Should I say the new golf club -- the food and good company are wonderful. Our Club continues to be moving full of activities and life. Importantly our next event is the Pride of Workmanship, with Nick pulling the event together. A Pride of Work event requires nominees. There are people we have daily contact with who give a little extra above our expectations. It can be welcoming conversation, to me at the paper shop I am warmly greeted, to be told the paper has been sold out, OK, I have not read the one from yesterday. Of importance, is the proprietor will help and give assistance when asked, also the same to others who come into the shop. I am sure our family and friends tell us of their good local experiences, let Nick and his team know. This event hopefully, as it was last year, included larger employers, opening up our Club beyond the local shops and schools. Graffiti Removal Day is this weekend. I have asked Nick to represent the Club, at the launching of the event at State Parliament House on Tuesday 14 October. Peter Smith declined the invitation to drive our Graffiti removal ute up and around Macquarie Street. All that signage The Rotary Club of Strathfield Page 1

wasted! It would have been cool, Smithy! Here is the promotional banner. Graffiti Removal Day Sunday 21 October 2018 The success of graffiti removal in our community and the promotion such as this event, is in my view due to the enthusiasm and efforts of Peter, his team, and other Rotary Clubs, over a number of years. Thank you, Peter. Last meeting the 3rd Raffle Prize was 2 tickets to the Russian Film Festival. This brought comment from the back of the room, from Raymond, asking for a piece of Dostoyevsky. I picked up the offer, and have added a text from The Gambler. I have not read a lot of Dostoyevsky, it is heavy reading, but I have read this short story. The extract, while written in the 1870 s is not lost in today s Sydney. [please see Out and About for the piece to which Charles refers Ed] A final comment, the 1st Prize in the raffle was a bottle of Black Label whisky, thank you Dimitri. The takings were a record at $300. My wife thought it was due to having tickets to the Russian Film Festival as a prize! Appears we are going in early November, having won an earlier raffle at another gig! Charles Last Week s event: speaker: Marvin Manrique- Velasqez Our guest speaker last week was our own Marvin Manrique-Veasquez whose membership is so recent he is yet to be formally inducted. An accountant by profession, Marvin and wife Kimberley came to Australia from Colombia. Commencing with a short video of scenes of Colombia, giving us a glimpse of various cultures in that country, he went on to tell us that he was a student leader in high school. He joined a local Rotaract Club of, becoming president of that club in 2017 His Rotaract Club became involved with a project titled Trees for Life and other environmental projects. The Club s interest included rescuing stray cats and dogs and arranging for them to be adopted by families seeking pets. There are an estimated 360,000 children not in school, whether because their labour is required to help support the family unit or they lack money to buy school supplies. Another project was to provide the equivalent of A$130 to enable the purchase of school supplies. Education is free but the students are required to buy certain of their own supplies. If an application is made by someone who has had assistance previously, the applicant has to establish that the previous payment was properly applied. One of the more surprising features of Marvin s talk is that as recently as 10 months ago, he spoke no English. Summary by Chris Haseldine The Rotary Club of Strathfield Page 2

This Week s speaker: Anna Pelle Anna Pelle was born and raised in Sydney, Australia and comes from a traditional Italian family. With the passing of her father, her reflections on the experience lead her down a different path. Currently volunteering within Palliative Care at a Children s Hospital, Anna will tonight explain the role of an end of life Doula. Next Week s speaker: Biagio Gino Versace Biagio s goal is to raise awareness, and also to remove the stigma, around Autism & Mental Health. Director s reports From Wednesday 10-10-18 Treasurer Rod McDougall reminded members of the three-step process for admitting new members. 1. There needs to be a proposer (of a potential new member), 2. The Board considers the matter and accepts/rejects, 3. If accepted by the Board, the nomination is circulated to all members and they can advise of any objections. The Rotary Club of Strathfield Page 3

Member s reports From Wednesday 10-10-18 Nick Hamilton-Kane Is the organiser of this year s Pride of Work. Nick would like twelve nominations, and requested that members identify and submit names. He is also sounded out members for suggestions for an appropriate guest speaker. Niall King Advised that the next Trish Gold Day fundraiser will be held on Thursday 21-February-2019. Registration at Strathfield Golf Club will be at 11:00am before the Shotgun 4-ball Ambrose event begins. Attendees have three options, golf only, golf and dinner, or dinner only. Niall advised that members could help in a number of ways; as a sponsor, provider of raffle prizes or auction items, or being a volunteer on the day. [It was wonderful to see Honorary Member Niall King at the meeting Ed] Bradley Ayres Confirmed that we could obtain Strathfield Rotary caps and polo shirt per the samples shown. Price is $14.30 for the cap and $23.10 for the polo shirt. With so many new members, we should require quite a few. Commitment sheet will be circulated. Here are the rules of the game: 1. This is a test of your accountability and responsibility. If you are rostered on for a particular night, you are accountable and responsible for running the raffle on that night. Please don't let your club down. 2. On your night, you do the lot: arrange the prizes beforehand (three prizes is all we need; be creative with them); announce the raffle; sell the tickets; tally the money; manage the draw; and make it a huge success. I will assist if needed. We can also enlist the support of other members on the night for ticket selling, etc. 3. If you can't make it on the night, you must arrange to swap your shift with someone else on the roster (early!). Don't just let it slip by so we don't have a raffle on the night. 4. If on the night that you're rostered on we have a Transfer Meeting (or no meeting) and so no raffle is required, you get the night off; bonus! Out and About: Women In Rotary Forum Sunday 14th October 2018 Wonderful to see that two members of Strathfield Rotary attended this event WIR Chair Bharathi Rengarajan, Rick Vosilia, Ursha Garg, DG Sue Hayward and our AG Renga Rajan Out and About: Charle s selected literature The gentlemen gambler, he must do this simply for the love of the game itself--simply for sport, simply in order to observe the process of winning or of losing, and, above all things, as a man who remains quite uninterested in the possibility of his issuing a winner. If he wins, he will be at liberty, perhaps, to give vent to a laugh, or to pass a remark on the circumstance to a bystander, or to stake again, or to double his stake; but, even this he must do solely out of curiosity, and for the pleasure of watching the play of chances and of calculations, and not because of any vulgar desire to win. In a word, he must look upon the gaming-table, upon roulette, and upon trente et quarante, as mere relaxations which have been arranged solely for his amusement. Of the existence of the lures and gains upon which the bank is founded and maintained he must profess to have not an inkling. Best of all, he ought to imagine his fellow-gamblers and the rest of the mob which stands trembling over a coin to be equally rich and gentlemanly with himself, and playing solely for recreation and pleasure. This complete ignorance of the realities, this innocent view of mankind, is what, in my opinion, constitutes the truly aristocratic.
