Commodore Sterling Lau Hi Folks! It s time for all of us to get back on the trail of attracting new members into joining us at our wonderful club. It s fantastic that our club has people of character who somehow appear and take up the slack when many of us are called away to attend to important, but time consuming distractions. In this case, that particular person is none other than our Rear Commodore of Power, Robbie Santanello. During our quiet March Madness Membership Meeting, it was revealed that Robbie had sponsored 3 new members, Michael Pitts, Calvin Maeda, and George Longshore, all of whom were warmly welcomed into our family. He has two more members to-be, standing in line for induction into the club during the month of April. Yes indeed, this Robbie guy bears watchin and maybe imitatin by the rest of us. I never noticed him before, did you? Angry town-folk in black, with pitchforks and bearing torches have been rattling my door at night, and moaning Whine Teshting Ohh! You mean Wine Tasting? Right, right, Nick is putting it together, and it should be back soon and available for the masses. Beer Tasting too. The family spirit is still alive and thriving at HYC with Bob Cochrane and Tim Ryan going all out in renovating the ladies restroom on the upper deck. A couple of weeks ago, the walls looked pretty bad with 3 layers of wall paper that needed to be virtually chipped out, but our guys did it, and at this point everything in the Ladies Room looks white, tight, and smooth as silk. The work is progressing very well, and coming in under budget. Our hat s off to Bob and Tim. The Kayak/Surfboard racks are also visualized to be renovated and refurbished for member rental purposes, and Planning Chairman Jim Bixby will be consulted for plans and relocation ideas. That s all she wrote this month folks. See you at the club. Sterling Lau Commodore 4

Vice Commodore Patti Naiyoke Hello Everyone! March was a fun month and things are slowing down. Our St. Patrick s Day was a blast. Thanks to Beth Mavestiti for all the decorating. Chef Alfredo and his Staff did a great menu plus ONO Corn Beef and Cabbage. We were entertained with the Celtic Bagpipes and Dancers. Great fun for all was had. Upstairs galley was completely full and we had to bring in extra tables. Plus the Cruising and Voyaging Club filled up the downstairs with their monthly event. Great bands are playing each Friday night with dancing and dining, also Howie burgers on the down stairs BBQ. Saturday night entertainment is easy listening music for your dinning and dancing pleasure. April start out with a bang. Brunch with regular menu and lots of Easter specials for all. Hat parade and maybe ship s store models. If you missed the Valentine s Day, you won t to miss this one. Also the petting Zoo with bunnies and chicks will be on the lower level. Easter egg hunt and refreshments will be served. This all takes place between 10:00-12:00am, so you can take you family upstairs for brunch. So you all there, let s make it a great family day. It almost seems like the good old times. I know we all need change, but some things are hard to improve upon. It is so great to see old and new members enjoying the club and activities. Keep showing up and there will again be a waiting time to join our club. Rear Commodore for Power Robbie Santanello Fishing Aloha! Thanks for the tremendous turnout for the 5th Annual Mitch s Sushi shootout, we had 43 boats compete and a great time was had by all. The big winner was The Wild Bunch with a 417 pound Marlin. Congrats to all of the winners in the contest. A special thanks to Steinlager and Paradise Beverages for their contributions in the tournament, great prizes and great beverages. The biggest Mahalo goes to Craig Mitchell and his crew that put this tournament on. These folks worked endless hours making it all happen and it was a happening event! Craig thank you so very much! I want touch in another subject while I am at it and that is the volunteers that work hard to put this event on. Robbie Buck, Lynn Silva, Howie Mednick and the club manager Nick Wontenko without him this would be a mess thanks Nick. And of course my trusted teacher and mentor Al Bento! In April we have the Senoritas fishing tourney on the 24th and 25th with the skippers meeting on the 22nd the prior Thursday. Please get your entries in by the 22nd as that is the cutoff date for this contest and we will only be taking 30 boats so don t be late and miss out. Remember keep bait on your hooks and your hooks in the water. Robbie 8

Scott Melander Jr.. Sailing Aloha! Thanks to all that helped out at the Boat Expo at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. We had a small turnout on Sat the 27 ( I think the Tsunami warning had something to do about it) and a great showing on Sunday. Linda West, Tracy Woodrow, Ailana Warren, and Katie Merrill helped for the two days along with other club members that stopped by. Kaneohe Yacht Club hosted the first youth sailing invitational of the year on March 6. The sailors had good breeze on the bay with Mitchell Woodrow, Laura Hughes, Morgan Merrill and Kukii Falahee sailing in el toros and lasers. Summer sailing is just around the corner and we have sessions beginning June 1 for our weekday sailing classes. There s more information on our website and in the office. The schooner Makani Olu will be at HYC s dock on Sunday April 18 for those who would like to see a large sail training vessel in action. She is usually moored in Kaneohe Bay and is owned by the Marimed Foundation. She is a three masted staysail schooner and sails the Hawaiian Islands with cadets from the residential youth program. Above _ Sailors Paris & Yassmin Adult sailing lessons in our Cal 20 and 420 fleets are offered on a continuing basis and we have a new groups starting each month. Aloha Racers! This past month proved to be great fun with the first annual Kaneohe Rum Run. The racing was great and the parties were even better. A big thanks to Steinlager for the Beer Garden provided after the race on Sunday. I think the Kaneohe Rum Run will grow larger every year thanks to our gracious host KYC and all the volunteers who made it happen. Coming up in April we have the Lipton Challenge Cup One. The Hawaii Yacht Club will be represented by the J-35 Harvey owned by Peter Richards. Big thanks to Peter for letting the yacht club use his fine vessel. We also have the Spring Regatta on Saturday April 3rd. This race will be the first buoy banger of the year for HYC and is always a great time. Marienne McClure Membership Colleen VanRisseghern Michael Omohundro George Longshore Michael Pitts Dennis & Kera Kumagai Aloha HYC Members! In the month of March we inducted five new members and have a potential four more on the way to being members in April! The ball is rolling our way! Welcome aboard and Aloha to Michael Omohundro, Dennis Kumagai, George Longshore, Colleen Van Risseghern and Mike Pitts, new regular members of HYC! I would like to acknowledge Robbie Santanello, Rear Commodore for Power, for introducing three of the five new members for March! Thank you so much Robbie! I am also honored to say that Tim Rhey was unanimously voted to be an Honorary Life Member during the General Meeting on Tuesday, March 16th! It is truly inspiring just to hear about Tim and all he has done...we should all have done it long ago. Congratulations Tim Rhey! We have a new membership wheel poster that was done by our artist member Robin Burton called Sail into Membership! We have 100 spots on the ship s wheel to fill this year and it will take dedicated work from all the members to talk about joining HYC in 2010. Robbie did it last month...let s see who can beat him this month. Last, but certainly not least, I need new volunteers for the Membership Committee that have time to spare for special projects. Please consider joining our committee as we would like to introduce some new programs and we need help from dedicated volunteers that have time to give.
