This program has had the same leadership team for 10 of the last 12 years of CHHS s history! Spiritleader Basics How many spiritleaders will you take? All practices take place after school at CHHS or at the Talent Factory in Chino. If Spiritleaders choose to work - PLEASE schedule work after 5:30 pm. Spiritleaders are required to cheer at ALL football games, ALL basketball games, ALL home wrestling matches and other games as called upon. Spiritleading is a year round activity. Spiritleaders may think twice when being a member of another sport or program at CHHS as it will conflict with most spirit events. Spiritleaders are allowed to participate on All-Star Teams, however, please be aware of our practice schedules. It is very difficult to accommodate various All Star Team schedules. See possible dates on line. It depends on the judges scores and the amount of candidates. However, we are always looking for: 8-18Varsity Cheer 12-18 JV Cheer 7-10 Varsity Song 7-12 JV Song 2-4 Varsity Mascots 2

Requirements and Qualifications Please go to www.chhshuskyspirit.com and click on Try-Out Information and read the Constitution and other docs! This is very important! Online Application Forms Link Donation Requests Spiritleading is not funded by CHHS ASB, athletics or district programs. It is not a Title IX program. All programs at CHHS ask for donations for items needed for students. There will be a basic spirit pack available for approximately $400. (confirmation of price will be at first congratulations/ booster meeting). Uniform (including sweats) Choreographer/Coach fees Shoes Spiritleaders and their families who opt to have a school issued uniform and suppliesmust not personalize or alter the uniform/supplies in anyway. Spiritleaders will be requested to check out items. Spiritleaders and their families who opt to order their own uniform may alter the sizing of their uniforms but not the overall look of the uniform. Sweatshirt Please see estimated donation sheet on website In the past: All spiritleaders: Coaching & Choreography 400.00 Music 60.00 USSL Camp 385.00 Camp Clothes (possible 2nd uniform) 200.00 Sweatshirt 30.00 General Booster Fees 25.00 Shoes 65.00 Poms & Megaphones 40.00 Hairbows (includes comp bow) 15.00 Competition Fees 300.00 Talent Factory 480.00 Talent Factory We are lucky enough to have a good relationship with Talent Factory for dance technique and tumbling class. While not mandatory, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that spiritleaders be enrolled in Monday afternoon classes that are set aside just for our school. Coach Carissa and Coach Smiley are also on staff at TF. (TF Co-Owner and co-director) 5

Camp is optional There are several ways to raise funds. At CHHS we have bingo fundraisers where you can work beyond your required hours, we accept sponsorships and we have individual account fundraiser events. Camp for all spiritleaders will be July 25-28, 2013 at Vanguard University. (Across the street from the Orange County Fair). Spiritleaders who do not attend are still required to learn material from captains and other squad members by the Wednesday before the first football game. Camp deposits will be taken at first booster meeting. Varsity only Camp Online Application: Step 1 Varsity has the option to attend USA Elite Camp at Knott s Berry Farm August 6-9, 2013. Why do we go? We believe that USA has unique opportunities for our older spiritleaders such as All-American try-outs, staff try-out invites and travel and performances opportunities. Go to chhshuskyspirit.com and click on links Fill out the short online application. How to Apply Step 2 Step 1: Make sure that all information has been read and agreed to by the Spirit Family. Check out all of our info at www.chhshuskyspirit.com Turn in your cover sheet packet which includes, physical, spirit pack sheet and your teacher evaluations to the Spirit box in the CHHS front office by April 11, 2013. 6

No Essay! Clinic and Try-Outs In the past we have had a written essay submitted by each candidate. This year the spirit staff will be conducting short, informal interviews with candidates during clinic. There is a clinic and try-out dress code. All Spiritleader Candidates are required to wear the Try-Out t-shirt ORHusky P.E. Shirts and Shorts (eighth graders may wear their middle school P.E. shirts and shorts) Hair needs to be pulled away from your face and keep it neat. (ponytails are recommended) Absolutely no glitter or jewelry is allowed. It is a safety hazard for some and could possibly detract from your performance. Athletic tennis shoes for cheer and mascots. Jazz shoes for song. Try-Out Spirit Pack Please tuck in your shirt. You are jumping, rolling and moving around a lot, and we do not want to "flash" anyone, especially the judges at tryouts. Please bring a water bottle. Cell phones should be put on silent or turned off and should not be a distraction to the clinic candidate or others. We politely ask that cell phones are not to be brought out during the duration of clinics, including break times. Try-outs and clinic are closed to spectators. Please no recording of instructional material. Candidates may buy a t-shirt and ribbon for try-outs. Order forms are in your packet. You are welcome to turn them in tonight. We have found that candidates would rather wear something other than p.e. clothes and it helps make everyone equal in the eyes of the judges. Every candidate must have a physical on file. Teacher Evaluations Forms are available tonight or can be in the forms section of www.chhshuskyspirit.com They are due in your packet. You cannot participate in clinics without the physical. Each candidate must turn in TWO evaluations. Must be in a sealed envelope with teacher signature on the back Send a thank you to the teacher If you are currently in the program, the CHHS staff MUST fill out one of your evaluations. 7

Captain Applications Judging We are accepting captain applications for all returning spiritleaders. We will post our captains along with the final squad selections. Please see the captain application in the forms section of www.chhshuskyspirit.com. We will accept captain applications until the first day of clinic. They will have absolutely no connection to Chino Hills High School. Each candidate will be scored on a 1-100 point scale The 3-4 judge sheets will be totaled together for 300/400 points possible. Total Points for Try-Out Score Results Clinics - 15 points possible Teacher Evaluations - 15 points each Report Card - 10 points possible Candidate Essay - 10 points possible So 50 points possible with try-out packet Judges at tryouts - 100 points possible per Judge Squad results will be posted according to the candidate s try-out number and will be on www.chhshuskyspirit.com after 3 pm on Friday, April 26.
