4 Shamrock Newsletter October is Fund-a-Future Month at St. Apollinaris! The results of our survey are in! Thank you to all of the families that took the time to share with us your thoughts on the special projects/infrastructure updates that our school needs. We greatly appreciate your responses and deeply value your input and involvement. Throughout the month of October, we will be focusing on our Fund-a-Future projects. During this time, we will be working hard to raise money to complete the two projects on the list that received the most parent votes and then to continue to collect funds for each additional project based upon the survey results. Our overall goal to complete the first two projects on the list the remodel of the 2 nd -8 th grade bathrooms and security cameras/school wiring updates is to raise $70,000. This is an ambitious number, but with your commitment and help, we can achieve it. If each family at St. Apollinaris donates $350, we will reach our goal! For every $100 you donate, you will receive an entry for a drawing to win a nine-course meal for two at the French Laundry! Please be generous, and pass this link on to your family and friends. The 7 th Grade Girl s Team went across town to St. John Lutheran s gym to take on St. Mary s on Saturday for their final game of the regular season. St. Mary s came out strongly and never let the Shamrocks get into a rhythm, taking the first game 25-9 and the second 25-11. On Tuesday the girls travelled to Santa Rosa for their playoff match against one of the top teams St. Rose at their home gym. The girls played with a lot of enthusiasm and spirit, but feel behind early with all the 50/50 balls seemingly going St. Rose s way. Down 24-9, Ava Capaz came onto serve and won six points on the trot before St. Rose finally took the game 25-15. Ava started the serving again in the second game and the Shamrocks carried on from where they left off the first game, taking an early lead. They held the lead until St. Rose tied the game at 16-16 and then snuck a point ahead, but the Shamrock s dug deep and came back to win the game 25-20 and tie

6 Shamrock Newsletter the match. The deciding third game started in a similar tight fashion with the game at one point tied 6 all, and shortly after the St. A s down just 7 to 8, before St. Rose s number one server came on and with the some great serving led St. Rose to a 15-7 victory to take the match. Despite the defeat the girl s efforts in the play-off was one of their best of the season. In addition to Ava s serving, Mikayla Holcomb also served well while Natalie Bui and Isabel McEvoy were strong with their digging around the court and Brooklyn Carter, Gianna Giorsetto and Alice Bourke provided solid and enthusiastic support. The girls put in a great effort all season, with a roster of only seven and several games with only six meaning few had a rest on game days. For many this was their first competitive volleyball season and they showed a lot of determination in learning the game while still having fun. Despite losing their playoff game, they finished the season exhibiting a good level of skills and great level of enthusiasm for the game to hopefully return next year and represent St. A s proudly in 8 th Grade. The 8 th Grade Girl s Team ended the season 12-4, second place for the CSL league play. Unfortunately we were beset by injuries, losing two of our players for the last two matches as well as the playoffs. We played St. Vincent for our first playoff match, winning 27-25, 25-6. The match was very exciting with lots of back and forth play. Our second playoff match vs. St. Helena Montessori went the distance with excitement and great volleyball. We went three games and came up just short in the third game, 25-23, 7-25, 12-15. Every team member contributed to our effort: runs of serves from Gabrielle, Sofia L, Jillian, Lizzie and Rachel, hitting from Jillian with sets from Lizzie and Sophia N, solid digs and blocks from the entire team, steady serves from Abigail, Hannah, Hilary, Kendall and a great run of eight serves from Anna, excellent defensive efforts from Hilary and bumps from Vanessa. I would like to congratulate our 8th grade girl s volleyball team for their season this year. They played very well as a team and with good sportsmanship throughout the season. Almost the entire team has played together since 5th grade and developed into a great team and group of athletes. They should be very proud of their four years of volleyball. I would also like to recognize coaches Jackie Bodor and Lissette Quintanilla who have coached with me for the last four years as well. They have been essential to the team since 5th grade. Thank you to parents, classmates, Mr. Buckner, Mrs. Brazil and the St. A s community for all of your support this season, especially for the last two matches in our own gym. We offer our endless gratitude to our volleyball coaches, Erica Conway, Phil Bourke, Mike George, Jackie Bodor and Lissette Quintanilla, for their time, expertise and dedication to our student athletes!
