COMMONWEALTH ROWING BEACH SPRINTS CHAMPIONSHIPS Sandbanks Beach, Poole, England: 17-18 August 2018 SCOTLAND TEAM: SELECTION POLICY & STRATEGY 1. Objective To select individuals who can perform with distinction in a FISA Beach Sprint format as an individual and crew sculler. Promotion of Beach Sprint Events 2. The Event Maximum Team Size: 6 in the team: 2 men and 2 women rowers plus 2 rowing reserves who will be in the team as boat holders and coxswain Team Requirements: Maximum rowers: 2 Men and 2 Women Plus 2 boat holders one of whom will cox the mixed coxed 4x. The boat holders will be rowing reserves for the team. 3. The Course The Rules of Racing for Beach Sprint are available on the World Rowing Website in Appendix 23. The race starts with a sprint on the beach of between 10 and 50 m for the rower or one of the rowers. They then enter the boat and the boat slaloms around three buoys over a 250m course, and, for this event, will row straight back to the beach before one of the rowers exists the boat and runs to the finish line. 4. Standard 4.1 To be selected an individual must: - a) Demonstrate an ability to run on sand, enter and exit a boat efficiently, negotiate the surf effectively and maintain boat speed and direction while slaloming around a series of buoys. b) Demonstrate their ability to combine effectively into mixed crews for the Coastal 4x. 4.2 The selection process will be run with the aim of selecting a team that can be competitive in this event. 5. Eligibility 5.1 The rules on eligibility are found in Article 25(2) of the Commonwealth Games Federation's Constitution (Appendix 1). a) General Rule Competitors must be citizens or subjects of a Commonwealth country and may represent: - i) The Commonwealth country of birth; OR ii) The Commonwealth country in which he/she has resided for the five years immediately prior to the event b) British Isles Special rules apply to the British Isles. Competitors born in the British Isles and who have resided there for a minimum of 5 years prior to the Games may represent: - i) The Commonwealth country of birth; OR ii) The Commonwealth country of birth of his/her father or mother (as long as that country is within the British Isles); OR iii) The Commonwealth country of residence.

c) Representing Different Countries A competitor may represent a different country at subsequent Games with the approval of the Commonwealth Games Federation and the permission of the Commonwealth Games Associations of the two countries concerned. 5.2 All Competitors must comply with the World Anti-Doping Agency standards, policies and procedures. Competitors will be subject to random Anti-Doping tests at the 2018 Commonwealth Rowing Beach Sprint Championships. 5.3 A rower will not be selected to race at the Commonwealth Rowing Beach Sprint Championships if they are in contention for the 2018 World Rowing Championships Team. SELECTION STRATEGY 6. Process 6.1 Rowers wishing to be considered for the Scotland Team should register themselves using the attached form, which should be returned to Adam Hardy in the Scottish Rowing office by 31st May 2018. Late registrations will not be accepted. 6.2 All rowers seeking selection must post an ergometer and running test as a minimum standard to be considered. See section 8. 6.3 Priority in the final team line up will be decided on a combination of 1x sculling speed along with 2x sculling performances. The cox and boat holder will be identified from the competing rowers as they may be used as substitutes in the case of illness or injury. 6.4 Coaches who wish to be included in the identification and preparation of the Commonwealth Rowing Beach Sprint Team are invited to nominate themselves by 31st May 2018 on the attached form. 6.5 A Selection day will be held on the 17 th June - venue tbc. 7. Funding 7.1 Selected rowers will be required to pay for their own costs, including travel and accommodation. The event costs are estimated at 850 plus travel.

8. Ergometer Test 8.1 Take the ergometer outside and once on the ground. Measure out 60 meters from the middle of the front leg on the ergometer. The process is shown on the video which can be found HERE. 8.2 Ensure you have a time keeper who records your overall time and your 500m ergo time.

APPENDIX 1 Eligibility COMMONWEALTH REGATTA 2018 Commonwealth Games Federation Constitution 1. Subject to Article 25(2), as a condition of entry to compete in the Commonwealth Games, all competitors must be citizens or subjects of the Commonwealth Country that enters them and must: (a) not be currently under disqualification or suspension by the Federation, or their respective Affiliated Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) or International Federation (IF) or under the World Anti-Doping Code; (b) comply with all applicable rules and regulations of the Federation, their respective IFs and the World Anti-Doping Code as may be modified and applied by the Federation to ensure that the overriding principles of the Commonwealth Games are observed. 2. Subject to Article 25(3), where an athlete was born in a Commonwealth Country that has common citizenship/passport with other Commonwealth Countries, the competitor may initially represent either the competitor s Commonwealth Country of birth; or the Commonwealth Country of birth of his or her father or mother that shares the same citizenship/passport. 3. After having represented one Commonwealth Country at the Commonwealth Games, a competitor may not represent another Commonwealth Country unless he or she receives the approval of the Federation, the relevant IF and the affiliated CGAs of the two Commonwealth Countries concerned. Applications under this article must be submitted to the Executive Board at least 12 months prior to the commencement of the Games. 4. It is the responsibility of all affiliated CGAs to ensure that their athletes are fully aware of and comply with the eligibility rules of the Federation. 5. The Executive Board will have the power to waive the provisions of Articles 25 (1-3) in its discretion. In relation to this clause, the CGF Executive Board at its meeting in August 2004 gave the following guidelines: If an athlete has previously represented a country at a Commonwealth Games they may continue to represent that country at future Games. Athletes wishing to compete for a country on the basis of residency must show they have resided in that country for five years immediately prior to those Games. Further guidelines were given in August 2005 as follows:

Athlete Eligibility - Athlete Dispensation Criteria The General Assembly noted the Executive Board s decision that in accordance with Article 24 (5) dispensations would be granted to athletes where common passports exist in that an athlete may represent the new country subject to having fulfilled all the requirements of the relevant International Federation.
