June 2017 Volume 49 Number 6 DittyBag Lake Canyon Yacht Club, Canyon Lake, Texas the SAIL CANYON LAKE www. lcyc.net Commodore sreport Lynn Simpson As we approach the summer months there will be an increase of activity at the club. I am taking this opportunity to highlight a few of LCYC s club rules from the 2017 membership directory and handbook. On Page 68: The purpose of club rules is to encourage and support the enjoyment of the club its members, their families and guests. Page 73 G Launch Ramp Everyday Rules a. No one is allowed to ride on trailers or boats moving up and down the ramp or on any other location on club property. b. Trailer safety chains MUST be attached securely whenever your trailer is moving. Page 80 Member Responsibilities E2. Members must accompany their guests on club property unless they obtain specific authorization for unaccompanied guests. Page 77 Slips and Docks 11. Fishing is allowed from the docks only when it is safe. Walkways must be kept open. Fishing is not allowed during times of heavy traffic. No hooks or lures will be left on the walkway at any time; fishermen must clean up and remove all debris and material before they leave. In my article of the March edition of the Ditty Bag I wrote that I would be highlighting some of the LCYC rules within a month or so. I can now cross that off of my list of things to do! The club calendar for May has been full of events; Adaptive Sailing, the last of the Spring Series races for keelboats and board boats, Cub Scout camp-out, Mother s Day Breakfast, Youth Sailing Lessons, The Longneck Multihull Regatta, The Memorial Day Fish Fry and Long Distance Race. Well done LCYC, our club really knows how to get things done! Welcome New Members Josue and Rosario Martinez... Boerne, TX Richard Onysko & Linda Visitsunthorn..San Antonio Mark and Linda Haynie... New Braunfels, TX Debbie and Jim Donaldson... Wimberley, TX David and Charlotte Haynie. New Braunfels, TX For the past several months Ray Leubner and Phil Crane have been working on the Leukemia Cup Regatta. This two day event has something for everyone; racing, great food, fabulous auction, live music, and being in the company of some really terrific people! With Ray at the helm of the LCR, great things are happening. For instance in the 3 years that LCYC has been hosting LCR a total of $108,000.00 has been raised! The goal for 2017 is to raise $42,000.00 that would bring the 4 year total to $150,000.00. Outstanding! Summer Solstice! In 2017 the summer solstice falls on Tuesday June 20 at 11:24 pm CDT. On that day there will be 14:04:06 hours of sunlight! I hope to see you at a future LCYC event, or better yet on the water! SAIL CANYON LAKE! 2017 Charles L. Branch M.D. Leukemia Cup Regatta - July 1 & 2 Ray Leubner Lake Canyon Yacht Club With a little over 5 weeks remaining (as of this writing) until the 2017 Leukemia Cup Regatta, LCYC has raised donations and commitments of over $18,000 for the South Central Branch of the Texas Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We re well on our way to reaching our goal of $42,000 this year, bringing our 4-year total to over $150,000! The 16 fundraising teams listed on the LCYC LCR webpage are working very hard to make this happen. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation, just choose your favorite team on the LCYC LCR webpage and a link will take you to their LCR team webpage. Sponsors signed up or committed to this year s event include CEMEX, Mittel Cattle, McCracken and Carroll Wealth Management, Roeschmann Design, Pete Macler Associates, Glen Graham and Associates, and Intruder Alert Systems (better known as Mike Samulin). Our efforts at securing sponsors have raised $7,000 so far! Also, the Silent Auction is now has 14 donations items. We are in need of more treasures from your attic and/or items and services from your favorite merchants. Please call Laurie McGill or me.check that attic or garage. You ll be surprised by what you don t treasure anymore. We will not be selling T-Shirts this year. The Board voted we do something different after 3 years of shirts, so we will be selling 20 oz. stainless steel vacuum insulated tumblers on which the LCYC LCR logo will be screen printed. If you want one or more reserved for you, please let me know ASAP as quantities will be limited to about 50 for sale at $15 plus tax. The NOR will be up by the end of May. Expectations are that we will have fleets in PHRF Spin, PHRF Non-Spin, Portsmouth Dingy, PHRF Trimaran, and Portsmouth Catamaran. Volunteers are needed to help Jake Mathis with Race Committee. Anu Day needs help staffing two shifts of 5 to help with dinner Saturday. We will be serving roast pork and gravy, red cabbage and potato salad (hopefully German potato salad, but I ve got to convince Joe O Brien on that one). Please remember to bring a side dish, salad or a dessert to compliment the meal. Be generous with the quantity you prepare as there lots of extra people in the form of crew, sponsors, and guests that will be attending. Please check the LCYC website and Blast E-mails in June for additional details. There will be an RSVP required for the Saturday dinner. A link to the form will be available in mid-june. Remember to include your guests and crew! AND there will be live music by Larry Read and team. Join in the fun and MAKE A DIFFERENCE in the fight against blood cancers! Youth Sailing Program Debbie and Chris Fogle youthsailing@lcyc.net Summer vacation is here! We held our annual Introduction to Sailing class over the last two weekends in May for 19 new sailors. As of the time we wrote this column, we had completed our first weekend, and the weather was great. Winds were light to moderate; clouds blocking the hot sun; seas were barely a ripple; and none of the forecasted storms materialized. We incorporated two Laser Picos and some newly refitted Optis into the rotation this year, and feedback was very positive. Our special thanks to our volunteers and coaches for their hard work putting on this great showcase event for our club and sport. Coaches Jim Kondziela, Ben Froelich, and Joe Murphy; Linda Kondziela, Jim Kempter, Ruben Davila, Harold Simmons, Lynn Simpson, and Youth Sailors JD, Zach, Teagan, Caleb, and Davis. Thank you, one and all! We have a new Facebook page please visit and Like us. You can search for @lcycyouthsailing on Facebook to find us. We will use it to highlight news and events on a more real-time and evolving fashion. Thank you to Linda for pulling this all together! I mentioned last month we will be welcoming a part-time sailing instructor for the summer. He is Coach Ben Froelich, and he s now onboard. Ben is a Level 2 US Sailing Instructor and a top finisher on the TSA Circuit in the Laser the past few years. You ll see Ben on the docks mostly Fridays and Saturdays during the summer please stop by and say, Hi! We are finalizing a schedule of available individual and small-group lessons and clinics. Stay tuned for more information! In June, we will have Youth Sailing and an Open Sail Day on the 24th and 25th stay tuned to the email blast and our Facebook page for more details. The full language of these rules, and those regarding guests on the property are printed in your Club directory beginning at page 80 and are available on the club s web site, www.lcyc.net, on the membership page. The best way to request this permit is through e-mail to clubadmin@lcyc.net Accounts Don t forget to pay your club accounts. If this will be trouble while you are away, go on and send some months in advance! Loads of members use this approach. Port Co-Captains Ann Cook & Carolyn Popp Gosh, another month has flown by and we still have lots of exciting events in the days ahead. Looking back, the May Commodore s Breakfast was a fun treat featuring pancakes, eggs, bacon, fruit, juice, champagne, and coffee. The breakfast was hosted by Fred Day and his merry crew of LCYC men. All women who attended were personally greeted with a happy smile and handed a fresh carnation by Bob Rupp, long-time LCYC member, AND they were serenaded by the kitchen crew with a favorite tune, Down By the Old Mill Stream. The clubhouse was packed and everyone had a very good time. Then there were the Spring Series III dinners and awards. Lynda Miller hosted the Keelboat meal with a turnout of around 65-70. Georgina and Ed Taddia prepared the Boardboat dinner for approximately 20-25. Thanks again to Lynda, Georgina and Ed for organizing some great food, and congratulations to all the winners! The June Commodore s Breakfast on the 18th will honor all the dads on Father s Day and will be hosted by Margaret McGill, Penny Monosmith, Ann Cook and their crew of LCYC merry maids.
