FOLLOW THE TROJANS All of USC's home matches are video- and audio-streamed live for free on USCTrojans.com, except for the 7 matches that are televised live on Pac-12 Networks (those matches only are audio-streamed). Most of USC's road matches are audiocast live on USCTrojans.com. USC's online announcers are ex-trojan player and assistant coach Mark Beltran and onetime Northeastern player/winthrop assistant coach Paul Duchesne. Fans can also follow USC matches through live stats at USCTrojans.com and via Twitter (@USCmen'svolley). Pac-12 Networks will carry the upcoming Pepperdine (Kevin Barnett, Dain Blanton announcing) and Stanford (Kevin Barnett, Al Scates) matches live. RANKINGS USC is ranked eighth in the current AVCA Division I-II Top 15 poll. Pepperdine is ranked No. 2 and Stanford is No. 12. OPPONENTS Pepperdine leads the series with USC, 61-38, including a pair of wins over Troy in 2014. The Waves visit Cal Baptist on Wednesday (Jan. 14) before visiting USC. The Trojans are 60-30 all-time against Stanford (its most wins against any opponent), but the Cardinal won the last 3 meetings, including twice in 2014. The Cardinal play at Cal Baptist on Friday (Jan. 16) before coming to USC. LAST MATCH Alex Slaught had 16 kills to lead No. 7 USC to a 23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 33-35, 15-9 non-conference win at Grand Canyon in the 2015 season opener for both squads on Jan. 7. Christopher Orenic added 14 kills, 7 blocks and 3 aces for the Trojans, while Robert Feathers had 11 kills and 5 blocks, Brooks Varni had 13 digs and Chris Lischke had 8 blocks off the bench filling in for Andy Benesh, who sprained an ankle early in the first set. USC served 7 aces and hit.256 to Grand Canyon's.173. USC couldn't hold a 13-9 lead in the first set, as GCU crept back to tie it at 19-19 and then scored 5 of the next 7 points to gain control of the set. The Trojans jumped out to a 4-0 and then 10-4 lead in the second set and never looked back. Troy held a 5-2 lead in the third set, but GCU later used a 5-0 run to go up 18-17 before USC restored order by scoring 8 of the set's final 11 points. USC could close out the marathon fourth set despite holding 18-13 and 24-22 leads. The Trojans were in control for the entire final set, leading 8-6 at the turn and then steadily pulling away for the victory.block by Benesh and Rivera ended the match. ERNIE EVENT/RETIRED JERSEYS Bob Yoder, who led USC to NCAA championships as a player (1977) and then as its head coach (1980), will be honored at the second annual The Ernie Event on Jan. 31 in the Founders Room at USC s Galen Center. The event is named after legendary former USC men s volleyball coach Ernie Hix, who is regarded as The Father of USC Men s Volleyball. Yoder, who this spring is being inducted into the 2015 class of the USC Athletic Hall of Fame, is the patriarch of the First Family of USC Volleyball (he is one of six Yoders to have played for Troy). For more information, contact uscmensvbboosters@gmail.com. On Jan. 30, the day prior to The Ernie Event, USC will host Cal State Northridge at 7 p.m. in the Galen Center. At the match, the jerseys of former Trojan National Players of the Year Tom Duke (1988) and Bryan Ivie (1990, 1991) will be retired.

FERGUSON It took ninth-year USC men's volleyball head coach Bill Ferguson just a short time to put the Trojans back on the volleyball map. He has a 132-93 career record at USC, with 3 trips to the NCAA Championships, 2 MPSF regular season crowns and an MPSF tourney title. He has gone 11-6 against crosstown rival UCLA. He twice has been named AVCA National Coach of the Year (2009 and 2012) and he was the 2011 MPSF Coach of the Year. CHRISTENSON The Trojans will revolve around 6-6 senior setter Micah Christenson, a three-year starter who was a 2014 All-American first teamer when he won the Lloy Ball Award (as the nation s top collegiate setter) and then started for the U.S. National Team that won the FIVB World League gold medal. Last season, he led the nation in assists average (11.62), and also led USC in assists (1,046) and aces (25) and was second in digs (210) and blocks (51). BACKUP SETTERS Backing up Christenson at setter are a pair of youngsters in 6-5 sophomore Michael Mullahey, who started all three matches in which he appeared last spring, and 6-3 redshirt freshman Jack Yoder. MIDDLE BLOCKERS USC is deep and experienced at middle blocker. Robert Feathers, a 6-8 senior who started in 2012 (when he was the National Blocker of the Year) and in 2013 then was a backup last season, appears ready to resume a starting role. A career.380 hitter with 248 blocks, he hit a USC rally scoring era record.453 last year. Sophomore Andy Benesh, at 6-8, was a 2014 Freshman All-American first team honoree while starting all season. He led USC s regulars in hitting percentage (.443) and blocks (91) while also getting 190 kills and 60 digs. He played with the U.S. Junior National Team this past summer. Also competing for time in the middle are 6-8 senior Chris Lischke, who had 16 starts last year, and juniors Tommy Leonard, who at 6-8 has 11 career starts (including nine last season), and 6-6 Tyler Cundiff, who has yet to play at USC. OPPOSITE HITTERS Cristian Rivera, a 6-6 senior with 26 career starts at opposite hitter and outside hitter, has emerged as the likely starter at opposite. He had seven starts there in 2014 and posted 89 kills, 37 digs and 14 blocks overall. Junior Josh Kirchner, at 6-6, has switched from middle blocker (where he has 13 career starts) to opposite hitter and has taken well to the move. Jon Rivera, a 6-5 freshman who like Cristian Rivera hails from Puerto Rico (they are not related), is also in the conversation at opposite hitter. Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola High School team to a pair of national championships and was his league s Player of the Year as a senior. He also played for the Puerto Rico Junior National Team and trained with the country s National Team. OUTSIDE HITTERS Outside hitter Lucas Yoder, a 6-4 sophomore, returns after being named the National and MPSF Freshman of the Year in 2014 when he had a team-best 394 kills while hitting.303, along with 111 digs, 33 blocks and 13 aces. He was sixth nationally in kills average last year (4.02). But Yoder got off to a slow start this past fall, so the starting outside jobs are up in the air. Among those challenging to start on the outside are 6-4 junior Alex Slaught and 6-3 soph Christopher Orenic. Slaught has 27 career starts, including the first 10 matches last year, while Orenic saw backup action in 14 matches last spring. There also is a trio of freshmen battling for time at outside hitter: 6-4 Jack Wyett of Laguna Beach (Calif.) High, who was a 2014 All-CIF Division II first team pick, 6-2 Larry Tuileta of Honolulu s (Hi.) Punahou School, where he was a threetime All-State outside hitter in volleyball (he was the National High School Player of the Year in 2014) and quarterback in football, and 6-6 Conor Inlow of Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach (Calif.). All three made the Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 list. Tuileta spent this past fall as a reserve quarterback on the Trojan football team. LIBEROS Junior Brooks Varni, at 6-2, will inherit the starting libero spot. He has appeared in 27 matches in his career, with nine starts. Backing Varni, and also available as defensive specialists, are 6-3 redshirt freshman Riley Mallon and 5-9 sophomore Vinnie Rios. Neither has played yet. ACADEMICS Eleven Trojans have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above: Cristian Rivera (3.84, international relations/comparative literature), Conor Inlow (3.50, international relations/global economy), Tyler Cundiff (3.45, political science/communication), Riley Mallon (3.45), Andy Benesh (3.39, human biology), Vinnie Rios (3.21, human biology), Robert Feathers (3.20, communication), Jack Yoder (3.16), Brooks Varni (3,10, communication), Jack Wyett (3.10) and Tommy Leonard (3.07, business administration). Rivera made the 2013 and 2014 MPSF All-Academic teams, while Feathers was honored in 2013. Rivera participated in the 2012 NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum. Cundiff, a National Merit Scholar and USC Presidential Scholar who is the executive editor of the USC Journal of Law and Society, went to Berlin in October of 2013 to present his research paper, "Hold The Line: the Anti-Nazi Work of the Writer-Activist Lion Feuchtwanger," to the International Feuchtwanger Society meeting. 2015 USC Men s Volleyball Page 3 YODERS: FIRST FAMILY OF USC VB Cousins Lucas Yoder and Jack Yoder are among 6 Yoders to play volleyball at USC and one of 8 Yoders to play collegiately: their uncle, Bob, was a 1977 All-American first teamer who led the Trojans to the NCAA title that season and then as USC s head coach for 8 seasons (1982-89) guided Troy to the 1988 NCAA championship; Lucas' late father, Dave, was a 1987 All- American second teamer who led USC to 3 NCAA Final appearances; their cousin, Erin, was a defensive specialist on the USC women s team (2009-12, including on a pair of NCAA Final Four teams); their cousin, Cory, was a 2011 All-American at UC Irvine and was a member of the Anteaters 2009 NCAA champions; Jack's brother, Paul, was a libero at USC (2011-14); and Lucas' sister, Molly, was a libero at UC Irvine (2011-14). RELATIVELY SPEAKING Micah Christenson's father, Robert, played basketball at Hawaii-Hilo and his mother, Charlene, played volleyball at Hawa i-hilo, where she won 3 national championships and was named a 2-time All- American...Robert Feathers' sister, Catherine, is a freshman setter at San Francisco State...Josh Kirchner's sister, Stephanie, was a middle hitter at Wisconsin-Platteville (2010-13)...Michael Mullahey's grandfather, Edward Mullahey, was swimmer at Iowa (1952-54)...Head coach Bill Ferguson's father, Tom, was a 2-time (1961-62) All-American at Santa Monica College, which won the USVBA college national championship both years...head coach Bill Ferguson's wife, Brenn, played collegiate volleyball at Washington State and UCLA (as Brenn Larson). VOLLEYBALL SCHOOL Besides the 4 NCAA crowns (1977-80-88-90) and 2 USVBA titles (1949-50) that USC s men have won, the Women of Troy have captured 6 national volleyball titles. USC s women won the AIAW trophy in 1976, 1977 and 1980, and the NCAA crown in 1981. Then, current coach Mick Haley s 2002 and 2003 Women of Troy squads captured the NCAA titles (the 2010 and 2011 teams made it to the NCAA Final Four). 2015 SIGNEES Four standout high school volleyball players--6-8 outside hitter Ryan Moss of Corona del Mar (Calif.) High, 6-7 middle blocker Tyler Resnick of Newbury Park (Calif.), 5-10 libero Matt Douglas of Loyola High in Los Angeles, Calif., and 6-2 outside hitter Woody Cook of Oak Park (Calif.) High--signed letters of intent with the USC men's volleyball team in the fall of 2014 and will join the Trojan program in the fall of 2015. Moss earned 2014 Orange County Register All-Orange County honorable mention notice as a junior. He also plays basketball at Corona del Mar. His Balboa Bay Volleyball Club won silver medals at the 2014 (Open 17) and 2013 (Open 16) Junior Olympics, and he made the All-Tournament team both years. Resnick, who also plays water polo at Newbury Park, was a member of the Bones Volleyball Club that won a bronze medal in the Open 17 division of the 2014 Junior Olympics. He was on the 2013 USA Volleyball Under 16 High Performance A1 Training Team. Douglas was a member of the USA Volleyball Under 17 Boys Youth National Team. His Santa Monica Beach Club team won a bronze medal in the Open 16 division of the 2013 Junior Olympics and he made the All-Tournament team. He also teamed with Woody Cook to win a gold medal in the Under 14 division of the 2011 AAU National Beach Volleyball Championships. His late grandfather, Jon Douglas, was a 2-sport star at Stanford, lettering at quarterback in 1956 to 1957 (he was the starter in 1957) and was the school's first All-American tennis player in 1957 and 1958 (he was the NCAA singles and doubles runner-up in 1958), then was ranked in the U.S. Top 10 from 1960 to 1962 and played on the 1958, 1961 and 1962 U.S. Davis Cup teams (he is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame). Cook was the 2014 All-Tri-Valley League MVP as a junior while getting 273 kills, 28 blocks, 89 digs and 14 aces. As a 2013 sophomore, he made the Ventura County Star All-County first team, Los Angeles Daily News All-Area second team and All-Tri-Valley League first team while posting 344 kills, 34 blocks, 91 digs and 23 aces. As a freshman in 2012, he was the Los Angeles Daily News Newcomer of the Year and made All- Tri-Valley League honorable mention with 99 kills, 20 blocks, 33 digs and 9 aces as Oak Park was the CIF Division II champion and California state runner-up.
