Collection Of Milk Collect the milk from the mare in the evening so that you can start to figure the time of foaling within 12 hours. For example, if you test at 10:00 pm and get a positive reading indicating that she will foal, you know you will most likely have a foal by 10:00 am the following morning. Some mares object to having their milk collected. Be sure and massage her udder the weeks prior and get her used to being touched on the udder. This should make it easier to collect. Also, using warm towels to relax her udder will help collect it more readily. Start at the top of the teat and squeeze down towards the end of the teat. Remember, you only have to obtain a small amount of milk, approximately a teaspoon full, so don t worry about getting a lot. If you are having trouble getting any secretion at all, you are probably testing too soon, and need to wait a few days. Directions For Use Mix 1/2 ml. of mare s milk to 3 ml. of the testing solution. Gently shake back and forth to mix thoroughly. Dip test strip into mixture for 5 seconds, and remove. Gently shake off excess water, and wait one minute. Compare the color of the strip to the chart on the bottle. The scale is left to right. If your test strip matches the test strip colors on the bottle, foaling is probable within 12-24 hours. It is important to test your mare prior to her due date so that you can get a feel for how she is progressing once you start getting color change from right to left on the test bottle. The mare should be in the foaling range AND have the color of 95% to mean that she is most likely to foal in the next 12 hours. Having both colors at the far left on the chart is the means foaling is very near. Page 7 Page 4

How The Test Strips Work The day of foaling can be anticipated by monitoring color changes throughout the strip s four color zones. It is also important to make note of whether your mare is in the foaling or non-foaling range as indicated by the top color chart. While very accurate, as with any biological Name of product or service system, exceptions are encountered, and no test can be expected to provide completely accurate and reliable results all of the time, in all situations. This is an aid to your foaling management program, and is not intended to guarantee a successful outcome in all mares. Not only does the color of your test strip matter, but take note of the time Name that of product it takes or for service your color change. For example, if it takes a full minute for the test to indicate foaling on both color strips, you will have a longer wait than if it only took a few seconds for the color change to develop, indicating that the mare is closer to foaling. We offer online support at: www.mothernatureskit.com Name of product or service Disclaimer: Mother Natures Miniatures, LLC cannot be responsible for erroneous test results or the death or injury of a mare or foal that is being tested with this kit. Responsibility of using the test correctly is that of the person conducting the test on said animal and Mother Natures Miniatures, LLC cannot be liable. Mare s Milk Stages Prior To Foaling It is very important to rinse out your syringe by taking it apart, the collection cup, and your test tube each time you use them with distilled water and dry with a paper towel to remove any residue that might affect the test. Here are the stages the mare s milk will go through so that you will know that she is getting closer. It will not affect the milk in any way to draw a small amount out to check. Remember: not all mares follow this, especially maiden mares, so do watch your horse closely. If you have any questions or concerns, your veterinarian is your best source. The mare s milk stages: 1. clear and watery, to 2. thin but cloudy, to 3. yellow-tinged and increasing in viscosity, like floor wax, to 4. definitely amber-colored and syrupy-thick, to 5. skim milk, to 6. opaque white milk Page 5 Page 6
