Have a close look at your Year Book for 2010 for changes. The ASW took part in a meeting with the Devon & Cornwall Constabulary in October. A number of procedural practices were agreed, including better PR in some instances. The police in those counties are concerned primarily with driving standards and adherence to the Highway Code. To that end the ASW intends appointing its own DSOs to all events in 2010. Registrations in all of our Championships (except one) in 2009 have fallen, which is a reflection of the experience of most championship organisers around the country. Whilst it is temporary and a sign of our economic situation extra efforts are being made to improve this in 2010. There were a fair few changes, amongst the Executive, made at the AGM. Barry Luxton (Treasurer), Peter Gibbons (Trials) and Rodger Harvey (FLO) all retired from their roles and I have to thank them for their efforts on the ASW s behalf. New blood has arrived in the form of Colin Goode (Treasurer), Chris House (FLO), Duncan Stephens (Sporting Trials), Brian Alexander (Car & Classic Trials), and Roger Nunn has replaced Alan Whitney in the role of Training Co-ordinator. Venue-wise it has been an active year. Many thanks must go to Darren Loveys who played a role in securing a limited amount of motorsport use of Smeatharpe Airfield, after a Noise Nuisance Abatement Order was served against the enthusiastic owner Lloyd Stevens by the local council. Darren was also able to use connections to resurrect Bovington for motorsport use again. South Hams are making efforts to re-open Portreath for Sprinting and possibly a Hillclimb too; the ASW has offered a modest amount of help to that end.

DECEMBER 2009 2009 saw the ASW active in many Inter Association competitions. We won the Autotest, Autocross & Sporting Trials competitions and so will host those events in 2010. We also took part in the Road Rally, Sprint & Car Trial competitions. In 2010 could all competitors in those disciplines make yourself a mental note to talk to your Co-ordinator about participation, we need the best teams to win these competitions and show everyone else what we already know, the best competitors are from the ASW region! Finally a plea from me about a sensitive issue. There was a disagreement between Weston super Mare Motor Club and the newly-formed club Rallysport West concerning the organization of a rally in Brean Leisure Park. The ASW intervened in an effort to broker an agreement upon a framework within which the two clubs could co-operate in the organization of the event, our efforts proved ultimately unsuccessful. The ASW wanted only two things; to preserve the venue and maintain an event, both for the benefit of motorsport and its competitors in the South West. Ultimately it was the landowner who decided who he was prepared to invite to organize an event in his Park. Now the plea, well more than one really. First and foremost if you make any contribution in any public forum, which we d prefer you didn t, please think about what it is you are saying and what impact that could have upon those without the love of motorsport we all have. Remember there are those who monitor such things and are only too pleased to see motorsport fighting itself and we have enough problems without members creating ammunition for outsiders to have a go at us. Secondly those that take part in the event, at the end of January, whether as competitors or officials, please remember you are representing the South West motorsport community and so act responsibly and let us ensure we have no excuse later to be embarrassed at what some of our number have done A Note from the Editor... Well thats the 2009 Season been and gone and in fact 2009 ~ where does the time go?????! Paul Parker Chairman Congratulations should go to all of the this year s Championship winners and thanks to you all for your continued support of the Association again this year. I hope that you and your members have found the previous issues of the newsletter informative and useful and that they have kept you fully up to date as to what is going on in the South West. Finally it just leaves me to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a successful and competitive 2010! JL The ASW team of John Fack, Duncan Stephens and Ian Rodman won the sporting trials inter-association team event on Sunday 1st November at the November Sporting trial run by www.sportingtrials.com in Kent. John Fack won overall, Duncan Stephen finished third and Ian Rodman ninth overall. The morning saw gale force winds and also torrential rain, however the ground offered a surprisingly amount of grip so much so that Fack dropped just two points, and Stephens dropped just five three of which were resultant of a broken driveshaft. The AWM team of Julian Fack, Peter Fensom and Dave Oliver finished second and a second ASW team (Calvin Kneebone, Roland Uglow and Paul Faulkner) third.

DECEMBER 2009 Wests Wanderings Happy Christmas and New Year from your Association Secretary, and a special welcome to those Clubs who have joined us this year. Please note that there are many Championship Rule changes for 2010 from both the MSA and the ASW. Therefore, you cannot just copy last years reg's for 2010; it will be a considerable re-write. Our sponsors are still complaining that they do not always get sufficient publicity and coverage in many of the Qualifying Event Regulations. Sometimes they are not mentioned at all! Publicity is one of the main reasons that we get sponsors, but in return we must give them good coverage. We would not be in a positvie cash flow situation without the support from sponsors. The 2009 Awards Presentation is to take place on Sunday 14th February 2010, with a venue change to Colyford Memorial Hall (Post Code EX24 6QJ), on the A3052, only 3 miles from Wiscombe, and 5 miles from Lyme Regis. This has been decided because we were badly let down by the Hartnoll Hotel's buffet meal last February, and currently there is no sign of an improvement there. I am the Chairman of the Hall so if anything goes wrong with the catering etc. then the buck stops with me!!! However, I am sure that we won't be let down. Further details will be found elsewhere in this Newsletter. Have a wonderful years sport in 2010, whether it is as a competitor, marshal or organiser. Howard West The Officers and Executive of the ASW would like to take this opportunity to wish all the Clubs and their members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year. Thank you all for your support in 2009 to make this last year a successful and competitive year.

Well that s the 2009 Season over! Congratulations to all of the 2009 Champions and thank you all for your continued support again this year, in all three championships. Thank you to all of you who have got your 2010 Registrations in already, and for those of you that have not, I attach the 2010 Registration Form, for you to complete and return to Jannine. The provisional calendars for 2010 are included in this Newsletter and I hope that we can look forward to another year s great competition! Just a reminder that the MSA Blue Book has been re referenced and re numbered again this year! Sprints/Hill climbs are now Section S and Autocross can be found under Section N. Darren At the AGM held in October the changes to the Championship rules were ratified and the changes to the Class structure and the scoring system were agreed. A new copy of the regulations will appear on the website shortly, and in the year book when it has been published. We should really pass on a huge thanks to Mike Potter and Bridge Tyres & Wheels, for his continued support of both Speed Championships in 2009 and I can confirm that this will continue into 2010. This is designed for Juniors driving cars up to 1400cc. I hope this will encourage youngsters to take up Motorsport at a grass roots level and I can confirm that registrations for Juniors will be FOC, at least for 2010. Car Trials With Championship now concluded I can announce that Nigel Weeks is in first place with 12 points and runner up is Chris Judge. Well done 2010 promises to be a better year with more events under the helm of Brian Alexander Can I take this opportunity to wish both Brian and Duncan all the best with the future of these championships and my great full thanks to all over the years South West Motorsport Show/GoMotorsport The Innovation Development team at North Devon College is organising a South West Motorsport Show at the Royal Marine base at Chivenor on Sunday 23 May 2010. This is being put together in association with the GoMotorsport campaign. There will be an opportunity for clubs to take stands and also I am sure they'll be grateful for any "interesting" cars from club members to put on show. They are trying to arrange some F1 show cars and possibly also one or two of the GoMotorsport ambassadors. Any ideas of your own to supplement "the show" I am sure will be looked at with interest! Peter One other element they are considering are Autotest/AutoSolo demonstration runs, so anyone with any interest in those fields might be welcomed with open arms! Thomas in his first year of Autotesting finished 5th overall in the Autotest Championship. Lorraine Chappell finished 2nd overall after her 9th place finish in the Sealed Stage Rally Championship for Co-Drivers and Josh Male picked up the final podium position after his 14th overall in the Sealed Stage Rally Drivers Championship. 2010 promises to be even more competitive as a new Junior class has been added to the Autocross Championship, this will hopefully increase juniornumbers in Autocross and add more numbers to the Under 21 s. Autotest 2009 Congratulations to Wayne Grimshaw from Plymouth who won the 2009 Richard Egger Insurance ASW Autotest Championship. It was a close run championship with Wayne tied with Ernie Burles, but claimed the title after the tie breaker was applied and dropped scores re-introduced. Mark Williams ended up in 3rd spot with Ray Sissins taking the final award in 4th. Thomas Burles efforts saw him 5th overall in the Autotest Championship in his first year of competing at this level and also claimed him the Under 21 s Championship. He will be definitely one to watch in the future as he showed a vast improvement in speed by the end of the season. The free registration introduced for 2009 saw a large jump in numbers, with 18 competitors and an average of 8 National B competitors on each event, which is double the 2008 average. Registration will remain free for 2010, so please enter early and encourage your fellow club members to come along and have a go. Class structure will be changed for 2010 to match that of the MSA/BTRDA Championships, so Road Going Cars will be in Class E for 2010. Details will be posted on the ASW website soon. There are 9 rounds on offer for 2010 with an additional round added by Weston-s-Mare, which will run in May. The club will also be hosting the Inter-Association Autotest on one of the events, most likely to the October Kingston Autotest as this seems to be clear of clashes with other events around the UK and N.Ireland.
