Karen and I moved from the Connecticut River Valley in 1990 to the Chicago- Land area. We had an opportunity to return for a reunion with my grad school buds, last month. When I first visited Charlevoix; it reminded me of Essex, CT and still does. However, Essex is more compact, less condo and older. Shortly after arriving in Libertyville, IL Karen and I were having lunch at the Half Day Inn, in Lincolnshire. The Inn boasted of being the oldest building in Lake County. I turned the placemat over and it read 1868. That s not really old! The Noah Pratt House was the home of William Pratt, one of the first three settlers of Essex. NOW THAT S OLD! PAGE 1
COMMANDER S MESSAGE (continued) The United States Power Squadrons turned 100 in 2014. That s pretty old, as far as organizations go. As a result, we find that our name does not resonate with today s boaters. We need to update our public image and appeal to today s boater in new ways: We want our new brand to convey that we are an active and vibrant organization, we are a boating organization and we support our members. We are welcoming and inclusive, We boat together, We learn together, We help each other and the boating community. The 2018 boating season has officially started with the Memorial Day weekend Shake Down Cruise to Menominee. The VSC blitz at SkipperBuds is Saturday, 2 June, as is the flare shoot and fire extinguisher demo. Dolores and John will be hosting our Squadron Picnic, Sunday, 10 June, with a theme of Sunday Supper and Sunset. I ve seen the sunset at the Hermann s. It s SPECTACULAR!! Lastly, District 10 is host for the National Governing Board Meeting in Minneapolis 12-19 August. (See information below.) The D-10 steering committee is working very hard to make this a memorable event, with social venues such as West Side Story at the Guthrie, Prince s private estate and production complex tour, Paisley Park and a Twins baseball game. I m counting on this to be a lot of fun and an opportunity for all of us to participate in a National event. Check the link below for more information: https://www.usps.org/php/reservations_new/meetings.php? mtg_id=34 Until next month: let s go play on the water! John Hermann and I are working with FedEx in Green Bay to update our banners with new graphics. The Pop-Up prototype appears on page one. FROM YOUR EDUCATION OFFICER Ahoy Everyone, End of year school work is pressing me so my report will be short and sweet. The ABC course is scheduled for11-14 June with a possible extra day. The course will be held at NWTC for two hours each evening. The incredible news is that we have a total of 20, yes 20, students signed up. This is the biggest class in many years and is the result of the great work of Lou, John, and Bob getting the word out in the local schools. This will be an exciting and fun course to teach. Bob DeNoto, Lou Pasquesi, John Herman and I will be the instructors for the course. Wouldn t it be great if we could get some new members out of this? Seminars will be discussed at our next executive committee meeting and I will let you know via e-mail what, where and when they will be offered. I am thinking Thursday evening would be a good time at Quarterdeck and the Maritime Museum. but I will let you know. Let s all enjoy the upcoming boating season and be safe on the water. Fair Winds, Steve 26-28 May Memorial Day weekend Shake Down Cruise to Menominee We had two boats; Lark (Terry and Julie Keating) and Southern Cross (Gary and Sandy King). The weather was beautiful, expect for a squall Saturday evening. While walking the docks we noticed Radie8 (Steve and Carol Davis) tied at the wall by the Marina Office. However, our paths did not cross. Also, saw Yachta Yachta (Russell and DeEtte Radant) with three other boats from Quarterdeck Marina. EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT NEWS Season s Greetings Everyone, Season? What season? you wonder. The boating season, of course! Tis the season to be cruising or boating on our great local waters. Door County Squadron is a boating community. Check out the 2018 schedule, mark your calendars and sign up for one of the cruises. Do it now, before your calendar gets full. Cedar River looks like a lot of fun to me. Call or email Sandy and Gary King. Have your own day, overnight or longer excursion in mind? Let Dolores know for the Scuttlebutt, and you may well get boats to join you. June is usually the busiest month in the squadron. Our Saturday 2 June annual VSC (Vessel Safety Check) blitz at Quarterdeck and Harbor Club marinas was a great success. Our team of five VSEs did over 25 VSCs at Quarterdeck alone. Thanks to Bob DeNoto, Rex Pope, Lou Pasquesi, John Hermann, Alan Wentworth and VSE-in-training, Mike Wember. We again partnered with Coast Guard Auxiliary VSEs who focused on Harbor Club. Unfortunately, due to onshore wind, the Flare Shoot Fire Extinguisher training that same afternoon needed to be cancelled. 9 June our VSEs will be at Centerpointe, while VSCs will be done at Sister Bay Marina 6-10 June. And we await your call for a private VSC wherever your boat. Let your friends know. Skipper Bud s in-the-water boat show takes place at Harbor club 22-24 June. Our VSEs will be on hand with our tent that Saturday. Call me, John Hermann, if you would like to meet visitors at our tent for a couple of hours and have a chance to look at the new and used boats for sale. Join your squadron friends at the annual picnic Sunday 10 June. Something different; a grill-out and sunset at the Hermann s. See the announcement in this issue. Be there or be square.! Kayaking is the fastest growing boating activity. Can you find time to join Paddlefest in Fish Creek between 22-24 June? Our VSEs will be there. Whatever else is on your schedule, make time to be with your friends in the Door County Squadron. We are America s Boating Club in Door County See you in June, John Hermann, PAGE 3 Bob DeNoto, Alan Wentworth & Mike Wember ready to inspect boats at Quarterdeck. IN THE NEWS Lou Pasquesi, Vessel Safety Chair, did an interview with Eric Fischer of the Door County Daily News.com, Door County s daily electronic newspaper, to highlight boating safety in conjunction with Safe Boating Week last April. Proper boating safety measures can be the difference between life and death according to Lou Pasquesi, Lieutenant Commander of the Door County Sail and Power Squadron. National Safe Boating Week began Saturday and groups such as the US Power Squadrons and US Coast Guard are advocating for boaters to take boating safety courses, have your boat inspected, and always wear a life jacket while on the water. Pasquesi says that a confident and educated boater will have more fun and be safer. HAPPY JUNE BIRTHDAY Thank you to all of the members who contributed articles and pictures.
