Please pay close attention to the contents of this package as it will provide important details to assist in your preparations for the symposium. Hotel Accommodations: The symposium will be held at the Brazos County Expo Complex, located northwest of College Station, Texas. Below are recommended hotels as well as their code for the room blocks. Please note that there are no hotels located near the Expo Complex and no shuttles will be provided so be sure to plan transportation to and from the Expo Complex. Additionally, please note that the local convention and visitor s bureau have agreed to provide financial incentives associated with the total number of room nights utilized during the symposium. Competition Rules and Information The 2018 Texas-Mexico ASCE Texas Symposium will be held at the Brazos County Expo Complex. Brazos County Expo Complex 5827 Leonard Rd. Bryan, TX 77807 Concrete Canoe: The Concrete Canoe races and swamp test will be held at Lake Bryan. Lake Bryan 8200 Sandy Point Rd. Miscellaneous Competitions: Concrete Bowling: Competition Bowling Rules and Information: The USBC bowling rules apply in this competition. (For reference, check chapter 2 in the USBC game rules http://www.bowl.com/rules/) Each team will bowl 4 times having 9 throws maximum. Standard pins will be used for the competition. Throwing area (the lane) will be made out of plywood to protect the floor and the concrete balls from damage. If there s any ties between teams, the poster will be the tiebreaker (see Presentation below). 2018 ASCE Texas Student Symposium Page 5 Mailer II

Design and Construction Rules The bowling ball should resemble an actual bowling ball, which means it has to be spherical. The bowling ball shouldn t exceed 18 lbs. The ball should have a minimum of 7 and maximum of 9 in diameter. Mixtures can t be premixed or prepackaged cement. It has to be composed of minimal 60% hydraulic (Portland) cement. You may use a reinforcement (mesh) but it cannot be visible outside the ball. Presentation: Each team should have a 24 X 36 size poster that should include: School s name Mix design Materials and construction steps Professional attendees will judge the poster. Score Criteria: Durability (40 pts.): If ball losses 40% of total mass, the team will be disqualified If a ball is damaged, it may continue but it must be rolled to hit the pins. Durability measurement = [weight of remaining ball/weight of ball before participating] X 40 Aesthetics (40 pts.): The ball will be judged at the beginning of the competition. Bowling Score (120 pts.): This depends on your performance during the competition. Each throw has a maximum of 30 points. Concrete Frisbee: Competition Frisbee Rules and Information Each team needs to fabricate 5 Frisbees with the same concrete mixture and design. One Frisbee, picked at random, will be selected for inspection. The other 4 Frisbees will be thrown during the distance and accuracy test. Design and Construction Rules The diameter of the Frisbee must be greater than 8 inches but no more than 12 inches. The height of the Frisbee must not be greater than 2.5 inches. No prepacked or pre-mixture concrete can be used, the Frisbee mixture must be at least 60% hydraulic Portland cement. Reinforcement (mesh) may be used for the Frisbee but it must not be visible. In the event the Frisbee breaks and the mesh shows, no points will be taken off. Presentation Each team must have a 24 x 26 poster that includes: 1. School s name 2. Mix design 3. The construction methods and materials used Aesthetics on Frisbee and poster will be judged by professionals Score Criteria 1. Durability (20pts. 5pts each): Frisbees losing 20% of its total weight will be disqualified. Each Frisbee will be thrown one time. Durability formula: i. = (Weight of Frisbee/Weight of Frisbee after thrown) x 5 2. Aesthetics (20 pts): Will be judged before Frisbee is thrown 3. Distance: Two of the Frisbees will be thrown and the longest scored will count toward the final score. The Frisbee must land within the boundaries set on the throwing area and maintain at least 80% of its initial weight. 4. Accuracy (30 pts. 15 each): Two of the Frisbees will be thrown Participants will throw the Frisbee into the designated marked areas. count if parts of the Frisbee are within the marked area, it must be the Frisbee itself: Accuracy Formula: i. = [Target length/(target length + Distance of target to disk)] x 15 5. ASCE National Eligibility Requirements 1. Be in good standing with ASCE: a. Have submitted their Annual Report and paid their Annual Dues, as received by ASCE, prior to the start of the Student Conference; and FOR CONCRETE CANOE ONLY - Have submitted their student chapter full Annual Report in time to be graded (reports submitted on or before February 1, 2018 meet this qualification), and have scored within the top two-thirds (2/3) of all student chapters. Student Chapters that submit an EZ annual reporting form do not qualify; and b. Act appropriately. As representatives of ASCE and the civil engineering profession, all competition and conference participants are expected to and must act professionally and courteously. The use of alcohol, marijuana, or other controlled substance is strictly prohibited. Note: Invitations to Conference and National Competitions are a privilege, not a right. Failure to act appropriately can result in letters of reprimand, mandatory behavior management plans, and loss of invitations to further competition for individual institutions and/or entire conferences. 2. Attend and participate in their assigned Student Conference as shown through their school's: a. Good faith participation in the Student Conference Business Meeting (at least one (1) student representative present at the start of the Business Meeting); b. Good faith participation in the Student Conference Paper Competition, including submission and presentation by at least one (1) member of the ASCE Student Chapter, not necessarily a member of the concrete canoe team; and c. Meeting any additional requirements of Student Conference participation set by the Student Conference at the previous year s business meeting or in their written and approved by-laws, standing rules, or constitution. 2018 ASCE Texas Student Symposium Page 10 Mailer II
