A healthier Derbyshire The inaugural South Derbyshire Back to Netball tournament took place on Saturday 12th May. It was organised as part of the Healthier South Derbyshire event at Etwall Leisure Centre. Eight teams from Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Nottinghamshire took part in a friendly and fun filled event. Every match was highly competitive, but always played in the right spirit with teams playing for a top two place within their pool to secure their place in the semi-finals. NUH All Stars and Ashby NC contested one semi final whilst Etwall Lions and Etwall s Finest went head to head in the other. The final was a great spectacle and hard fought between NUH All Stars and Etwall Lions. It was evenly matched after the first period, however on home turf it was the Lions who had the upper hand eventually coming out on top. Julian Taylor, NDO for Derbys/Notts said: It was a fantastic event and the standard of netball was very high, considering some teams had been playing for just a few months. Marc Scott of South Derbyshire Sport said: I would like to say a huge thank you to all the teams for taking part in the tournament and making it a huge success and we look forward to holding another one in the Autumn.

News from around the Counties Leicestershire Melton Mowbray Netball Club took part in a charity tournament on Saturday 12 th May 2012 to raise money for Jasmin House, part of Women s Aid, in Loughborough. One member from Melton NC (Claire Attewell) was challenged by former colleagues (Team Monkey s) to play in a netball tournament to help raise the money. Word got around via facebook and before they knew it, more than 700 people had read the invitations. With just 5 sets of bibs and a few balls, Claire got the support of Val Kindred, Leicestershire Netball Development Officer to help with the event. On a sunny Saturday morning, players arrived and the first game was played, finishing 18-15 to Melton Sapphires. A shooting competition took place as well as mixed team games- you could hear the laughter and enjoyment across all the courts. The day finished with a BBQ back at Monkey s headquarters (the local) and former Tigers player Tom Smith donated a Leicester Tigers shirt to raise even more funds in an impromptu raffle! 850 was raised on the day and a challenge for a rematch has been issued by Monkeys, as they feel they have the hang of the rules and playing positions now!

News from around the Counties Northamptonshire cont... Netball promoted at Corby Sports Event Corby Borough Council and local sports clubs joined together to raise the profile of sports provision in the Corby area on the run up to the Olympics. Saturday 30th June saw a range of different sports (both Olympic and non Olympic) offer free come and try activities, demonstrations and recruited new members to their clubs. Kelly Walker, Northamptonshire Netball Development Officer promoted Back to Netball and advised about local opportunities to play netball. The Mayor of Corby, Councillor Mohammed Rahman, joined in the shooting practice and showed great enthusiasm for promoting sport in Corby. All participants who signed up were given a 'free' first session card and information on their local netball club. Kelly said 'It was a great day. We had a lot of interest from men who were keen to play mixed netball, but the focus was on Back to Netball and junior provision. Many women and girls took information and now we will hopefully see them at the sessions' Nottinghamshire Kelly Walker and Counsellor Rahman pictured left, and Cllr Rahman getting in some shooting practice above. On Wednesday 27th May a netball match was held in the glorious sunshine between Staff Sport Makers and those who play No Excuses Netball. The afternoon was a great collaboration of netball, sport makers, staff, BUCS members, No excuses (intra mural league) Sport Nottinghamshire and the Bridgford NC committee (Hannah and Sue volunteered their umpiring skills!) The sport makers came up with the idea and organised the event where there were a mix of abilities but overall everyone had great fun and a staff only game is being arranged through the sport makers!
