CC United Recreational Curriculum

Thank you I want to take this time to thank you for stepping up to coach. I hope this curriculum makes it is easier and you as a parent coach want to return! The journey of an 8 week season can only be evaluated in two places: 1. How much fun the kids have on your team 2. Their improved ability to work together CC United s goal is to create a child centered environment where kids gain confidence by a soccer discovery journey. Along the way they learn to solve problems that practice and the game environment brings. The most important thing we do at the club is to: Provide that practice environment. Help our coaches present it in a certain way Educate in the importance of the correct game environment Educate our parents in the process Once these things are in place you will see our children growing within the sport and you will have just as much fun as them! Thank you, Jonathan Tudor

What is my style of coaching? 1 st and 2 nd grade challenge and see Start to get competitive Do everything without the ball first Let the kids figure out all problems Highlight the ones that have a way and challenge others to find a way Change the areas of games to gain more challenges Be ready to provide specific pressure to specific players On game days allow the players to discover things Praise players that work in pairs On game days have a larger criteria for team success Who can make the biggest pass/ best dribble/is the most open

Who are you coaching? Psychosocial Cognitive Psychomotor Just starting to appreciate team mates. Can work with one-two others. Self-concept and body image are beginning to develop, but are fragile. Great need for approval from adults such as parents, teachers, and coaches; like to show individual skills. Easily bruised psychologically by adults; negative comments carry great weight. Like to play soccer because it is fun. Intrinsically motivated. Play for their own enjoyment. True playmates emerge with the inclination toward small group activities. Team identity is limited; I play on Coach Tom s team or I play on the Tigers. There is a desire for social acceptance; they want everyone to like them. The influential person is most likely their father or significant parent. Can understand games that involves another person. Language vastly expands and ability to recall previous events is enhanced. Show a limited ability to tend to more than one task at a time; the simple task of controlling the ball demands most of the attention capacity, thereby leaving little or no capacity for tactical decision making. Understanding of the relationship between time and space is beginning to develop and will be limited by the individual player s capacity to attend to multiple tasks. Show limited experience with understanding personal evaluation; effort is synonymous with performance; they feel if they tried hard, they performed well, regardless of performance. Skeletal system is still growing; growth plates are near the joints. Be aware of possible injuries to those areas. Cardiovascular system is less efficient than an adults; a child s heart rate peaks sooner and takes longer to recover. Temperature regulation system is less efficient than adults; children elevate their core temperature more quickly and take longer to cool down than an adult. Won t understand physical boundaries in terms of exhaustion or over heating. May be clumsy and as the child has developed size or weight this may lead to injuries.

What is my style of coaching? Behavioral How you coach it Game importance High Moral and Ethical Standards. Be an appropriate role model. Honesty. Be fair, no one likes it if you cheat. Communication. Appropriate verbal and nonverbal responses (body language & gestures). Appropriate language (words, tone, volume, rhythm, articulation). Development of an Appropriate Temperament for Coaching Children Be sensitive to each child. Observe and Guide; Don t Direct. Use your normal voice, not a whistle. Be prepared. Organized. Appropriate and inappropriate behavior/enforce team rules. Learn to be critical of behavior, not a player s personality. Be Enthusiastic. Your enthusiasm is contagious. Celebrate! Have a Good Sense of Humor. Keep things light. Smile and laugh. Use the players as demonstrators. Coach the rules and objectives of the game and let the players solve the problems. Make all activities go from hands to feet. Demonstrate in the game of soccer a way to be successful. Comment on players who have solved the problem or show individuality. In games, don t emphasize the scoring over the process of getting the ball near the goal. Be ready to adapt and challenge the players further with a game progression. This age will show a difference in ability. Can you adapt pressure? Sit down and enjoy watching our children grow. Let what the kids do motivate you positively developing high levels of selfconfidence. Positive coaching. Don t yell. See how much they can figure out directional and ball in and out of play. Use guided discovery. This age is vital to have the parents preach the same environment that you do. Sit on the parents side for games. Make sure that all are watching and not directing. Notice what each player did from work hard to get open to make a long pass.

Goals and Objectives 1 st and 2 nd Grade Team Ability to work together Ability to recognize player positives Effort Attitude Spatial awareness Ability Player Ability to self play Ability to change direction with the ball Ability to pass the ball Awareness of open player Engaged with the game Game Knowledge of Boundaries Knowledge of restarts Goalkeeping

What to coach Week 1 st and 2 nd 1 Dribbling general Team building 2 Turning with the ball 3 Comfort on the ball 4 Shielding 5 Stop start dribbling 6 Kicking 7 Passing 8 Dribbling - general 9 Shooting 10 Team games For weeks 1-3 2 nd grade up coaches should do a 60/40 split in practice of skills and scrimmage with rules All team shape should be done 15 minutes prior to game time on game day

Dribbling Monster Island Area 30x40 Randomly placed 3 yard houses and an island in the middle. Players have one ball each in their hand, have to go into the island, collect fruit and return to a house. Players now try to get across Soccer island with a monster inside. Monsters can t leave the island. M M M If a player s soccer balls are caught by monsters they change places with a monster. Progressions 1. Add more monsters 2. Add monsters outside of island players are safe in houses 3. Take away the safe houses Tips show movement of tiptoeing in with ball in hands and being aware of the monster Show change of speed to get in and out

P Dribbling P Pacman Technique Dribbling, Passing Area 20x30 Two Pacman with a ball, all others without. Pacman carry their ball and try to roll it and hit a player below the knees. If a player gets hit with the ball they join the Pacman team. The winner is the last player to be caught. Progression: 1. Don t allow all Pacman to have a ball to promote passing and team work. 2. Everyone has a ball each and Pacman must pass their ball and hit another ball to catch people. On this one use vests for Pacman Tips encourage change of speed from stop- go/ fast-slow Encourage both the Pacman and the players to get together and form plans on how not to get caught. Although this is an elimination game all players are active and the ones that need more time on the ball get it.

Turning Everybody's It Area 20x20 yard square In a restricted area players attempt to tag as many different players as possible in 30 seconds. Variations Have the players tag a specific body part to give them the opportunity to turn away Progression1 Players must tag as many players as possible without letting anyone tag them Progression 2 Ball each-with their ball in their hands players must try to tag as many soccer balls with their hands without letting anyone tag theirs Progression 3 Players must tag as many soccer balls as possible using their feet Progression 4 To be successful in this environment players must turn away Have only 2 players be the taggers and they must tag as many as possible Freeze Tag Tips- can the players move close to a player and as they try to tag turn away

Turning Bullfight Area 20 yards square with 4 goals Two teams Coach serves ball into the middle and players play 1v1 Players score by dribbling through the front or back of any of the 4 goals The field has no boundaries Variations Have the players numbered and call out an number Progression 1 If the player does a turn and scores a goal they receive one extra goal C Progression 2 If the player does a turn and their team shouts Ole they receive an extra point Progression 3 Have 2 players go out at the same time Tips Try to get the players to use the goals as a decoy to fake out their opponent

Shielding C C Area 30x20 Each player has a ball and runs around the area with it in their hands 1. The coach tries to tag their ball Allow the players to get comfortable with the exercise moving around the area 2. Add in another parent or coach to do the same thing 3. Now play the same game with the feet Tips Encourage the players to taunt the coach and get as close as possible and turn away at the last moment Game Ketchup C All players have 1 tomato and must move it around the field 1. The coach is coming to try and make ketchup out of their tomato by dropping his ball onto theirs 2. Add in players that can also make ketchup 3. Encourage the players to hide their tomatoes so that the coach can t make ketchup Tips- have the players make ketchup as soon as possible and the coach demonstrates how to hide (shield the ball)

Stop start dribbling Cat and Mouse Area 30x20 with 2 yard gates All players have 1 gate except 3 players one is a cat two are mice All gates can only fit one player 1. Without a ball the two mice run around and get safe by going in a gate On arriving the mouse inside has to leave the area Allow the players to get comfortable with the exercise 2. Have players ready to run when mouse comes into gate in front or behind 3. All players now have a ball and carry the ball in their hands then feet 4. To vary it have only the mice on the outside have a ball 5. Now we add pressure (light) with the coach (Cat) who doesn t have a ball If the cat gets a ball he turns to a mouse and tries to get safe Once they are comfortable add another Cat and take away a house Allow them to pass ball from house to house Tips encourage kids to get away from mouse and praise those who go out back when ball comes in the front. With no gates, kids work on spatial awareness and the activity turns into a possession game

Stop start dribbling R R R Coaching Moment Encourage little touches when moving with the ball How Long Left Referee Area 10x130 yards This is played like red light green light Players have to get from one side of the field to the other without the referee (coach) seeing them The players shout out HOW LONG LEFT REF? and the referee gives them a time in seconds and turns away When the referee turns back around if they see anyone moving they send them back to the start If the referee sees a ball moving they get sent back to the start Variations Referee calls out :INJURY TIME and the players fake an injury. If it is not convincing then they go back to the start. Referee calls out LOOK OUT COLLEGE SCOUT and the players impress the scout with some fancy footwork. Progression 1 Have the first 2 players that make it, become the referee

Stop Start dribbling Me and My Shadow Area 20x20 Square In a restricted area in pairs the front player runs around and tries to keep the second player out of their shadow When the coach says change they switch roles Me and My Shadow with a Ball each Area 20x20 Square In a restricted area in pairs with a ball each the front player runs around and tries to keep the second player out of their shadow When the coach says change they switch roles Tips- show the players how to stop, start, change speed and direction

Dribbling R Game 2 How long left Referee R R Coaching Moment Encourage little touches when moving with the ball Area 10x130 yards This is played like red light green light The players have to get from one side of the field to the other without the referee( coach) seeing them The players shout out HOW LONG LEFT REFF and the referee gives them a time in seconds and turns away When the referee turns back around if they see anyone moving they send them back to the start If the referee sees a ball moving then they get sent back to the start Variations Referee calls out :INJURY TIME and the players fake an injury. If it is not convincing then they go back to the start Referee calls out LOOK OUT COLLEGE SCOUT and the players impress the scout with some fancy footwork Progression 1 After a couple of Have the 1 st 2 players that make it referee

Dribbling changing direction Treasure Treasure Crossing the Crab River Area 20x30 treasure square at one end (be creative) One crab sat in the middle of the river Players dribble past the crab to the treasure chest On reaching the treasure they bring it back home If crabs win back ball they send treasure back to chest Have crabs sitting down at first Progression - add more crabs Treasure Trail Area 20x30 split into 6 areas One crab/defender in each square Two players start and attempt to dribble up one side of the jungle with their key (Ball) to the treasure (Pinnies). On reaching the treasure they must return through the other side of the jungle. If crab gets key they throw it away and player returns to start Crabs move on their hands and feet to begin with Tips - keep ball moving/ change pace and direction

Kicking Clean your room Area Game field divided with a 5 yard halfway line Each team restricted to their room(half) and sends all rubbish (soccer balls) across to the other side When the coach yells parents are home the team with the cleanest room wins the game. Make middle area and field larger Have only one player per team who can clean the room/ Add defender trying to stop other team from cleaning room Clean your room with side goals Red team scores in side goals Blue team scores through middle Make middle area and field larger Add Goalkeepers

Passing Golf Area 10 yards apart ball between 2 Players try to kick the ball through their partners open legs Increase distance/ have one player do jump jacks Moving Goals Area 30x40 yards with pairs creating a goal by holding a pinnie with outstretched arms Player work in pairs and must pass the ball through as many goals as possible Teams must score 3 times at a goal before moving onto the next Goals can walk around Tips hit the technique of passing- ankle locked follow through Try to get the kids to swing their leg and stop the swing when the knee comes up level with the waist

Passing Pacman Area 30 x15 (game field ) 1 ball per 2 players and enough pinnies for 1 each The game starts with 2 pacmen in pinnies The objective is for the pacmen to pass the ball and hit the non pacmen below the waist with the ball. When a player is hit with the ball they put on a pinnie and Join the pacmen team Every 2 pacmen will make the coach serve in another ball The last remaining player is the winner Progression (older players) When in possession of the ball the players cannot run So the rely on the of the ball movement of team mates Tips Encourage the Pacmen to pass to each other

Passing Target passing game Area 30 yards square with a halfway line Halfway line has cones or balls stood up on cones Players pass their ball and try to knock down the cones/balls in the middle. On Knocking one down they bring it to their team The team with the most cones/balls wins the game D Take away one of the shooting balls per team Add in one defender who defends the cones Reduce shooting balls to one for each team Players must stay in their half but are allowed in the area and must try to knock down the cones D Tips This exercise begins technically (execution) and then goes tactically (when to Pass and support)

Passing Towers Down Area 30x20 each team has 2 towers - 6 cones with one piled on top A five yard river on the outside A line in the middle separating the two teams As many balls as possible Teams try to knock down the opponents towers If they get knocked down teams can rebuild them Team come up with a plan of how they will play the game Progression 1 Allow players to dribble in the river to get closer to the other teams towers Progression 2 Coaching point: Allow teams to make a plan Highlight the players still using good technique Add a river around the back of the teams

Planning my Practice Be Organized Have a plan and make it progress simple to complex Use the website as a resource Characteristics of Game/Activities Dynamic Organized but unstructured Free Movement Fun Decision Making Age Appropriate
