About the Institution of Engineers (India) The Institution of Engineers (India) or IEI is the largest multidisciplinary professional body that encompasses 15 engineering disciplines and gives engineers a global platform from which to share professional interest. IEI has membership strength of more than 0.8 million. Established in 1920, with its headquarters at 8 Gokhale Road, Kolkata - 700020, IEI has served the engineering fraternity for over nine decades. In this period of time it has been inextricably linked with the history of modern-day engineering. In 1935, IEI was incorporated by Royal Charter and remains the only professional body in India to be accorded this honour. Today, its quest for professional excellence has given it a place of pride in almost every prestigious and relevant organization across the globe. IEI functions among professional engineers, academicians and research workers. It provides a vast array of technical, professional and supporting services to the Government, Industries, Academia and the Engineering fraternity, operating from 120 Centres located across the country. The Institution has established R&D Centres at various locations in the country and also provides grant-in-aid to its members to conduct research and development on engineering subjects. IEI conducts Section A& B Examinations in different Engineering disciplines, the successful completion of which is recognized as equivalent to Degree in appropriate field of Engineering of recognized Universities of India by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India. Every year as many as 90000 candidates appear for these exams. For details, please see: www.ieindia.org The Institution of Engineers (India), Telangana State Centre The Telangana State Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India) has on its rolls more than 7584 Corporate Members covering fifteen disciplines of Engineering besides non-corporate Members to the order of 19791. The Telangana State Centre has been one of the most active Centres of the Institution of Engineers (India) which is engaged in successfully translating the objectives and ideals of IEI into practice. The present Telangana state Centre is legacy of erstwhile Hyderabad State Centre of Nizam s Hyderabad State. INTRODUCTION: The Institution of Engineers (India), Telangana State Centre has been conducting All India Seminars under the aegis of Mechanical Engineering Division Board on Mechanical subjects of national importance and of 2
relevance to the issues that need to be addressed by the Central and State Governments. This year, the IEI, Telangana State Centre has contemplated to conduct Two-Day All India Seminar on Fuel Cells and Hybrid Vehicle Technology on 18-19 August, 2017 under the aegis of Mechanical Engineering Division Board, IEI. ABOUT THE SEMINAR The traditional internal combustion engine made economic sense when oil was cheap and plentiful and the effects of burning fossil fuels and pollution were not understood. Although electric vehicles were popular at the start of the 20th century, they declined given their low top speed, and the discovery of large oil reserves. One hundred years later, oil now accounts for about 95 per cent of the global transportation sector fuel and 13 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. The environmental damage from the internal combustion engine is further compounded by the problem of air pollution. As well as carbon dioxide emissions, cars also produce dangerous chemicals such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), Sulphur oxide (SO X ) and carbon monoxide emissions. While the industry has been able to produce technologies to try to limit these dangerous chemicals, transport using fossil fuels cannot completely eliminate these emissions. Given its importance in current and future emission scenarios, innovations in road transport particularly vehicle technology is receiving a lot of attention from decision makers and consumers searching for more efficient mobility. Currently, technologists are developing and adapting fuel cell & Hybrid vehicle technology for practical use in exhaust-free automobiles. The aim of the Seminar is to provide the participants an overall insight in to fuel cell technology and the working of hybrid vehicles. This Seminar covers various aspects of the advancements that this technology has to offer in the future generation. Participants will be made to understand the fundamentals of these technologies, their applications and clean energy methodologies. It will also cover the challenges posed to fuel cell technology as well as hybrid vehicles. The Institution of Engineers (India) is one of the Premier Forums of National Technocrats showing concern for stakeholders of the Vehicle Technology. Hence it was decided to organize the theme actually to bring out considered view points and recommendations through its State and Local Centres. 3
It is proposed to involve working Engineers, Students and Faculty (Mechanical, Automobile, Chemical and Electrical & Electronics branches) from academic institutions, working professionals from Industry, Central and State Government Departments and PSUs in the field of proposed Seminar. THEME: Fuel Cells and Hybrid Vehicle Technology Sub-Themes: Fundamentals of electric and hybrid vehicles Fuel Cell technology- advancements for future Challenges in fuel cell technology Clean energy methods in fuel cell application Alternate energy source for generation of hydrogen in fuel cells Solid Oxide Fuel Cells Technology Hybrid fuel cell vehicles VENUE: The Seminar will be held at the Institution of Engineers (India), Telangana State Centre, Visvesvaraya Bhavan, Khairatabad, Hyderabad 500 004 on 18-19 August, 2017.
