FEATURE STORY SEABL s Ben Allen Plying his Trade as U20 s Coach Before he embarks on another SEABL season, Ben Allen has devoted this week to the Under-20 s and Ivor Burge Championships where he is an assistant coach for the ACT Under-20 s Men s side. The centre is no stranger to the Junior Championships, achieving the highest success with Victoria Metro in the Under-16 s and the Under- 18 s as a bottom and top-ager before finishing with a fourth title in the Under-20 s for Victoria. I grew up playing for Victoria and only lost one game across five years so it was a great time, said Allen. His junior career was brought to a premature end though, as a stress fracture in his foot forced him to miss his final year as a top-ager in the Under-20 s. This year provided a chance for Allen to atone for that missed opportunity but his success as a player has unfortunately not been transferred to ACT as they finished the group matches with a 1-5 record. However, the team has performed admirably under Allen and head coach Jerry Lee, showcasing a tenacity and hunger for the ball that Allen is also known for in SEABL. It has also been a vital learning experience for Allen himself as he becomes accustomed to the game through a coach s perspective. It s my first time coaching at a nationals and it s great to learn from Jerry Lee. With the start of the 2016 SEABL season just over a month away, Allen has rejoined the Gunners for a couple of training sessions as the team begins to come together. Davidson, an ex-nbl star, is also the current National Shooting Coach for the Australian Boomers while Faithful comes via Wofford College in South Carolina. Rice is an experienced centre who will directly help alleviate the pressure on Allen who was the team s best rebounder and second best scorer last season. Success seemed to be following Allen after his Junior Championship days, as he reached the SEABL Grand Final in two consecutive seasons with the Mt. Gambier Pioneers, taking the title in 2014. His performances in the clutch also became legendary, nailing two buzzer beater three-pointers in the 2013 and 2014 Semi-Final to help carry the Pioneers into the Championship game. A move to the Gunners last year could not replicate that success though, with Canberra finishing last in their Conference and missing the playoffs for the eighth straight year. Allen s season was just as consistent, averaging a double-double for the third consecutive season while shooting at 44% from the field and 38% from the three-point line. It is his ability to combine a low-post game with outside shooting that makes him one of the deadliest centres in the league and the early signs at training have Allen positive about the Gunners 2016 prospects. The 2016 SEABL season begins on April 1 while the Under-20 and Ivor Burge Championships conclude Saturday evening. We have a new coach in Brad Davidson and we are always looking for more local talent. We have also signed (Sydney-born) Indiana Faithful and Andrew Rice is making his comeback for the Gunners. GAME REPORTS U20 Men WA 58 vs. ACT 66 Strong half-court defence, tough boards and quick transition from both teams saw the score even at the first break but the third term was all about WA as they forged ahead to take the lead 43-36 heading into the final term. ACT pulled themselves back into the contest though through their work on the boards and as they capitalised on the fast-break opportunities, pulled off the stunning comeback win. Ivor Burge Men NSW 75 vs. SA 79 After conceding the first two baskets, South Australia tightened their defence to lead by four at quarter-time. Their steals and consequent fast breaks were impressive while a high shooting clip gave them a 16-point advantage at the main break. NSW dug deep in the second half with their own defence lifting and inside the final five minutes, the scores were tied. Both sides traded baskets as the game went down to the wire but a timely three-pointer in the dying moments secured the big win for SA. U20 Women SA 80 vs. Vic White 72 South Australia hosted a block party early to give them the advantage but a time-out saw Vic White compose themselves and pull the deficit back to single figures. The game see-sawed in a similar way throughout the contest but SA never conceded enough points to fall behind, winning by eight points. U20 Men SA 64 v. Vic White 77 Vic White started strongly in the first quarter and pulled away to a lead but to SA s credit, they pegged back that advantage to just three at half-time. The third term was an arm wrestle as Vic White only increased their lead to four but with a dominance in the paint, they ran away to win the final quarter by nine. Ivor Burge Women New South Wales 107 vs. Victoria Country 22 NSW started the game with quick transition baskets and disciplined defence. That continued throughout the first half as VIC Country was unable to convert offensively or slow down NSW defensively although the game remained competitive throughout. Decimated by injuries, Vic Country could only field four players in the second half as Nicole Harris (26 points, 21 rebounds) and Brittany Anderson (20 points, 16 assists and 10 rebounds) dominated play.
GAME REPORTS Ivor Burge Women Vic Metro 91 vs. South Australia 25 Six players reached double-figures for Vic Metro as their stingy defence proved impenetrable for the South Australian players. A dominance on the boards was also critical in the win, led by Samantha Hough (25 points, 11 rebounds) although the SA Women ensured Vic Metro had to fight throughout the game. Ivor Burge Men Victoria Metro 93 vs. Victoria Country 40 Vic Metro came out with speed and domination, scoring quickly in transition to push the score out of reach early. Vic Country s tenacity never wavered as they started the second half with a man-to-man defence but their offensive struggles continued and they could not make a dent on the scoreboard. U20 Men Victoria Navy 99 vs. New South Wales 81 The game began with both teams trading baskets and the lead throughout the first half but NSW s quick hands and tenacious defence impressed. Turnovers proved an issue for them in the third period though and it was only a late charge that kept them in the contest going into the fourth. There, Jack White finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds while three momentum-changing blocks helped carry Vic Navy into the Grand Final. U20 Women Victoria Navy 98 vs. Queensland 66 QLD s defensive intensity stayed consistent throughout the first half, but Vic Navy s patience on offense and conversion on transition baskets was too much for QLD to handle. A move to a full-court press was pivotal in QLD winning the third quarter but unfortunately the damage had been done as Vic Navy secured the 32-point win.
