Marine Harvest Upper Island Riptide From then to now-the Riptide back story
From then to now: Conception Fall 2010, The Upper Island Riptide, like many famous football clubs was conceived in a pub! With the formation of the BCSPL Wave tier one team to represent the Island, it became apparent that the level between Tier one and B-cup would need to be expanded in order to develop players for the more competitive environment at tier one. Over the course of three or four meetings at the local pub the founders of VIPL in the Upper Island came up with the framework to present to the Member Clubs. The key components to the framework included; Open boundaries and player pathway established A set of guiding principles that form the UISA mission statement for VIPL Two geographically separated franchises Steering committee for each franchise with equal representation from each of it s clubs Players retain home club identity and support
From then to now: Governance There are two VIPL franchises in the Upper Island. Upper Island Storm and Upper Island Riptide. The Storm clubs consists of HCFC, OYSA, AVYSA,MIYSA and Gabriola. The Riptide combine CVUSC, CRYSA,PRYSA and North Island Soccer Association. Each franchise is operated by a Steering Committee and governed by a terms of reference Riptide Steering Committee: The membership of the VIPL North Zonal Committee shall be comprised of a minimum of 4 members to a maximum of 6 members. The Chair shall be a member of the UISA Executive. Each club in the north zonal region (Campbell River, Comox Valley, Powell River and North Island) shall appoint one representative from their membership. From time-to-time, the UISA executive in consultation with the North Zonal Committee Chair may appoint an advisor(s) to the committee, who shall participate as a nonvoting member of the Committee
From then to now: Philosophy Riptide Mission Statement: The Riptide Program is built on the UISA Vancouver Island Premier League (VIPL) Regional Team Program s three guiding principles: Attainability, Accessibility, and Player-Based. The Riptide program will allow Upper Island players the ability to move along a developmental pathway from our current Club/House system, up through our UISA Development Leagues, and into the Riptide program. This will ensure the small step up to the EA Sports BC Soccer Premier League is attainable for our Riptide players.
From then to now: Player Pathway Open boundaries and Player pathway; In an effort to make sure all players in the Upper Island District had a chance to play VIPL the decision was made to have open boundaries at this level. No matter where a player lives they have the opportunity to be evaluated for both the Riptide and Storm. The elimination of club boundaries, the formation of the Vancouver Island Premier League and the two UISA franchises solidified the player pathway from Club to BCSPL.

Hi Shel, Sincerely, Johanne, Ernie and Olivia Olivia s Athletic Scholarship paperwork was signed, scanned and emailed back to Graham Kennedy (Head Coach) of the St Francis Xavier Women Soccer team Feb 12, 2018 after a family teleconference. The Roster announcement press release will be coming out in the next few weeks. I have asked Graham to send me the link when it comes out and will forward it to you. The deal essentially involves a 5 years Athletic-Student Varsity women s soccer exclusive commitment at St Francis Xavier (StFX) in Antigonish Nova Scotia. Graham is most interested in her Left Foot and her leadership potential. Graham seems to feel Olivia is Top 11 material. He has little turn over this season but 6-7 players in Olivia s year 2. Graham has signed her as a rostered player. StFX last won the Eastern conference in 2016. In addition to the basic Athletic-Student scholarship commitment Graham is also ensuring guaranteed entry to the StFX Leadership Academy in year two (for years 2, 3 and 4). This is an Internationally recognized Leadership Certificate; many important people come to StFX just to take this program. It would be a certificate on top of her Bachelors of Arts and Science in Health which is the program she is enrolled in. Olivia s plans are to potentially finish these programs then pursue paths in Medicine or Biochemical Nutrition. Thank you so very much for your program and all that it will always meant to our family. We could have moved to Victoria years ago but for us soccer in the Comox Valley far surpassed elsewhere and was a better fit for Olivia. As an original U14 Riptide, and an active player all these years, I think our family can validate that your program has provided tremendous growth opportunity on many levels. Olivia has always been a multi-sport athlete. To be able to remain in the Valley and engage in this level of soccer without having to choose soccer and drop everything else IS Oliva. You should be very proud of what this program has achieved over these years. Thank you Shel.
