The first game tips off at 6 p.m. Friday between visiting schools Arkansas Tech University and Southwestern Oklahoma State University to be followed by WTAMU and Missouri Southern State University at 8 p.m. The consolation game will be Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., followed by the championship game at 6 p.m. Buffs On The Air and On The Web Listen to Buff basketball action on the Buffalo Sports Network on KGNC 710 AM, with broadcasts starting 15 minutes before tip-off. About The Teams The Buffs opened their 2004-2005 season with a disappointing, 76-70 overtime loss to the University of Central Arkansas last Friday. WTAMU took a three point lead with nine seconds left in regulation, only to have UCA hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force OT. This was the first time in three years that the Buffs have lost their season opener. WTAMU bounced back to defeat Oklahoma Panhandle State University, 69-66, Monday, as the Buffs used a 24-11 second-half surge to take a 12-point lead, then held off a frantic OPSU rally as the Buffs garnered their first win of the year. Missouri Southern is 1-2 on the year, after losing their last two games to two point deficits both times, against Oklahoma Panhandle State, 75-73, on Friday, and 83-81 to St. Mary s University on Saturday. Junior guard Jeremy McCadney tallied 16 points and four rebounds in the 83-81 loss to the Rattlers, and is averaging 16.3 points per game so far in the Lions first three games. Arkansas Tech opened their 2004-2005 campaign with back-to-back victories over William Baptist University and Northeastern State University before losing, 82-50, at Murray State Tuesday night and enter this weekend 2-1 on the season. The Wonder Boys pulled away from Williams Baptist, 90-79, and edged Northeastern State, 67-65, Saturday. Senior guard Terrence Martin leads ATU with 16.7 ppg in the first three outings. Southwestern Oklahoma enters this weekends competition on a three game winning streak having beat USAO twice (Nov. 15: 78-73 and Nov. 22: 86-73) and Oklahoma Panhandle once, 56-48 on Nov. 17. The Bulldogs have netted a combined 220 points (73.3 ppg), compared to their opponent who have netted 194 (64.7 ppg). Seniors Lee J. Kirkpatrick and Ike Smith lead SWOSU with 14.3 ppg apiece. The Coaches WTAMU head coach Rick Cooper (Wayland Baptist, 1981), who is in his 12th year at the helm of the Buffs, is WTAMU s all-time winningest head coach. Cooper became WTAMU s all-time winningest coach with the Buffs win at Southwestern Oklahoma on Jan. 8, 2004 for win No. 207, passing Sam Burton s 206 wins from 1921-1933. With a 218-101 (.683) record, Cooper currently is fourth on WTAMU s Best Winning Percentage list. {See WTAMU s coaching log on Page 6}. In his 18 years as a collegiate head coach, Cooper has a 370-149 (.713) career record. Cooper is a three-time LSC Coach of the Year (1993-94, 1997-98, 1998-99), as well as NABC South Central Regional Coach of the Year (1997-98). The Buffs have won three LSC titles under Cooper and been to the NCAA Regional Tournament five times, including three in the last four years. Missouri Southern head coach Robert Corn (MSSU, 1978) is in his 16th year leading the Lions. Corn has compiled a 239-186 (.562) overall and career record at MSSU. Arkansas Tech head coach Rick McCormick (Science and Arts of Oklahoma, 1979) enters his second season with the Wonder Boys. In his career with ATU, he has compiled a 9-21 record (.300) and a career record of 240-206 (.538) in his 16 years of coaching. Southwestern Oklahoma s Scott Reed (Northeastern State, 1992) is in his third year leading the Bulldogs. Reed has a 21-11 (.656) overall and career record with SWOSU. Lamb hit an impressive 11 of 13 from the free throw line and shot 5 of 15 from the field. Monday at OPSU, Lamb tallied 11 points to go with five assists and two steals. Lamb leads WTAMU with 17.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 3.5 apg. Newcomer Govinda Thomas-Carter (6-3, junior, guard) is netting 15.0 ppg, after posting 18 points against UCA, hitting a pair of free throws with nine seconds left in regulation that gave the Buffs a threepoint advantage. Thomas-Carter also picked up six rebounds, while going 4 for 4 from the free throw line and 2 for 3 from behind the 3-point arc. Monday against OPSU, he tallied 18 points, draining 2-of-3 3-pointers and going 4 for 4 from the charity stripe, including a pair with 6.6 seconds left to again give WTAMU a three point lead. Seniors Richard Higginbotham (6-7, post) and newcomer Jamil Terrell (6-6, post) left their mark on the season opener as well. Higginbotham tallied 10 points off the bench, while Terrell added nine points to go with his game-high 15 rebounds. About Southwestern Oklahoma Southwestern Oklahoma enters the weekend with three wins, including two wins over the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma and one win over Oklahoma Panhandle. The two teams met Monday with the Bulldogs emerging victorious, 86-73. SWOSU has netted a combined 220 points (73.3 ppg), compared to their opponent who have netted 194 (64.7 ppg). The Bulldogs are led by seniors 6-6 forward Lee J. Kirkpatrick and 6-4 guard Ike Smith, who each average 14.3 points per game. NCAA Champion s Challenge Coming To Canyon NCAA Basketball Fan Experience Part of Thanksgiving Tournament The WTAMU Athletic Department is pleased to announce that the university has been selected to host the NCAA Basketball Champion s Challenge on Nov. 27, 2004. The event will coincide with the Coca-Cola/ First United Bank Thanksgiving Shootout being played at the WTAMU Event Center on Nov. 26-27. Champion s Challenge is an NCAA Basketball fan experience enjoyed by fans of all ages. Participants will have the opportunity to display their skills shooting hoops and participating in various on-court games, playing the latest NCAA Basketball video games and testing their vertical leap. There are also unique photo opportunities, a kid s court section and the chance to win great NCAA Basketball prizes. The stop in Canyon is part of a national tour that began earlier this year and will continue through the end of the 2004-2005 season. West Texas A&M is the only Lone Star Conference school and one of 30 Division II schools selected to host the event. The Champion s Challenge will be held from 1-6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27 at the WTAMU Event Center. Concurrently, the Lady Buffs will play the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs at 2 p.m., and the consolation and championship games of the men s Coca-Cola/ First United Bank Thanksgiving Shootout tournament will be played at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
