with getting this event off the ground on the way to a successful regatta. PBYC sailor & immediate past commodore, DJ (David Johnson) was on the winning boat with Randy Smyth of FWYC. Dave & LeAyn Dunbar, JP Calais, Lisa Sharp, Margo Zern, Josh Word, Bud & Terri Schumann and Mike & Andrea Pedersen all served on the RC for this event. Andrea Pedersen was voted MVP for this regatta due to her efforts on race scoring, regatta management and social event management & facilitation. We had our first Moonlight Madness race on April 26; the winds were light and the race to #145 was long but fun and the moon rise was beautiful. Atlantic Union won, with Triptonyte in 2nd closely followed by My Sharona. May is going to be even busier. A PBYC board member will travel to Pass Christian Mississippi to attend the Annual Opening meeting of the GYA and will report back to the club. (continue on next page)

Our Challenge Cup team will have a Nautical Flea market Fund raiser on May 4th; wait for more info to come in a blast later this week. Our Annual Sea Buoy race will be sailed on May 11. Tom & Debbie Belger along with Kim & Julie Connerley will run this regatta for the racers. On May 18 we have the Navy Cup and our Vice Commodore, Mike Pedersen is the Team Captain for this event. We need ALL PBYC sailors to compete with their boats in a variety of classes so we can defend our title. On May 25 we will hold our annual Memorial day Race & Raft up. This year we will have a special treat in that we will have our Full Moon Race on the way back from Opal Beach. Stay tuned for more info on this. - RZ PBYC Garage Sale Saturday, May 4th 8 - noon To help your Challenge Cup sailors get their boats prepared and delivered to Gulfport. Membership Report Accepted New Members Kyle Gamble - Junior Member Pensacola, FL Pat Jackson - Returning Member Gulf Breeze, FL Ann Killough Gulf Breeze, FL Annual Membership renewal letters will go out at the end of May. Hey Sailors! We now have a newly designated sailboat launching area on Pensacola Beach. At the January Santa Rosa Island Authority (SRIA) meeting, I presented before the board and made the request to designate, complete with signage, a non-motorized boat launch area at the Pickens Gate parking lot sound-side. I made this request to alleviate the congestion at the Quietwater Beach boat ramp, and to separate motorized vessels from nonmotorized vessels for safety purposes. I am happy to announce that as of March, the SRIA has adopted my proposal. They have cut out a section of the fence at Pickens Gate parking lot, installed signs stating: Non-Motorized Vessel Access, and Non-Motorized Vehicle Access. The SRIA has also designated parking for the same. Please help spread the word, so that we can keep this dedicated area through steady and continued usage. We are using the area for a new Girl Scout Sailing program I have started. Come join us sailing! Chuck Beverly Page 2

2013 Trimaran National Championship The 2013 Trimaran National Championships were sailed on Pensacola Bay and the Santa Rosa Sound on April 26-28. Fifteen competitors from across the eastern US and Canada competed in 'Chamber of Commerce' conditions in typical Northwest Florida spring weather patterns. Pensacola Beach Yacht Club hosted this years event which typically travels between Fort Walton Yacht Club & Pensacola Yacht Club on alternate years. Friday's Race event on Santa Rosa Sound 14 miles east to Juana's Pagoda in Navarre Beach was started in 15 knot easterly winds which had the fleet beating the entire way. The competitors enjoyed a laid-back lunch and camaraderie with host Ken Rudski at Juana's Pagoda and the Sailors Grill on Navarre beach and then prepared to sail back to Pensacola Beach. The race back was sailed in 10-14 knot ESE winds with the competitors enjoying double digit boats speeds for the majority of the way back. Saturdays morning's "Steeple Chase' race started in 15K winds. The fleet enjoyed a 2.5 mile beat, a 4.5 mile run, a 3 mile fire hose reach and then a 4 mile close reach back to a beach lunch at Fort Pickens gate. Saturday afternoon buoy races were sailed in slowly decreasing winds. Sunday races were again sailed in 'picture perfect' conditions even though the weather was forecast to decay throughout the day. The series consisted of a total 8 races; 3 distance courses and 5 windward-leeward courses. Perennial multihull champion, Randy Smyth of Fort Walton Beach, FL, with crew David (DJ) Johnson and Joe Bellows crewing took line honors in each race and won the Farrier / PHRF Class. Jim Leonard of Birmingham, AL won the WETA class overall followed by Mike Meade of Pensacola, FL and then followed by Dick Hichcock from the Midwest. Rounding out the Top 5 in the Farrier / PHRF Class after Smyth was Mike Parsons and Kevin Blank of New Orleans, LA in a F24MkII in second. Bod Hodges of Covington, LA on a Corsair Sprint 750 and US Olympic Team boat-wright, Donny Brennan and son Drew in third. David Saint of Tallahassee, FL and Don Wigston finished 4th in Fleet on a Corsair Sprint 750. Rounding out the top 5 was Jim Chambers, Dean Holcomb and Linda Baker of Lake Lanier Sailing Club in Flowery Branch, GA. Other awards that were received included the "Furtherst Distance Traveled" award this went to Jim MacKenzie from Toronto, Ontario in his beautiful, new Farrier 22 which, by the way, finished 6th in fleet. Mike Parsons and Kevin Blank on Little Wing, won the Windcraft Amateur Award for the "Best Finishing Amateur" team. Randy Smyth, David (DJ) Johnson and Joe Bellows on 'YO', a F-25C won the Farrier Trophy for first overall. The regatta's MVP award went to Andrea Pedersen for her stupendous efforts on race committee with race administration, scoring and after race parties and activities. (continued on next column) The RC, the regatta support folks and staff at Pensacola Beach Yacht Club facilitated a wonderful event that featured tight competition and great camaraderie at the social events throughout the weekend. Sponsors for this event included The Smyth Team, Schurr Sails, Key Sailing and Zern Rigging. - RZ General Membership Meeting Thursday May 16th, 7:00 PM Page 3
