HKRU Report for SF&OC Council Meeting- to be presented by Kim Lam, Board member HKRU The Hong Kong Rugby Union has had a very active half year. Importantly in early November, we hosted the Asia Rugby Sevens Olympic Qualifier tournament at the HK Stadium. While it was a very successful tournament with more than 20,000 people attending, unfortunately both of our men s and women s teams failed to qualify. The Men were beaten in the final by Japan and the women, where there was an additional knock-out tournament in Tokyo two weeks later, also were beaten and took fourth place. This is not necessarily the end for both of our teams as there is a repachage tournament for the men in Monaco on June 18 th this year and for the women another opportunity in Dublin on June 25 th. On Feb 6 th in association with a French sports agency, we managed a very successful International 15s match between Racing 92 from France and the Highlanders from New Zealand at Siu Sai Wan Stadium. These teams were the champions in their respective hemisphere international competitions. It was also the first time that we had been able to conduct a rugby match at the Siu Sai Wan Stadium and it proved to be a very suitable venue. On the domestic scene, we have just completed the annual 15s season which was one of our most successful ever with a record number of players participating in rugby over the normal 5-month season. Also, we have conducted the last of our mini festivals for 2015/2016 and gained a record number of children participating with more than 6,000 young players involved. With the domestic season completed, we now move into the regional 15s season where the men will compete home and away to Japan and Korea in the Asian Rugby Championship and the women will compete in a similar competition against Japan and Kazakhstan. Clearly our focus for the next month is on the Hong Kong Sevens tournament. Again we host the 16 core teams of the HSBC World Sevens Series and in addition, we host a 12 team qualifying tournament where the winner joins next season s 16 core teams on the 10-city international tournament. We have also developed a free smartphone app which can be downloaded from the Apple store. Again, there is very strong interest in our Sevens and the stadium is completely sold out. We are pleased to advise that we have had very good communication with the Home Affairs Bureau s consultants regarding the proposed Kai Tak Stadium. Our CEO has also met with Brian Stevenson to further outline the HKRU s best options for the new sport precinct.
