Week 11, Term 1, Thursday 13 April 2017 Greetings! Here we are, already at the end of Term 1! What a lot has happened here over the last 11 weeks! Sports Day Most recently, we have had the pleasure of participating in Sports Day, whether that be as a sports person, student support (both staff members and parents) or spectator. This was a wonderful celebration of our Physical Education program and all that it offers the students here at St. Martin s. Congratulations and thanks to the staff who prepared and supported the students, the parents who worked tirelessly as providers of food and drinks or scorers, the parents and other family members who encouraged and supported the students in their participation the students for their enthusiasm and hard work the members of our community that supported this event through ensuring that we were all safe, or looked after if we were unwell or injured, that the scores were recorded accurately, that the bins were emptied and so it goes on Particular thanks to Mr Michael Woods, our PE teacher, for his preparation and planning, and efficient running of this event.

Second Hand Uniform Thank you to all of you who have dropped in bags or individual items of school uniform to be donated to our second hand uniform sales. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. We welcome donations of second hand uniform at any time. Term 2 A reminder that all students are to return to school on Tuesday 2 nd May in their winter uniform. Hats are optional in this term but should be left at school in case of a day where the UV reading is high. Please note that Monday 1 st May is a pupil free day. The teaching staff will be engaging in professional learning in the area of Numeracy on this day. Traffic Management As you would be aware from Christine Comas letter on our Skoolbag app, we are having a few issues regarding traffic management. We are working with the Port Adelaide Enfield Council to rectify this but until such time, we ask that you obey the restrictions that are in place at present. The restrictions creating the most concern for parents is the solid yellow line which runs from the entrance to our Kiss & Drop area to Princes Rd and then the NO STOPPING signs on Princes Rd. The law states that you are not allowed to stop your vehicle in a no stopping zone, or on a solid yellow line, not even for a few seconds. This precludes you from queuing up along Princes Rd for the Kiss & Drop. The Council recommends that you park further away, legally, or you arrive later so that you do not need to queue. If you arrive and the Kiss & Drop is full, the Council recommends that you continue to drive along Princes Rd, or around the block until such time as you can enter the Kiss & Drop area without queuing on Princes Rd. Next term, we will be asking cars who have made it to the front of the Kiss & Drop line to continue moving, rather than sitting and waiting for students to come out of their class. This will require another lap of the school block and then returning to the Kiss & Drop via Princes Rd. We are asking for your patience in this matter. We understand that this is very frustrating and inconvenient but we will continue to work to resolve this matter for the safety of all our students. Blessings to you and your family This week, we celebrate the most holy of weeks as we recall the last week of Jesus life on earth. May the significance of these recollections touch your heart and affect the way you live your life and may the joy of the Resurrection lift your Spirit and renew you. Susanne Harding Deputy Principal

The next session is: Monica s Church. Tuesday, 2 nd May at 7pm at St The Confirmation ceremony officiated by Archbishop Wilson will be: Tuesday, 9 th May at 7pm at St Monica s Church. Outreach St Vincent de Paul Greenacres Walkerville Conference thanks the staff, students and their families at St Martin's School for supporting the Sport s Day Raffle and donating the proceeds to Vinnies. Special thanks to the Staff who generously donated the raffle prizes. OLSH Visit On Monday 3rd April, we were most fortunate to have 4 guest speakers from OLSH College. The girls enlightened our Year 5 classes about their personal faith journeys. We discovered new information about Islam, Sikhism, Hinduism and Catholicism. The students from St Martin s listened intently and took many notes to use in class with various learning tasks. Thank you so much to OLSH College for coming to visit us.

SPORTS NEWS Football (Australian Rules) If sufficient interest and numbers cannot be confirmed by the end of week 10 it may not be possible to field some teams. Subsequently there will be no Saturday morning football in Terms Two and Three. Auskick is an AFL sponsored, child parent Australian Rules Football skills participation programme. St Martin s is aiming to run an Auskick Centre afterschool next term as we have in previous years. Auskick sessions will run afterschool on Mondays starting in week two. Web address; http://www.aflauskick.com.au/ Registration for Auskick is completed online. Reminder: It is important that all sports paperwork is handed in on time adhering to due dates. This helps to ensure the smooth running of teams and maximum participation for Yr 6-7 Girls and Boys Knockout Football Competition Crows Cup (Year 6/7 girls) Next Generation Academy Shield (Year 6/7 boys) These competitions are open to students in Years 6 and 7 and will be conducted on a Friday in Term Two. If you are interested in being part of a small-sided, competitive, AFL based competition, please see Mr Woods and fill in and return the paperwork (available from the front office) by this Thursday (Week 11).

SAPSASA U12 State Football Team Stuart Burns is the current coach of the SAPSASA U12 State footy team and will start to consider players for the team to travel to Darwin in August. Stuart is looking for students born in 2005 who are talented footballers. If you are a stand out footballer consider the SAPSASA website and nominate via the online form. Trials for the team will run initially from April 18 to 20 at Westminster School from 9am to 2pm. Talented footballers are urged to register for the trials. Stuart cannot accommodate every footballer in the state. The link below will take the students to the form: http://www.decd.sa.gov.au/sport/pages/sport/interstatesapsasa/ Stuart Burns - Deputy of Upper Primary - Westminster School * Ph: 8276 0245 * E: sburns@westminster.sa.edu.au * Trials for the Adelaide North East District SAPSASA Netball Team A number of senior netballers are taking part in these netball trials and aiming to be included in the district team that will compete against other SAPSASA Districts in a statewide carnival at Netball SA Headquarters, ETSA PARK (June 5 th 9 th ). Good luck for the rest of the selection process. Next Trial Date: Wednesday April 12 (4-5.00pm - Northfield Primary School) Coach: Melanie Arnold - melanie.arnold533@schools.sa.edu.au

Thank you! Thank you Sports Day supporters from all teams, those who visited on the day, and those who were involved on the field or behind the scenes. Congratulations this year s winners Best War Cry - Hartzer (Blue Team) Team Spirit - Hartzer (Blue Team) Champion Team - Chevalier (Red Team) Congratulations also to Andy and Brodie (Year 7) who both broke 3 minutes in the 800m event at Sports Day. Andy actually finished first in a time of 2:55. A counting error on the day meant that the boys ran 960m instead of 800m. Second Hand Sports Equipment Sale The sale of preloved school sports equipment at this year s Sports Day has indeed aided the recycling of sports equipment and has provided valuable dollars for the restocking of new sports equipment.

Canteen News A very BIG THANK YOU to all the wonderful families and individuals that generously donated items and their time to make the cake stall such a success on Sports Day. With much appreciation, Nives Grgic SECOND HAND UNIFORMS If you have any uniforms in fairly good condition that are not of use any more, please consider donating them to the Second Hand stall run by Nives Grgic (our Canteen Manageress). This service is proving to be popular and we would love to be able to continue it, however it is not possible without the generosity of our school community. As we are coming into the winter season, your child may have outgrown parts of their winter uniform from last year. Please place any uniforms (washed) in a plastic bag and label them Attention Nives Grgic and leave them in the Front Office. Reminders Term 2 commences on TUESDAY 2 MAY. Students are required to wear their full Winter Uniform.
